Urban Chaos: Riot Response & Tomb Raider Plans

This SCi press release (thanks Frans and GameGossip) has an update on the company's financial condition, offering a couple of new revelations. The announcement mentions Urban Chaos: Riot Response, which may be a follow-up to Urban Chaos, the third-person action game by defunct developer Mucky Foot Productions. The PS2 is only platform mentioned so far, as the Official PS2 magazine is pumped enough about this to put out some sort of APB. The other revelation is the inevitable continuation of the Tomb Raider series, saying: "In addition we are developing a special edition of Tomb Raider to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Lara Croft, clearly established as one of the icons of video games."

Urban Chaos, while flawed in some ways and a bit repetitive, had huge areas of a city for levels, it was kind of a precursor to the gta's free-roaming style. Great graphics for the time and a fun story, combined with the huge areas, made it a very fun game. I'm not sure how much, but I'd guess that rockstar definitely borrowed some of their gta 3d concepts from this game, at least in part, it came out in 1999 for the pc, nearly 2 years before gta3. Holding out hope until more info is released about this game though, but still crossing my fingers all the same:)

I knew there would be a sequel to Urban Chaos! That took a while to announce though. I did love playing it on my PSX.

I dunno I always thought Urban Chaos blew balls. Startopia from the same developer was infinitly better.

Yeah but look at when Urban Chaos came out? I still have it and think it was an excellent game.

Wow...I haven't had Urban Chaos cross my mind for a very long time. I picked it up off a friend a few weeks after release, as he didn't like it all that much and had no desire to replay it. I always thought it was a lot of fun, as it's pretty unique as far as most PC games go (and I'm a PC gamer). Seeing a sequel should be interesting. With modern technology and design aesthetics, it should be interesting to see where they go with it.

Urban Chaos got some excellent reviews. I remember because I saw a cheap copy, looked it up, read said reviews, went back and bought it, and... was mightily disappointed.

Excellent intro video, though.

Urban Chaos, now theres a blast from the past. Wasn't that the one with the black chick officer with the combat using both melee and ranged attacks?

The Urban Chaos game is the new name for the game priorly known as Zero Tolerance / Roll Call. There was some conflict about the name Zero Tolerance, which is maybe why they decided to dig up Urban Chaos again. It has nothing to do with the Mucky Foot game really.

Hardly. More like an icon for franchise milking and brand implosion. I would love to see another awesome TR game like the 1st (and to a lesser extent, the 4th), but after so many disasters, there seems little chance of that.

It's a shame that most people (Usually non-PC Gamers) forget that Tomb Raider was a PC title first, and a console title second. I think that there is why you never saw a game as good as the first one. TR1 was made with the more mature, adventure-gamer in mind. It was heavy on exploration, light on combat, and focused on secret areas and random discoveries. That is what made it such a hit with our crowd.

Then of course, they decided to mess it up by turning it into a third person shooter with jumping elements (basically), and it was nothing like what it was originally intended to be.

In my opinion, Lara Croft is the Pam Anderson of the virtual world. In other words, she has big tits, but oddly enough, I don't really want to see them anymore.

Tomb Raider 1 was released for PC and PS1 at the same time, so that's bullshit. It's a shame that some people (Usually PC Gamers) have such a feeling of superiority.

They were released simultanously, but it was designed for the PC first and foremost & then ported to the PSX due to the immense hype the console was producing at the time...

Given the immature audience of the PSX crowd the game sold massively ("wow tits!!!1!") and then all further TR games became 'PSX/One games', designed solely for Sonys ageing machine and then ported to keep the smaller PC & Dreamcast fanbases happy.
The whole reason the series never advanced was because it was choked by the PSXs limited hardware and the suits desire to keep it on that format.

TR was awesome on the PSX as well as the PC. I played both. Excellent game design can often rise above platform.
