StarForce Challenge

Destroy your PC and receive $1000 from StarForce (thanks Andrew) is an offer from the copy-protection maker in an effort to combat what they feel may be unfounded rumors about their software:
There have been a lot of rumors in the Internet concerning DVD/CD writers malfunction after installation and star-up of StarForce protected applications. Some have even mentioned that should such “malfunctioning” drive be placed in any other PC without StarForce protection installed it will fail to work as well.
...
After the installation and start-up of StarForce protected product the problem with (CD/DVD read-write malfunction) must exist and be reproduced in any other configuration.
If you can be the first to reproduce this situation in our office, we will be happy to award you with $1000.00 US, cover your trip to Moscow and pay 2 days’ lodging.

And what if you get there and can't reproduce it or the Starforce developers decide that your definition of "malfunction" and theirs are not the same? This is nothing but a desperate attempt by Starforce to cover up problems with its software and dupe skeptical publishers into using it. By setting up this contest with such a paltry prize, high travel expenses and barriers, and a short deadline for entry, the company can simply declare that no problems exist when no one steps forward to take this challenge or if someone takes it and fails to meet its definition of "malfunction."

The fact that Midway recently removed the Starforce protection from Area 51 in an update after problems with it demonstrates that using Starforce won't help a mediocre game sell any better and that it costs publishers more in increased technical support than it generates in additional sales.
