Out of the Blue

My favorite aspect of the winter so far (or at least the wintery part of autumn) is the snowman in the yard of our neighbors. Though snowmen are common in fictional depictions of the season, they are often disappointing in real life... small, lopsided affairs that often are covered with dirt shoveled up with their source snow. In contrast, our neighbors' snowman is top-notch, full-sized, clean, and even set up with proper accoutrements like a scarf and a hat, though as far as can be told, the hat has no magical properties ("Happy Birthday!").

How about trying some sort of data recovery program

Not possible. The data was on an ext3 partition. When you delete a file in ext3 it doesn't erase some of the file reference info, it erases all of it. There are no undelete programs for ext3, nor is it possible to create one.

I'll have to look into delete permissions and setting up sambad better when I get things fixed. The way I have it is obviously non-optimal, but it was the only way I could beat it into actually working at all. The samba docs suck (almost as bad as Oracle docs).

I may try some hair-brained scheme to extract metadata out of iTunes so I can easily re-tag the files. Re-ripping the CDs isn't a huge deal... re-fixing all the godforsaken tags is.

Don't you have Norton Disk Doctor?
The older the better.
Would recover everything in about 20 minutes.

Or anything from ontrack data recovery.
Even if you have been using your pc, probably get back about 90% of it.

Good luck.

Hrmm .. this article in ETC today "Violent video games alter brain's response to violence" might explain why so many folks here feel so strongly that Tookie and 'the man without a bomb' deserved to die.

Being a trained and active professional in the field of governmental misconduct, so many examples come to mind where government agents thought they were doing the right thing but were actually persuing a totalitarian, racist, or otherwise improper agenda. Im not saying they are wrong in these cases. Im saying that generally those with the strongest opinions on the matter are the most ignorant.

When ignorant idiots actualy take the time out to post their opinions that these folks really deserved to die, I begin to think maybe Lieberman's right.

And that wasn't the most (or only) controversial award -- Theodore Roosevelt (1906, for drawing up the Russo-Japanese peace treaty)
Just a sidenote: I was actually gonna include Theodore Rex but my personal preferences got the better of me. He may have been an imperalist asshole but his conservation work was the first real stab at the government doing anything to protect the environment.
Looking over the list, a lot of them seem to be almost pop culture awards, and it's unclear that decades later the person was really worthy.

Mortified doesn't even begin to cover it. Horrifically embarassed and pissed at myself for not hiring a lawyer before hitting "OK." I'm afraid that I may have to turn in my geek badge.

To be honest, I've spent the last week wrapping my brain around sentences like "Aldosterone-mediated primary active transport of Na and the medullary gradient create the conditions for passive transport of some bicarb and chlorine and cotransport of H, K, Cl, and HCO3."

Sorry, the combination of pregnancy, finals week, and having a sick toddler forced me to make a bad "Ok" decision...

I fucking hate iTunes. With a new, unrivaled passion. And, really, it boils down to my perpetual complaint against Apple -- if you don't do things the way they want you to, you're pretty well fucked.

Well, that's us now.... fucked. A quarter to a third of our music library has been deleted by the piece of shit known as iTunes, because when Heather was trying to put some new music on her iPod she hit "OK" to the wrong dialog box (out of the three or four it spits at you during this operation) and it went off and wiped music out of the library.

The shared, network library.

The library which I spent weeks ripping from source CDs and fixing all the tags on (including writing my own damn code to do things, and modifying the id3lib standard library to comply with Apple's fucked up mis-implementation of ID3v2.3).

So now I'm going to have to salvage what I can off my own iPod, re-rip what I don't have, and re-fix all the goddamn tags.

And yes, the Compilation directory was one of the ones that went bye-bye. Yeah, that's going to be a real joy.

Needless to say, iTunes will never be installed at this house again. I knew we should've converted to Anapod Explorer exclusively awhile back, but didn't.

And no, I didn't have a backup of the 50+ GB of music. My backup drive is physically disconnected in the server and I haven't had the time to fix that. Yeah, egg on face. But iTunes should never go off and fucking delete music from the disk. That's just fucking stupid design. Not to mention that it doesn't handle network shares worth a crap in the first place -- my iTunes libary is full of duplicates and triplicates because it somehow decided to import files once with /'s and once with \'s, and then imported some stuff a third time because it was on an imported playlist.

