Well today is the Winter (not to be confused with the Pontiac) Solstice, the shortest day of the year (actually they all are the same 24 hours, but anyway...), and the beginning of winter. It's already been more than cold enough around these parts that this is just an official designation, but on the sunny side, for folks in the southern hemisphere, today marks the start of summer. So for those of you down under... surf's up!

Because now is (very roughly) when it starts to get cold, on a regular and consistent basis.

Which means you're defining winter by temperature only. Seems a little narrow-minded to me. We're only talking three weeks here to include the whole of December, so winter is already skewed to most of it after the solstice anyway. Why make it complicated and make a cut inside of a month?
