UT2004 Patch

As noted on the Unreal Tournament Website, a new patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 is now available, updating Epic's first-person shooter to version 3369. The official version 3369 patch, which is identical to the beta version 3369 patch, can also be found on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Filecloud, FileFront, Filenuts, FileShack, Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, VGPro, and Worthplaying. Word from Epic is:
This patch is completely compatible with the retail version and previous patches - servers and clients of any flavor can connect with each other.

This patch will not overwrite your ut2004.ini and user.ini files, except to update settings as necessary.

The patch change list is included in the patch. After installing the patch, you can find it at ut2004\help\readmepatch.int.txt

It's absolutely true the overabundant gametypes, mutators, and the like totally splintered the online community. I hate instagib, but it seems that's the only way you're gonna play vs. humans. If you weren't around when the UT2k4 demo was released then you pretty much missed it's multiplayer lifespan.

That being said, the bots are amazing. The mods that take full advantage of them (Clone Bandits, Chaos) are at the very top my of most played list.

It is hard to find a good online CTF match these days
I haven't played the game online in at least six months, but back when I did play regularly some of the best CTF matches I found were on demo servers. You might try those. Yes, the Facing Worlds map is about all that is played on the demo, but it's still a good map.

And RO:Ostfront will be even more perfect. That game is atop of my most-wanted list right now.

Funny how when I think UT2k4 I think ONSLAUGHT only. I forgot about the other modes of play, I think I tried all of them the first day I bought the game, but UT2k4 is all about ONS as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, bot onslaught and some CTF or DM for variety at times, but mostly onslaught.

and then all the mods took it even further.

This is why I despise mods. Yeah its great that the gamers can be the developers and all, but this is what killed Q3A IMO. Too many mods and no one was playing good, old-fasioned Q3A like it was meant to be.

I've never seen a new game come out that splinted the users so much. You had CTF then you had Instagib CTF. Then you had low-grav instagib CTF. Etc etc. It was nearly impossible to find a GOOD, REGULAR CTF server.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: what doomed UT2004's multiplayer community was that there were so many modes to play in. It splintered the community in a bad way, and then all the mods took it even further.

This is so true.

I've never seen a new game come out that splinted the users so much. You had CTF then you had Instagib CTF. Then you had low-grav instagib CTF. Etc etc. It was nearly impossible to find a GOOD, REGULAR CTF server.

And this truly is one of the best multiplayer games. Completely blows BF:1942 and Counterstrike out of the water in terms of skill required, ease of use, graphics, etc. And to think I bought this game for $25 when it was first released...amazing.

Let's hope Epic understands that putting all those mutators and game modes into the game (while adding value) only splinters the gamers, weakening the competition, and hurting the lifespan of the game.

Plus, with UT2004 you have to take into account that most people who own it and play it regularly play offline with the fantastic Bots.

General Gameplay:
- Fixed DriverLeft() not be called when driver dies in vehicle without vehicle being destroyed. This fixes the vehicle not resetting, and fixes effects like the engine sound not being turned off.

Bummer. That made it easier to hijack enemy vehicles because they stuck around longer. It only happened relatively near nodes though.

- Fixed manta and raptor spinning sometimes when player enters

Thank God! That was an annoying bug. I've died many times because a flying vehicle would slam into something or get stuck in a tree when I jumped in and tried to fly straight away from a sticky situation.

Enough said.

Now start up another server browser that allows you to filter bots out. Come back and post what you find....

NOTE: This is not a comment on the quality of the game itself. Its arguably one of the best MP games of the past 3 years but its just that there aren't many people playing it anymore.

LOL, good one.

yes.. too many game types made it hard to find a solid community in your favorite game type.

That's an impressive figure!

Plus, with UT2004 you have to take into account that most people who own it and play it regularly play offline with the fantastic Bots. No need to find servers and deal with lag when the bots behave just like humans - humans that actually know what they're doing...and who don't bitch you out for lagging their server with you're 56k modem :). I play Instagib matches against Godlike Bots daily, and it doesn't get old.

It was always such a pain in the ass trying to find a pure deathmatch game without bots. I still load it up frequently to play some DM against the bots, though.

Never liked Onslaught, either. The most teamwork I want is TDM or LMS. Except for Red Orchestra. That game rules.
