Out of the Blue

Until some commercials for a college bowl game today came on yesterday I was under the impression today would see a return to a more normal news flow after the holiday slowdown. As it turns out, apparently a lot of people have today off, so things may not start picking up again until tomorrow.

I think this mission was one of mankind's greater achievements. It's mindblowing what these rovers are doing.

I agree. I think it's easy to criticize NASA (and I know I have in the past), but the reality is the stuff they design has to try and work around a lot of unknown factors. Those rovers have gotten stuck, had wind blow sand on their solar panels (and in turn, had wind clear the panels somewhat), wheels and arms stop working, incredibly harsh temps., etc, and yet they're still going. That's pretty damn amazing...

That ActionTrip picture thing is a wee bit depressing, isn't it? Is that really funny? What about the fact that you gain another year's worth of knowledge? What about the fact that everyone dies eventually? What about the fact that ActionTrip is a cliched heap of poo?

Even I, who get a whopping 8 (yes, count them, 8) holidays a year, get today off.

On the plus side, I get comp time for overtime worked (which my previous 2 jobs did not offer), so even with reduced vacation time as well (compared to previous employers), I still am coming out way ahead most of the time.

Edit - saw King Kong last night. Started 20 minutes late. Took 45 minutes to get from the opening credits to Skull Island. Not that this was "wasted" time, but with a movie this long, they may have wanted to trim some of it back. I didn't mind, though. Overall, I really enjoyed it. There were a couple things I noticed, though.

SSKK(TGAWRAINY)T:
Some of the CGI work wasn't the greatest. Especially when the ship is caught on the rocks, the small rowboats are in the water, King Kong's lips/gums/inside of his mouth (not the teeth), the native "pole vaulting" especailly caught my attention.

They overdid the fight scenes on Skull Island. The length was fine, but they were WAY too over-the-top (fighting dinosaurs hanging in vines, tossing her around like a toy, running through dinosaur legs in the canyon and the pileup at the end). If you want me to suspend my belief in reality for a movie, make it reasonable for me to do so. Ditto with Kong shaking her when he first grabs her and runs off into the forest - uh, broken neck or at least whiplash, anyone? Ditto with the sailor shooting the bugs off the other sailors and the guy swinging on a vine like Indiana Jones and shooting from the hip. Just tone it down, make it a LITTLE more realistic, and it would have been so much better....

Apparently being the key word. I was a little unsure whether or not I had work today but couldn't really see why not so the wife drove me there only to find 4 cars in a parkinglot of at least 20 on a regular sunday even. And we suspected as much already on our way since there was so little traffic... Well, so home we went again Good thing I didn't take my regular 35 min walk to work. Would've sucked doing that only to find an empty lab.
