Out of the Blue

The curtain is about to fall on the final act in the saga of our Thanksgiving leftovers. We'll make a quick trip to my dad's to share the last of the turkey salad and bestow a gift of the last of the gravy, which would just go to waste if we kept it.

So I fired up CoD2 at about midnight.
I must say, after playing through 1.5 missions, (I am on Stalingrad and seeking out tanks to destroy) I am very impressed with the SP. Smoke is awesome. The AI is decent (I have it on the 3rd out of 4th level).

Weapons are very cool and have great sound effects. Iron sights are awesome. The movement of the muzzle while in/not in "look down barrel" mode seems appropriate, and the smoke from AI's cigs, breath, and guns are pretty neat.

I am worried about all the talk on the MP about cheating and such, but will try it out at some point.

Thus far, 4.5/5

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Good way to dispose of a body if you ever need to.

I recall (vaguely) reading the Narnia books as a kid, but I don't recall the Xtian slant to them. Perhaps I was just too young to get the references. Anyone know of any specific examples of what they're talking about, or is it just the overall "good vs. evil" vibe? Is it some form of subtle indoctrination going on here? Why are the Xtians all for this, yet thing Harry Potter is evil incarnate?

I seem to remember that C. S. Lewis was a believer in God Almighty. Other than that the issue here eludes me.

Very few Christians are "up in arms", just a vocal minority. Most I know have seen several (if not all) of the films and enjoyed them for what they are, entertainment.

Never read the CS Lewis stories, but always meant to. Maybe this will inspire me to do so.

Edit - should probably qualify the statement to say most Christians I know that I have discussed the movies with at some point. I know many that the topic hasn't come up, but I doubt any would have a problem with it. I know one person who won't see it, but she just doesn't like those kinds of movies (sci-fi or fantasy) anyways.

Still, it's interesting why these people think the Narnia story is ok, while HP is not. I mean, it obviously can't be the presence of magic in itself.

Ummmm... frabjous day? Callooh? Callay?

I chortle, but not with joy:

Stubbs for the PC finally arrived from Amazon. The good news is that I can say for a fact that the game does actually exist because I have the box right here in my hands.

It says PC CD-ROM on it, and has pictures on the back of people enjoying the afternoon by having their brains eaten.

They finally freakin' sold me a copy!! Such progress. Next we'll have whole cities on Mars, I think to myself.

Inside the box, is a jewel case. I open it and can see the PC CD-ROM disks advertised on the box.

There are three of them:

• Disk 2
• Disk 2
• Disk 3

Having never read the stories, I have no idea about the context of the magic use in Narnia, so I really couldn't even hazard a guess....

It's been a long time (15-20 years), but basically Aslan (the Lion) is a Christ figure and all the books are to some extent religious tales. The final book "The Last Battle" has similarities to Revalations.

I enjoyed them even though at that age I was starting to doubt all of that stuff - they're still good stories. I didn't feel like I was being indoctrinated.

As for magic, I'm not sure there was the same kind of spells, potions and wands stuff as described in Harry Potter, although there's certainly mystical/magical stuff (Narnia is in a perpetual winter at the start of Lion/Witch/Wardrobe).

Not that I think logic or common sense has much to do with the people branding Harry Potter satanic.

Maybe Christians are up in arms because Harry Potter is tripe. What's-her-name is just lazy, so she has Harry wave his 'wand' around to make impossible things happen, because hey, IT'S MAGIC!

Magical flying car? Why not? Boys flying around on brooms? Oh boy, that's original! Three witches cackling over a cauldron, telling a tale of a man who is done in by corruption all around him.. And look, Harry's magic bunny went down a hole and some girl followed it! I'm in such a dreadful hurry!
