Paperman Unfolds

Ragnarok Online Developers Make Paper FPS on 1UP.com (thanks Mike Martinez) announces Paperman, a new PC first-person shooter in the works at Gravity (Ragnarok Online). Details are scant at this point, but they have an outline of what will make the game different:
In an attempt to create a different atmosphere than the typical military or science fiction-themed FPS, Paperman is a 3D FPS where everyone is made out of 2D paper! Characters in the game will have a Parappa the Rapper-style 2D cutout appearance as they move around in the 3D environment. When shot, the paper beings will become full of holes like in the classic comic books, fold in half, or burst into fire. Basically the way the paper people react should give a feeling of fighting living paper. According to Gravity, the game will be a new style of FPS that's very original and tons of fun.

Best sound effects ever in Pencil Whipped! I loved it!

Also, Grandmaster, I am so stealing your bacon idea. I'll give you credits in the manual though.

they are making the assumption that graphics == gameplay, when we all know that is not the case. and when will Asian developers learn that cutesy anime-esque games don't fly in North America?

Hmm lets see, maybe because asia outnummbers North America a zillion to one, so they could care less about satisfying us. Maybe the question should be, why dont NA companys produce cutesy anime-esque games and make a killing in asia.

I would prefer that they were made out of bacon.

It sounds like it is much more advanced than that. XIII just had simplistic colors, sound bubbles, and would slow down/zoom in for killing shots. The enemies were still full 3D models.

This sounds more akin to Paper Mario with letting you make holes straight through items or playing on the "paper" aspect (paper folding, bending, crumpling, flying away, etc.) I would presume that, when the characters turn sideways, you literally get a paper-thin profile of them.
Make a good game, then worry about the look.
Guessing,
Ray

So basically it will be like 13, which was a 2d FPS. Like 13 I guess its a way to crank out a new game with an outdated engine.

I was hoping it would be a FPS about being a paper delivery man, having to go through dangerous neighborhoods full of cars, kids, dogs, creepy old men and other hazards as you use shotguns, trip mines and tactical nuclear weapons to blaze a path through the madness and finish your route.

Actually, that sounds more like a mod for Postal 2.

I remember that Elf: it was basically a Doom era-engine, enemy sprites, weapon sprites, etc.

You're thinking of "Pencil Whipped", an indie game by ChiselBrain software. ChiselBrain's web page seems to have disappeared, but you can still get the demo from FilePlanet. The URL is:

The game's creator, Lon Flickinger, is currently working on a sequel, tentatively titled "Horey Gorey: Pencil Whipped 2". See http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=62052&b=25 for details.

"When I saw the headline I honestly thought it was a follow up to Paperboy!"

That would have been awesome. How come that game hasn't been 're-imagined' yet?

Because when Midway redid Rampage a few years ago, it sucked?

Just how many tons of fun is it? Me, I never play a game unless it's at LEAST four..maybe four-and-a-half tons of fun. Anything less is just too light.
I'm not even really here.

I remember that Elf: it was basically a Doom era-engine, enemy sprites, weapon sprites, etc. The method used in Parappa is abit more complex, and allows for some neat tricks.

According to Gravity, the game will be a new style of FPS that's very original and tons of fun.

And yet all we know or hear about are its graphics, graphics that specifically reference an older, pre-existing game in the press release.