Love the hardware, hate the goddamn software.

And Heather is completely mortified about the entire thing; but I don't blame her one bit.

Rant off.

I think that the well-intentioned nominations of several bad apples (eg. Arafat)

Arafat was actually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (along with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin -- all in the same year, all for the same reason; but people seem to forget that it was an award to them as well. I know I forgot/didn't know.)

And that wasn't the most (or only) controversial award -- Theodore Roosevelt (1906, for drawing up the Russo-Japanese peace treaty) and Henry Kissenger/Le Duc Tho (1973, for the Vietnam peace treaty; Le Duc Tho declined) are right up there on the list.

Of course, there are some names/organizations that are certainly deserving -- Jean Henri Dunant (founder of the Red Cross and the Geneva Conventions), the International Red Cross itself (during WW1), George Catlett Marshall (for the Marshall Plan), Martin Luther King Jr., Lech Walesa, Andrea Sakharov, Mother Teresa, and Mikhail Gorbachev -- those are probably the most memorable names on the list. There's others I'd agree with, as well as a number I'd disagree with or at least say "who the hell is that?"

I have to agree with the critics who say it's a bit too much of a popularity award -- the other Nobel prizes are only awarded 20, 30, or more years after the fact... when the scientific/cultural value is more clear. Looking over the list, a lot of them seem to be almost pop culture awards, and it's unclear that decades later the person was really worthy.

As for nominations -- anyone in the Norwegian Parliment can nominate someone. That's all it takes.

Anyone can be nominated for the Peace Prize. It only takes the behest of a semi-prominent figure, usually an academic, ex-recipient or assembly member, to earn a nomination. You think Williams was bad? Apparently Hitler was nominated for the Prize in early 1939 but his name was taken out of the pool a short while later for obvious reasons.

My vote would be that friggen idiot Jesse Jackson nominated him. The other day he was comparing Tookie to Nelson Mandela!!!!!!

Many good people have won the award. I think that the well-intentioned nominations of several bad apples (eg. Arafat) should not spoil the overall meaning of the award.

When are we ever going to get rid of that ridiculous bullshit Nobel Peace Prize?

WILLIAMS was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize? The guy founded the fucking Cribs, probably the bloodiest gang in the history of human civilization, and was found guilty of murdering four people in cold blood. That's a fucking GREAT example for the Peace Prize right there!

Actually, they should have awarded it to him, then they could have made a picture of him and Yasser Arafat both holding up their Peace Prizes.

Does anyone NOT feel the urge to just spit on the idiots who award this thing?

Mmmmm... Saffron... Sweden has a lot of good stuff, like cheap cigarettes, booze, pork, cheese, tunnbröd, IKEA... Of course, all of this can be aquired with a quick trip to Åre. Except IKEA. But then, IKEA has opened a store near here. On second thoughts, scratch that. The furniture is nice, but the stores are hell.

Purell (or equivalent) is your friend! That and wipes. Soooo many wipes. We've found we like the ones from Costco -- they're not really much cheaper than the name brands (something silly like $.01/wipe cheaper), but they come in their own self-dispensing container for each package, so they're useful on the go as well as at the usual changing station.

Even if he didn't murder those 4 people, you can't tell me this man never killed anyone else. His whole life up untill he got caught was about criminal activity. He started a gang that has murdered hundreds if not thousands. Even if he didn't kill those 4 people specifically you can't tell me this bastard wasn't guilty enough of a multitude of other crimes that he didn't deserve to die for them.

Well, I am not sure I feel the same way along the lines of he may have done other things or he is responsible because he was "co-founder" - but I find those who currently think he should have been let go (or not killed) as sick individuals.

Time has obviously forgotten the victims and their families - and I am glad the powers that be chose to stick with the jury's decision.

You wouldn't see those "protestors" protesting if THEIR family members had been killed by the sick bastard - or another crip gang member. The only redemption he gets is the one his maker may (or may not) give him.
