Quake - First really powerful 3D gaming experience. I loved the setting/world of
Quake because it did fall into the more mythical/fantastical (D&D) setting, but was still really unique. Probably due to the engine limitations and the freshness of the developer to true 3D, 3D space was stressed heavily with regards to level layout, level interaction, teleporters, etc. The mobs were just strange, which I loved, and the varied, chaotic worlds have yet to come even close to being repeated.
Only Duke Nukem 3D beat Quake in craziness. And D3D is classic.Quake 2 - Now, I
really dislike the generic space marine setting (I always saved that for
Doom) and the streamlining of levels (losing nearly all of the quirky utilization of 3D space,) but the functional gameplay evoled
significantly (in many ways, it made the formula a lot of games use today) and the multi-player was incredibly fun for many people.
Note that this is why some, albeit a small minority, long for a sequel to the original
Quake. On a pure game functionality bases, Q2 is better, but I so long for the world of Q1. I want to go back to demon knights, shambler creature-things shooting electricity, crazily-hopping creature things, where there is no use key and everything happens via proximity or via your physically interacting with the environment, defeating bosses by skill or mechanism than purely shooting at them, a large, flying dragon as a boss (expansion,) etc. It was ver non-sensical in many ways, yet so beloved because of that. In many ways,
Quake was more "open" 3D than many current-day games.
Quake 3 - Really advanced graphics forward and was an
extremely good, tight deathmatch experience. It was incredibly refined, welcoming to new players, had many great DM-specific levels, etc. I do think UT was a better "overall" game, but Q3A was very good, too.
Wondering if there is a verdict on Stubbs yet,
Ray
