Out of the Blue

Well today is the Winter (not to be confused with the Pontiac) Solstice, the shortest day of the year (actually they all are the same 24 hours, but anyway...), and the beginning of winter. It's already been more than cold enough around these parts that this is just an official designation, but on the sunny side, for folks in the southern hemisphere, today marks the start of summer. So for those of you down under... surf's up!

No, but the more common name for that is JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks). If your RAID implementation supports JBOD, then it probably won't do striping across the disks either -- which means absolutely no performance improvement.

It's really only useful if you want the disks to look like a single partition to the OS. Note that you can mount disks as a directory in Win2k or XP (or even NT4 I think; and doing this in XP is really easy), so the usefulness of this is even further reduced.

Ok cool... and can I have 2 SATA disks in RAID0 (assume they're the same as in all likelihood they will be) and a third, older, slower IDE disk attached for backup and so forth?

I'm starting to get the hang of this stuff, honest

Yes you can.

Again, I wish you luck beating XP into installing on that setup... although if you have a very new MB it might not be so nightmareish (the newer MB's have finally made SATA drives look just like older PATA drives, so XP doesn't need drivers loaded from floppy to see the disks).

Don't worry, by the time you've figured it out it will have all changed

It'll be something new, one of the Nforce4 boards I suspect. Current popular opinion seems to recommend the DFI boards, but I'll see.

So I finally made it to the Ring of Fire mission. Rask and I have tried it 5-6 times. The last two times we have gotten stuck at the first group of fire imps. And, frankly, we didn't even come close to getting past them. Anyone have any hints on this part? I am thinking some knowdown spells to stop their meteor showers.

In addition, can anyone recommend a good place to farm for gold and experience?

Ok, I'm up to that mission, and so is Pixel and TV. So we all need to team up sometime...

Farming? Straight North outta Port Sledge. Grawl Country. Take a healer and a warrior and whatever class you play. And that's it. You'll get XP out the wazoo...

Been quite a while since I played any GW, but if memory serves, the fire imps should be your primary target whenever they show up, as they are very bad news.

Maelstrom works wonders against them (at least it did back in the days when then AI liked to stand around in AOE -- not sure how things play out now), but really, any other cold-damage type attacks are invaluable in RoF, as just about everything in there is vulnerable to cold.

With that in mind, your Ranger should ALWAYS be casting Winter around the place so that any other elemental damage your party is dishing is converted to cold. I won't say it's mandatory, but it is mandatory, and will really make all the difference in that mission. Once you know you have Winter in the toolbox, just think of crafty ways to lay down elemental DMG and you're laughing.

Next, decide who is calling targets and be very disciplined in following those calls so that you're always focusing your attacks and bringing down mobs as quickly as possible. The bots are just fodder in that mission and will get taken out plenty. Don't let that worry you, just try not to rack up too much DP yourselves..

Also, when you get to the section with the pools of lava, Charge! is a great skill to have -- if neither of you can bring it, wait at the edge of the pools until one of the bots throws it up and then don't waste any time in charging!! There's always a patch of dry ground you can make it to before Charge dies, so be sure you run as far onto it as possible so that you get the bots out of those pools as much as you can (maybe they've fixed that part of the AI by now, but that was always the most frustrating aspect of RoF for me by far). If there is a group of mobs between you and dry ground, get to ground before you begin your attack.

When you get to the final massive battle (you'll know it when you see it), spend a second or two outside of aggro getting past the feelings of OMFGWTF???! Take a deep breath and develop a battle plan.

Then play that section slow, picking off mobs one by one whenever possible from the periphery. Pull like hell so that you're not drawing anything into the fight that you don't need to and you'll be fine. Voice comms work wonders in RoF, since things can get really out of hand really fast if everyone isn't on the same page.

EXTREMELY satisfying mission when everything goes according to plan, but it can be a tough nut to crack when you don't know what to expect, that's for sure..

Why do people in the US and Canada think winter starts now? Because media says so? If anything, today should be called mid-winter since we're now at the darkest day of the year. When the season actually begins of course differs with where you live. But I though most people call winter the three months of December, January and February.

I never had any problem with those missions, but they may have become tougher since last I played them.

In general, focus fire on the imps. A mesmer teammate is great to have against them, or as MeatFarts said anything that deals cold damage. (I've got an Icy Bow string if anyone wants it). I'd load up my healer and help out but I'm tied up the next two nights.

Farming: Depends. If you're looking for warrior or monk solo areas, I have quite a few. As an invinci-monk I farm Elona Reach (the mission for minotaur), outside of Elona Reach for Sand Drakes, Both portals outside of Augury Rock for either Hydra or Desert Griffons or Minotaur, and the cave just a little way NW of Droknar's Forge for Mountain Troll. I find the best runs are the Mountain Trolls and the Desert Griffons.

You could also try to fit yourself to a 5-man Orozar farm group out of Deldrimor War Camp, though I haven't tried it yet so I can't say what it's like.

Edit: MeatFarts, they did update the enemy AI. They now run from any AoE spell. Annoying, but it is effective when you need to break their fire so the healer can catch up.

Too late.

  • Like drinking a proper cup of tea, keep the pinky extended to the sky.
    • When in the missionary position play paddy-cake with your hands.
      • After having an orgasm proceed to do a celebratory dance as if you just scored the winning touchdown in the last 2 seconds of the super bowl…do not forget the break dancing!
        • Immediately before pleasing a woman orally make sure to chew some extra extra hot cinnamon gum for about 30 seconds.
          • When in the ‘doggy style’ position make a comment about how her booty looks a little larger than usual.
            • Right before getting’ it on’ with a woman ‘work it’ some so you are already right at the point of ejaculation…that way you do not last very long. Women have more important things to do like put stuff in little boxes.
              • Women find nothing sexier than a man in his undies rubbing meat gravy all over him self. Next time you are having dinner and your food has gravy, immediately proceed to strip and rub your self with gravy while pouting your lips and blowing kisses her way.
                • Never change your pattern/rhythm be it orally or intercoursely (look, I invented a new word)..women love the same exact thing over and over and over…they absolutely love predictability!
