id's New IP?

Kikizo Games' John Carmack Q&A offers their Q&A about DOOM RPG for mobiles and other topics. In response to their question about what's next, the id Software Technical Director's brief reply seems to indicate that for the first time since Quake in 1996, their next project will not be based on one of their previous games:
We are working internally on a completely new project, but we haven't made any firm plans yet for the future of the Wolf, Doom and Quake franchises.

I don't think Super Power 2 did all that well.

When did liberalism and socialism become derogatory terms? Also, why do you have to live in the EU to criticise the US? Oh, sorry, because if you live in the US you can't criticise the government because it is unpatriotic.

lol. Liberals leads to the degredation of American morality,
Republicans lead our country into useless wars that no one understands the reasoning behind. That's Americanism!

Can you play as the Fremen? What's the minimum character level required for Worm-Riding?
The dune universe is so rich you could make dozens of games for it with the ability to play as different characters. It would pwn. They have a combination of energy projectile weapons, mass projectile weapons, nuclear weapons, and melee weapons. It would rock hard.

I enjoyed Doom 3, but did it really require hiring a professional writer? Does any FPS need one? I don't think it added anything to the game...

Going back to just before Quake 2 was released, or maybe just after..... Either John Cash or Michael Abrash covered in one of their .plans what Carmack was working on, which was Trinity.

I can't be stuffed trying to find it, but the main feature they talked about was the same as Gabe Newell spoke of wanting to do with the HL2 engine. Make the next map and all the action going on there, actually visible to the player from his current position/map and slowly increase the resolution and render it in, the closer you got, until you were playing in that map without having suffered a level load.

If memory serves me. They described a series of pillars used to blot out parts of the distant scenery for some technical reasons I don't understand, so they could achieve the desired result.

They were talking Pentium 90's at this time;P

For whatever reason they discussed at the time, it was disbanded and Carmack had found his much loved bezier curves that became the mainstay of Quake 3.

Graymatters game idea for Trinity came much later. I'm sure they themselves even mentioned it was to capitolize on name id used for what became the Quake 3. Graymatters Trinity was set to use the Quake 3 engine around late 2002 to early 2003. Roughly eight years after the .plans I'm talking about mentioned the end of the Trinity idea for id.

As for DooM3.... Didn't much care for it the first time. Looked awesome, but the monster closets shit me to death. Played through it again after the expansion came out. Really enjoyed it. It's production values left the expansion looking pretty shit in comparison, though.

Just finished Quake 4 and it was a fun romp. I'm sure some of the artwork there was from DooM 3. Especially all those walls and ground lights in that area where you had to repair the train line.

I heard they're working on a aerospace sim, where you can build your own rockets and try to break through the atmosphere.

That would be awesome!!

But if someone's going to make an FPS it doesn't have to have a mature rating! Doing that just limits your audience and also desensitises kids to violence. Why not have it where you're fighting against dangerous animals in the wilderness, or you're a dick tracy character shooting evil cartoon characters like roger rabit or something like that? So many ideas that haven't been explored yet guys! I want to see more stuff like that being made.

prefect IP for id: Bladerunner universe

- enviroments are dark, plenty of use for a flashlight
- most characters have shaved heads
- simple plot device: find/kill replicants

it's a no-brainer for id ...probably could be made much better by some other company but at least id would get the visuals right

Have a project that they released a few screen shots for awhile back before Doom 3, something to do with Time Manipulation and a type of X-Ray vision, but was cancelled? Trying to remember the name, think it was Portal or something like that.
Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Here is my idea for a game.

Take the Dead or Alive Game. Remove all the characters and add in heros and villians from other games. From Master Chief to Kate Archer. License the hell out of these character and maybe throw in some super smash brothers fun.
I mean I'd pay 40 bucks to watch the little girl from FEAR beat the crap outta Cortona or Kate Archer

How about something based on the Ender series space school?

A cell-shaded Hello Kitty FPS. Except with taking pictures and blowing kisses instead of shooting guns.

There, that'd be a nice original departure for them, no?

Greco-Roman time did not have guns.
Just melee and a few basic boring projectile weapons. Now in real life it takes more skill and work to become good with those weapons then with a gun….but boring on a computer.

Unless you have a gun and go around slaughtering all the melee carrying people!

Hexen II also did the Greco-Roman (to add on to the other guy mentioning Daikatana). But I believe that's just two games. So yeah, more FPS games with Greco-Roman would be hella sweet!

Flight Simulator 2006 will be coming out as Flight Simulator X (as in 10)...wish I could find the link, just look through the last few days at SimHQ.com, there's a link there with some pics...looks real sweet, but then again, I'm more than happy with FS2004...

How about a game where you play as a tree-hugging hippy back in the 60's/70's and the idea of the game is to create such a fuss about trivial things, get ripped off your tits on mushrooms and weed, and then when that fails to accomplish anything, you start and run the perfect hippy commune where it's all for one and one for all crap.

Oh and then afterwards the rest of the world destroys the commune in a blaze of nuclear fire.

That would give me hours of entertainment.
