City of Villains Launches

City of Villains Has Gone Live announces that Cryptic's MMORPG follow-up is live: "City of Villains is available in shops now in a special Collectors Edition, packed with extra goodies, as well as the standard retail package. The monthly subscription entitles gamers to play both City of Villains and City of Heroes®." Here's the official announcement:
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 31, 2005—NCsoft® North America announces that City of Villains™, stand-alone sequel to the hit massively multiplayer online PC game City of Heroes®, has gone live in North America. Developed by Cryptic Studios™ and published by NCsoft, City of Villains introduces a host of new features including the ability to create massive evil lairs from the ground up, and player-versus-player (PvP) zones where villains can battle against hero players from the City of Heroes game.

City of Villains is available at retailers in North America at an anticipated price of US$49.99 for its standard edition and US$69.99 for the feature-packed collector’s DVD edition. Both editions include the first month of online game play, and after the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. Earlier this month NCsoft announced that existing City of Heroes’ customers can purchase City of Villains and subscribe to both games for the single subscription price of US$14.99.

“City of Villains’ players should have no trouble getting in touch with their inner scoundrel,” said NCsoft CEO Robert Garriott. “And since customers can play City of Heroes and City of Villains for one subscription price, it is also a tremendous value.”

City of Villains was created in response to the number one request from players…to be the bad guy. Cryptic Studios has answered that request with dark and startling new costume options, and distinctly villainous missions including heists, abductions and infiltrations. In addition to the robust base creator feature, City of Villains will allow players to use their bases for special PvP base raids. Once super groups obtain and store special items of power in their bases, they will be forced to defend them from other intruding hero and villain super groups.

“Though City of Villains is packed with new features, another key difference is in how you approach your character,” said Jack Emmert, creative director at Cryptic Studios and lead designer for City of Heroes and City of Villains. “Players are going to have to be more aggressive and uncompromising. They will quickly learn that survival is the name of the game, because as a villain you are going to be the target of other villains, lawful authorities, rival gangs and super powered-heroes. So the badder you are, the better you’ll be.”

dont think so

this game was kinda boring. i tried CoH when it launched, then took a few months off, then came back to it, still boring

With the WoW expansion coming out, this add on wont stand much of a chance

Don't let the flashy trailer fool you. You don't do much in this game that could be considered villianous.

I agree with someone that was in Beta: They should call it City of Henchmen.

I downloaded the beta client, setup my account, started the game and just sat there in the newbie area remembering why I quit COH in the first place. It was all coming back to me. I quit the game and uninstalled.

why make a big deal outta not charging someone for another subscription, you can only play one game at a time anyways, and further more COH while not a bad game is a boring game and I think you should adopt the guildwars model of free online play and charge for updates and stuff then Ill play agian otherwise I will bow out.

Yes, nobody can like anything that isn't related to that sophomoric cult Blizzard. I'd personally rather watch reruns of "Murder She Wrote" (and I can't stand Angela Lansbury) than play WoW again.

So, I guess some of us won't be waiting for that expansion after all. I guess I just can't get into running the same quest over and over again (ad nauseam) and mistaking it for "content".

To each their own...

I got bored and dropped out of COH after a while, but I've been pleasantly surprised with COV thus far. I'd recommend it to people who liked COH in the first place.

I'm going to resub for a while I think. I came across some nice touches in the stress test on fileplanet, like missions where you got arachnos henchmen to lead. I'd love to pretend I can be bothered getting my old character to level 50, but I seriously doubt it. I'd like to try some pvp in CoH though, I'd bet team based PvP in it could be fairly fun.

Unfortunately the best part about the game imo is the Character Creator.

After that it's a boring mission romp vs aliens and do gooders.

It was fun for a few hours, but didn't even bring enough enjoyment to me to continue the free Beta, let alone paying a monthly fee.

Now, instead of getting ganked by stealthed infiltrators in Dark Age of Camelot or backstabbed by invisible rogues in World of Warcraft, you can get killed by invisible stalkers in City of Villains.

"US$49.99 for its standard edition and US$69.99 for the feature-packed collector’s DVD"

OUCH and $14.99 a month? Bullshit. All for a treadmill game?

"Earlier this month NCsoft announced that existing City of Heroes’ customers can purchase City of Villains and subscribe to both games for the single subscription price of US$14.99."

No shit sherlock? As if people were ready to shell out $30 a month for the same game? And they write this as if its a BONUS to the customer! Fuck this NCSoft. Stuff it!

Those prices are over the TOP if you ask me.

But it is true. Out of all the 'Main' MMO's out there COH/COV is SEVERLY lacking in content.

And I agree I did the Beta started it up played for about 20 mins and deleted it.

Beyond Character Creation there is nothing ohhhh, ahhh'ish to the game except for playing around with the powers.

I am undecided about this "add on" still. I got to beta test this game and yes the AT's do feel different from there counter parts in CoH but as most people have said it's the same old mission feel of a hero. There's nothing there that grabbed me in saying I'm a bad guy or a villain.

There may be a responce back saying to wait for the higher levels, but I feel that most people won't wait that long to feel bad. The very first day I created my first hero in CoH I felt like a hero going around saving the neighbourhood and slowly progressed to saving the city!

I liked the game very much. It was the subscription that got me to stop playing.

If people didn't like it they're entitled to say so. I don't like the hater posts from people who haven't even tried a game but when you're getting comments from people who tried a game and disliked it, it's perfectly valid. I bought COH on release and was full of hope for it because I like the genre. Played it up to about level 8 or 9 and quit in frustration at what was the worst grind I'd ever seen in a game. By all accounts COV doesn't change this much.

The COH character creator is sweet though. I'd be tempted into downloading a trial of COV just to try that aspect of it out. I don't check my email much and only found out I'd gotten one of those "exclusive" beta invites about 2 weeks ago - now it's too late. Hey ho.
