Romero Goes MMO

John Romero to Trump the WoW Factor on Computer and Video Games reveals that the designer is at work on an MMORPG for an unnamed start-up, though details are scant at this time:

"I started looking at what I was going to do next, so I looked around on the net and I saw there was an opportunity for an MMO, there was a person starting an MMO so I contacted him," Romero told us recently, explaining where his involvement with the project began. "We talked for hours on the phone, we had a lot of common interests and ideas about this title and so basically this guy was really excited, brought me on as a co-founder of the company and I've been here for almost four months now."

Strangely, Romero isn't willing to divulge the name of the company, nor is he slapping a name on the MMO title. "I can't really say too much... this is complete secret, stealth company", he said, adding cryptically that "This is not a typical games company and we're not making typical games".

According to Romero (who says he loves MMOs), the game he's working on is "very different from any other MMO for some special reasons." Precisely what those special reasons are, he wouldn't elaborate. He did, however, admit that funding for the project is lurking in the many millions of dollars bracket. "It's a lot of money, this is the most money I've ever spent on a game - in Gauntlet it was like $10 million, but this is much more," Romero revealed.

People bash John, but he's an artist, a creator of content -- a game designer. I think we should give him a break and sit back and watch what he can do next.

Hello John. Welcome to Blue's News. Stop wasting time on the internet and go design the game. That's the only way you'll prove yourself.

JR has gotten a lot of bad press, and rightly so. He made some mistakes, but we all do, the only difference here is that his mistakes are public.

Million dollar mistakes that is, he walked away from ID with a ton of money.

Gamers general don't like Romero. In my book he's in the same league with guys like Derek Smart and Uwe Boll. I was thinking okay who exactly is this announcement for? Then it hit me "MMORPG for an unnamed start-up". Start-up. This is John's open letter to investors. Investors who know about MMOGs but haven't played one, but are eager to jump on-board the bandwagon. I wish John's bandwagon well but I think it'll loose all wheels and go off a cliff...

Yeah, I already agreed to myself that I would never waste time or money playing an MMO game so why do these guys keep pumping them out? We have enough MMO games damnit!

There really isnt that many mmo's coming out anymore. This year DDO, MAYBE lord of the rings(doubt turbine is stupid enough to release 2 mmo's in the same year but who knows..),and MAYBE vanguard. is 1-2 mmo's a year really too much?

Spume: "So you play an east european gold digger trying to snag a millionaire. That hasn't been done MMO yet."

That was classic. No shit. Anyone that has a site blog with only professional pics of them is a narcisstic (sp?) wench/dick.

Ahhh... My Space. NUKE!

Maybe he was talking about Romero's new "rent-a-girlfriend" Rhaluka

Yeah, but Stevie was listed in that PCGamer issue years ago about "The Future Gods Of Gaming" or some bullshit. I assumed he was referring to that...

21. Romero - Born to Quit Jan 31, 2006, 13:24 Icewind

Romero is a born quitter. He left Midway 5 months into Gauntlet's development...probably realizing what a piece of crap that thing was. (What did it sell, 12 copies?)

He is like the video game industry equivalent of the movie industry's Uwe Boll. I swear, a hole in space/time will be ripped open when the day comes that Uwe Boll does a movie for a game made by Romero.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Wasn't he working on cell phone games for a while?

Fantastic games actually, PocketPC games too. He released Hyperspace Delivery Boy which was a great puzzle/adventure game. He even helped another PPC company finish up and release one of the first/well known RTS called Argentum, and did some voices/graphics for them. I know he's also helped out other developers with game design, and just contributed a lot in general.

I also got to try out a puzzle beta he was working on, everything was just so polished. It's a shame he didn't stick around, and release that too, but our market isn't that large.

Sure, he oversells his stuff a bit, but he's a great guy who's very reachable (always responds to his e-mails when I've tried.) I really can't say too much ill about him.

I WIN!!!!!

Congrats on your 10,000th post, nin! I know you're already past that a ways, but I just noticed now. Blue ought to get a different Rank for you after that many posts.

As for the topic of this thread, I agree that he sounds like a kid with his "secret, stealth company" and non-typical self. I say come back when you have something we are interested in.

This guy is such a joke, it reminds me of a child saying "I know a secret but I'm not going to tell you, nya nya!" Childish, yes that's the word.

Like Uwe Bowle and his movies: why do people keep throwing money at John Romero?
