City of Villains Launches

City of Villains Has Gone Live announces that Cryptic's MMORPG follow-up is live: "City of Villains is available in shops now in a special Collectors Edition, packed with extra goodies, as well as the standard retail package. The monthly subscription entitles gamers to play both City of Villains and City of Heroes®." Here's the official announcement:
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 31, 2005—NCsoft® North America announces that City of Villains™, stand-alone sequel to the hit massively multiplayer online PC game City of Heroes®, has gone live in North America. Developed by Cryptic Studios™ and published by NCsoft, City of Villains introduces a host of new features including the ability to create massive evil lairs from the ground up, and player-versus-player (PvP) zones where villains can battle against hero players from the City of Heroes game.

City of Villains is available at retailers in North America at an anticipated price of US$49.99 for its standard edition and US$69.99 for the feature-packed collector’s DVD edition. Both editions include the first month of online game play, and after the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. Earlier this month NCsoft announced that existing City of Heroes’ customers can purchase City of Villains and subscribe to both games for the single subscription price of US$14.99.

“City of Villains’ players should have no trouble getting in touch with their inner scoundrel,” said NCsoft CEO Robert Garriott. “And since customers can play City of Heroes and City of Villains for one subscription price, it is also a tremendous value.”

City of Villains was created in response to the number one request from players…to be the bad guy. Cryptic Studios has answered that request with dark and startling new costume options, and distinctly villainous missions including heists, abductions and infiltrations. In addition to the robust base creator feature, City of Villains will allow players to use their bases for special PvP base raids. Once super groups obtain and store special items of power in their bases, they will be forced to defend them from other intruding hero and villain super groups.

“Though City of Villains is packed with new features, another key difference is in how you approach your character,” said Jack Emmert, creative director at Cryptic Studios and lead designer for City of Heroes and City of Villains. “Players are going to have to be more aggressive and uncompromising. So you played for 20 minutes yet there is a 'SEVERE' lack of content? With powers to see the whole of the game in 20 minutes, you should change your nick to Nostradamus!

Course we all know you probably didn't even get into beta, and probably played CoH for a few weeks during your free trial period and am the type that follows the totally out-of-the-loop croud that bashes games cause they aren't the ones you play. I'm not claiming I know the above to be true, I'm just making an educated guess.

CoV is very fun IMHO. I didn't judge that from 2 days of beta during a stress test either. Sure it's not REALLY villainous, but it probably restrains itself in order to be politically correct. Think of all the right wing wacko's that'd be breathing down Cryptics neck if you could play a serious villain.

This is one of the best features the City of XXXX games has and I think every massive should incorporate it...

My Global name is @Nucleus Knight, so if you want to say hi, maybe group up (if we're on the same server), that'd be cool...

Wait... he said 'if we're on the same server'... Yes... The feature is that you can talk to anyone on any server, and if they're not there yet, the message is stored for when they log in...

AT times I can defintely be a fanboy about games I enjoy. I'll also be the first to criticize the faults coh or any game has, but in a clear and constructive manner instead of insults and hyperbole.

I've played a great many mmo's, starting back in november '97 with UO. XP debt isn't the worst by any measure, it's a great deal better than acutally losing progress and possibly even levels. It also promotes people playing a little more carefully, I see people who are level 60 in wow who don't know the half of what their class can do or what their abilities are, but they just got there from grinding it. People in games with debt or xp loss tend to learn how to play a little along the way, or give up.

CoV is an interesting game/expansion, but I do have some complaints so far. I think the main one being that prestige is too hard to get, especially for a small "guild" The idea of bases and base raiding is built around being able to field 16-32 people at a time it seems like, for raiding and defending(and the trial to get the Item of Power that is what people raid for) This basically limits small guilds quite a bit and removes a bunch of content from their plates. Most of the other problems I have with Villains would be issues with Heroes carried over, since it's similar gameplay, and I think most people know the limitations of that game.

The game/expansion does add a lot at least, and should keep people occupied/interested at least for a couple months of playing around. I just hope they do tweak some of the issues with bases and small guilds, but I guess you can't please everyone all of the time.

Yeah the debt is now really a non-factor. Yah some people still get pissed about it in-game, but when in a mission, who isn't anymore? Within a few minutes it's gone. I went down once last evening and I was out of debt after the same battle, first time I've seen that. A lot of people quit this game very early <30. Late 20's is where this game now takes off coming into most of your powers. Yeah a year and 1/2 ago your mid 20's was 8+ hours per level and dull, now there down to around 3-4 hours per level.

Still I haven't played a mmo that has anywhere near the battle excitement as COH has with an 8 man team up against 30-40 baddies. I'm amazed at how well the system handles all that action, best fighting model with GW's a unique honorable mention in that regards.

Yeah it's repetitive, it's a mmo. Yeah there is a death penalty, it's a mmo.

Look, you can have your opinion, but that doesn't mean that it's sensible. Sorry, but of the multitude of MMO's I've played, CoH's penalty system was by far the least "harmful" -- and I played before they did most of the XP/debt changes (the only one I recall was increased rewards from mission completion). You still gained XP while in debt, it was just that 1/2 your XP went to pay off debt, the other half went to gaining actual XP.

