Because now is (very roughly) when it starts to get cold, on a regular and consistent basis.Which means you're defining winter by temperature only. Seems a little narrow-minded to me. We're only talking three weeks here to include the whole of December, so winter is already skewed to most of it after the solstice anyway. Why make it complicated and make a cut inside of a month?
