The Frazetta covers are prolly the Lancer series.

I understand your concerns BUT I have faith in the collective. I can turn out a Conan donkey violence storyline but unless it's really kick-ass it's not going to spread far or matter much. Legit or otherwise I could write the story and distribute through the undergroud. It doesn't matter if it's PD - ref Kirk/Spock love stories.

NB all kick-ass stories should contain donkey violence.

So either you can have fans write stories either professionally or for free and have them distributed throught the peer network and appraised as such or you can have the corporation decide what Conan should be. How does Conan the Christian sound to you? Could be popular.

okay I see what you mean ..the corporation is what's behind the glut of modern conan novels (conan, the unquenchable thirst of ..etc) whereas the fan could (potentially produce work in the vain of say L Sprague Decamp who was a Howard fan ....and no to Christian Conan

Perhaps they should concentrate on getting at least ONE decent product out the door before announcing global multi-platform franchises... just a suggestion.

but wouldnt having conan in the public domain allow anyone to create whatever they wanted with the character? ..I can see that being abused very quickly

In my younger days I had a box of Howard novels that disappeared during a move to a new apartment. Some of the books were rare editions of early conan books from the 50's ...had a version of People of the Black Circle that had original illustrations from weird tales ....also had every novel featuring a Frazetta cover ever printed but alas they're gone

The sorry thing is I used to pick up pulp books at the Woolworths for pence and I had a load of collected stories by pulp writers - most of which I sold before heading to University. Hey ho. I'll never buy those books as cheap - at face value or in real terms.

I read up some more on the copyright situation and while the Conan copyright worldwide is pretty much up during 2006 they've been extended in the US, along with trademarking of the Conan brand which locks up the property for life, effectively. Crock of shit. We will never have another Shakespeare at this rate - we can't afford one.

To clarify - copyrightable works had to be renewed 28 years after the death of the author (1936 in REH's case - interesting story in itself. I think there was a movie made about it which I intended to TIVO but it clashed with a skin flick or something.) with the provision for another 28 years if applied for by the holder but some weren't renewed and some were renewed by the wrong people - hence the stuff in the PD early, so to speak.

So copyright was changed to 70 years from death of author (but not retrospectively) and there's a treaty which recognises US copyright in the UK (and other countries, with some specific changes on the durations) and vice versa but also allows that if a work is in the PD in the US it's also in the PD in the UK.

Meanwhile the public domain has been eroded away even further to nothing in the US through meticulous corporate scraping. You can be pretty sure a colour Disney flick will never enter the public domain.

This article has a list of works in the PD

http://www.robert-e-howard.org/AnotherThought4ws02.html

it cites 239 titles, mostly poems and short stories but there's some meat there too. The blackmask stuff is cool but not comprehensive. You should check their listings for Doc Savage though.

didnt know so many of REH's stories have entered the public domain ..but as I understand it it's only the stories listed, and only a very few are conan. I think the conan property is still copyrighted

I think I've read pretty much every conan story in existence written fully/partially by Howard ...loved his Cormac Mac Art series, Solomon Kane and even Almuric ..too bad a lot of his non conan stories are so hard to find

Odd that this is a licensed game since, as far as I know, Conan is in the public domain in most of the world.

Um, here's a listing of PD RE Howard stories in various formats:

http://www.blackmask.com/Pulp_Fiction/Robert_E__Howard/index.html

I actually read quite a bit of Howard about 30 years ago when I was a kid and loved it. Oddly enough I never really read much Conan though. The western stories and Almuric were probably my favourites but I was a big Edgar Rice Burroughs fan by then. I've read virtually all his major stuff. Actually I think he's gone PD too.

His sketches can be good, but his monologues are horrible and Conan himself is just too self-involved to be funny. Dunno how much money they can really make off of this one.

The less it resembles the movies the better ..I did enjoy the first one, even though it completely butchered 50 years of conan mythos

Here here. Give me the all powerful, uber-barbarian that Howard created. What would be even cooler would be a Morrowind/Oblivion style game that features you playing Conan, or if not Conan someone from his tribe trying to make as big a name for himself as Conan did. That would kick royal ass, not smell like ass.

But yeah a second Blade of Darkness would be just as good. Damn i forgot how good that game was. I want to play it again now

Conan as envisioned by creator Robert E Howard has little to do with the governators bumbling lurch of a barbarian. The less it resembles the movies the better ..I did enjoy the first one, even though it completely butchered 50 years of conan mythos
