New ATI CATALYST Drivers

ATI Customer Care now offers downloads of new version 5.12 CATALYST reference drivers for RADEON accelerators running under Windows XP. Several game-related fixes and performance improvements are listed among the release notes, and word is: "The Catalyst® 5.12 software suite introduces dual core support for CPU bound cases. This feature provides improved graphics performance for DX 9 supported graphics adapters installed in systems running the Windows XP and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating systems." As noted here (thanks Ant), the Tray Tools edition of the drivers are no longer available, and the CCC edition is now required.

Well I no longer feel bad for eyeing the 7800gt,,,,,,

edit:
Just read earlier in the thread that NVIDIA's bringing out it's own bloat ware.

But I am curious to try out the multi threading since I got this old HT cpu.

I don't know how reliable these links are, but somebody posted these on the alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati newsgroup, so if you're feeling brave feel free to try them out (they seem legit, but I'm waiting a bit before I try installing them myself):

Yes, but 2 gigs of RAM can have good performance effects on memory hogs like Civ 4.

Speaking of which, I got crashes in Civ 4 every couple of turns after installing these drivers. Ran the ATI uninstall tool, reinstalled 5.11, and everything has been going smooth for 20 or 30 turns.

It's already been shown that high end RAM has negligible performance effects.

Oh, and it's supposed to be "I couldn't care less." Saying "I could care less" implies you do care.

Yeah, that's why I said high-end instead of listing something like "Ultra BFG-1000 F700 BLOPO DRAM RAM" or whatever.

Good point on word meaning but I couldn't care less.

wow they ditched the control panel? Soooo lame! Guess I wont be jumping right onto 5.12 then. I with you guys.. screw CCC. For one, that shit has NEVER managed to keep its menu boarders and windows lined up correctly. Amature code. Second, it takes twice as long to load cause of all the graphic data, AND it takes time to initialise the stupid effects.

well I give it 2 driver revisions before we chew their ass out enough to bring back cp.. or someone else will release a cp for us.

At least the CCC version remembers my Theater mode settings between restarts, which is more than I could say for the CP version...

You get an ATI icon in the toolbar.

Exactly, easier than the control panel and ccc. My only gripe with the drivers (post 5.6) is that my lcd displays a black screen sometimes.

Same here, until today I had no need to install it. Now only because of ATi decision I have to install it. I don't like it and anyway my driver is functionnal for now so I'll keep this one until I met a glitch or I really need to upgrade.

Are these the drivers that make ATI fun?

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

I've been using the CCC version for the last few months. The main advantage is the Catalyst AI, which can improve performance in some games, is only available with it.

For those of you who (like me) hate the LOOOOOOOONG startup time of the interface, don't use it! You get an ATI icon in the toolbar. Just right-click and get an exploding menu that lets you set almost everything you need from FSAA to Cat AI. The ones I mess with most frequently are there and I almost never use the full CCC.

I don't mind the CCC... however, I do mind the 15 second wait for it to load and the fuck ugly interface.

I hate the control center, the control panel is much easier and faster to use. Curious if these 5.12 drivers will really give any improvement on my system, i'm guessing not.

I thought this updates main feature is that it can run 2 ati cards together like the sli stuff does for nvidia.

I want a Nintendo Revolution controller TV remote.

Fuck CCC shit. There is absolutely no legitimate reason why the regular control panel is gone. No reason except for marketing. The fancy CCC has all those bells and whistles that look pretty but hog system resources. I don't want them, I don't need them. And ATI can go fuck themselves. Is there somewhere I can post to make my feelings known?

These drivers are a joke, no more ATI Control Panel? WTF ya ok ATI, we really want to be forced to use Catalyst Center... Plus these drivers dont do anything except improve performance of dual cpu systems.

I'm glad I got a NVIDIA 6800. However, I did read that NVIDIA is coming out with its own bloated control panel too.