The only other MMO I've played that was relatively "lenient" was WoW. But I feel that it was actually harsher -- it took far longer to get back to your corpse and the repair costs on equipment were relatively steep.

Wild, nonsensical statements? He's not the one making them. You clearly never played EQ, where people would log out and wait for phone calls rather than miss out on an XP rez -- because the death penalty was so severe that it could take a week of XPing to get back what you lost. And that was assuming you didn't lose a level and get kicked back into a hell level.

oh.. i dont like that idea. i mean, on one hand it makes a base something of value and has a cool "look what i have" effect..
but on the other hand it really makes it sound like a job to get and too long to acquire.. and also makes me think that the reason it will take so long to get is because they want you to keep playing and paying.

realistically, this game doesnt have a ton of content.. so i can see them stringing you along for a while.

still though, having said all that.. i'll probably pick it up here soon.

especially if Battlefront 2 fails.

The Villian versus Hero PvP is live now, the people who pre-ordered Villians got a 3 day head start but heroes were able to go into the zones last Thursday I believe. You can PvP from day one, anyone that enters a PvP zone is reduced or increased to the zone level...so there's no ganking of a bunch of lowbies by a couple of 50s.

There are like 3 or 4 open PvP zones that you have to specifically go into to participate in PvP. Outside of that, there's the arenas. There's no way to get ganked while minding your own business, PvP is entirely optional to the game. They also added gladiators, which from what I understand is a player controlled 'pet' that you get from certain accomplishments. These are used in special arena matches where you can't directly attack, you have to command your gladiators to fight for you.

Superbases are also in the game now, but the amount of cash (prestige) you have to earn to build them is really insane. To the point where a group would play for 2 or 3 months before having enough money to build a raidable base. You also have to buy CoV to even enter a superbase.

And all death penalties are fairly similiar...they slow down your leveling and are a time sink. Of all of the games I've played, I probably liked Guild War's penalty the best, but even it was just more of a nuisance than an actual penalty. CoH/CoV Debt I find debt much easier to put up with than a complete stop to XP gain that you you get from corpse hunting or worse the backtracking of XP/level loss.

Yes, same here. I played CoH for a month and dropped when I hit the 'you must group to do this quest' wall, but right now I need a Beer and Pretzels no-brain mmog to keep me busy for a few weeks and CoH/CoV is perfect for that.

I see some people complaining about xp debt and the like. Yep, it's annoying, but it tries to cause people to play a little less sloppy and have impact on their actions. Yes I hate getting debt, but thankfully they halved debt inside of missions, which is a pretty big thing.

The only people complaining about debt seem to be people new to mmo's or who have only played wow. 95% of all mmo's have some kind of bad aspect of dying(besides damaged equipment in wow) It's just a very common feature in mmo's, wow was one of the first successful games to not have a serious penalty on death and I think it spoils people in a way, though it is also a nice aspect I do like. I do wish games would get rid of death penalties, but in terms of penalties, coh's isn't very severe and you can never lose a level like some games...

That was the same promise they made to add pvp arena's into the CoH game and that took almost a year. So if you're looking to go into pvp with super heroes, buyer beware.

Actually, the 'increase' in XP for CoH was a direct result of AOE and defense nerfing, which meant most people were taking down mobs slower. The debt reductions (missions and now cap) are great, but the debt (and other massives penalty systems) really rather suck...

I would say WoW is the best because you're just losing some time, which sucks, and can really mess up a quest you're working on.

Of course, you can also argue that since massives are all about getting xp (or skills in class-less systems) over time, every penalty is about time and therefor xp (or even loot). The point is, it doesn't feel so good losing anything you've worked hard for, but if there were NO penalties (and WoW is close in some circumstances), then people wouldn't mind dying at all.

Also, pretty sure duration res sickness in WoW is scaled (dependent on # of recent deaths), and I have never had more than 10 mins of it, even have a huge chain of deaths (from wandering in zones I shouldn't yet be in).

I'm surprised no one mentioned the XP debt which penalizes you for playing the game. Or did they get rid of that somewhere along the line? I played up until lvl 27 or so and quit largely because of this. The two steps forward, one step back approach just sucked.

What game does not have some sort of penalty system for death? As was already said below that CoH has increased XP and lowered debt amount (let alone now you don't get any till level 10).

Yes it slows you down but looking at some other games I know:
WoW - travel time back to your body, if you don't do that and want to rez in the graveyard then you get 20 mins of resurection sickness. Plus you have armor that you will have to spend money on to repair which is a grind if you are lower level.

Lineage 2 - When you die you loose 10% of your experience and I'm pretty sure a chance to drop weapons. This gets real nasty if you are having a bad day as you can de-level.

Overall ever MMO has some sort of penalty involved but some just handle it different (I didn't necessarily say better).

Just had to comment on the people that think the WoW expansion is coming out anytime soon...expect a Holiday 2006 release. Not any sooner.

City of Villains looks pretty entertaining, and I'll probably subscribe and play for a few months and then move on to something else. Like Guild Wars, I don't expect to be playing this game for years to come, but it's a fun diversion for a while.

Eh I put Auto Assault in the same boat as COH. I was/am in the beta but haven't reinstalled it scince I last cleaned my computer.
