Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Released

Steam News (thanks Richard and Frank) has word that the Lost Coast HDR level for Half-Life 2 is now available. This page can help you figure out if you match the level's system requirements, and here's word:
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is now available for play for all Half-Life 2 owners.

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, a single-player level custom-created to showcase High-Dynamic Range lighting (HDR) in the Source engine, is available now to all owners of HL2. As a technology showcase, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast's system requirements are very high. During installation, Steam will prompt you if your system does not meet the recommended configuration. We hope you enjoy it.

T, how are you getting killed by the helicopter?

I've only played it twice, but both times the damned helicopter Pwnt my N00B ass. Maybe when I get more time I'll get through it.

I'm playing on normal and I hit the thing with four missiles, it was smoking, but it keeps bitch-slapping me with bullets.

Waiting on Oblivion and playing through Quake 4 for the third time on the fourth difficulty this time. Leave me alone I really like it. they better make expansions. and stuff. and I'm all about Doom 4, Quake 5, Wolfenstein 4, and Hovertank 2. And stuff.

You're immune to enemy attack when you have commentary mode turned on. (You can still die from falling though :D)

CT, how are you getting killed by the helicopter? Maybe it's just me but when I played through on 2 different computers I was invincible, and I didn't do anything special to get that way, so I assumed they just gave you invincibility in the map since the main focus is the tech, not really the gameplay. I guess not everyone was god mode when they played through?

You are truly grasping at straws here.
I don't think so. I'm trying to understand how the hype came about, be it generated in a people's minds, by the community or accidentally by Valve themselves. In the end it all adds up. Maybe you can even blame HL2's success. It was so good that people are desperate for more, always disappointed, never satisfied.

It's kinda like how shows have a lost episode, I thought. It was in the coast unit, and was cut, thus it was lost.

Because they used an incomplete map that had been cut from Half Life 2. It used HL2 characters, enemies, weapons and could be inserted into a section of Half Life 2 game if they wanted to. Reason enough?

See this is what I mean by most hype is generated in ones own mind...trying to claim the title of the map somehow implies that it's going to be something more than it is and was ever touted as being by Valve.

You are truly grasping at straws here.

Hm, just occured to me that the simple act of naming the thing Half Life 2: Lost Coast feels like overkill right there. I mean, c'mon, if it's just a HDR tech demo, why not refer to it as the Source engine HDR tech demo?

So I'm playing Lost Coast and I keep getting killed by that damned helicopter. HDR is cool. Gabe Newell is fat. No, I can't make any intelligent comments right now. I wish id or Raven would release their own version of Steam and provide us with a new Quake 4 level showcasing HDR or some other newfangled technology. That would be cool. I bet they are working on the Quake 4 expansion. I hope. Please. Please.

But anyway, to sum it all up,, Steam is cool,,, Lost Coast is pretty,,,, Gabe Newell is fat,,,,, and I'm going to bed now. Amen.

What's wrong Tumbler? Your opinions are based off of no facts at all? I'm a Quake 4 fanboy, not Valve, HL2 was decent, DOD:S and CS:S wore off me quickly.

Or do you not believe in what you say enough to even attempt to defend it. Cmon, even if it's stupid as hell, which I'm half expecting anyway.

SHOW ME THE HYPE!

*ahem*

Not that anyone needs further evidence that you are just a fool, but if one does, this should serve pretty nicely.

What were you expecting, HL3?

Well, it WOULD have been a nice surprise...

Arguing with Valve Fanboy's is pointless. Valve is the bestest game company ever.

You've been the only fanboy in this thread, actually. An anti-fanboy, maybe, but the only one throwing out opinions as fact with nothing to back it up, and the only one (outside of Riley) with a blind eye to a company.

Actually it's just arguing (lying in your case) with nothing to back it up that is pointless.

I see your point, but I guess it depends to some degree upon how you define hype.

By the dictionary definition of the word.

Hype = Excessive or Exaggerated or deliberately misleading advertising.

And Tumbler...way to back up your words. Keep on trolling!

Ah well, maybe it's some of the community doing Valve a disservice.

Happens with all games. Valve in particular because they do very little hyping of their own. But if Gabe Newell sneezes it makes a few dozen gaming news sites. They're under a very tight microscope. They know it, so they try not to hype much themselves, knowing the internet does it for them, but the result is people complaining about overhype even when it's no fault of Valve.

Not just them, of course. Look at 3DR. They haven't said a word about DNF in two years, yet people still say 3DR should go to hell because they're sick of hearing about it. Honestly, even when 3DR did talk they said very little. The hype is almost entirely fan generated. And it's been almost entirely negative, but any attention is considered hype these days...

Fact is, the majority of all "hype" is generated in ones own mind.

What's wrong Tumbler, you had an opinion, now defend it! We want to see these claims that that you said. This is what reasonable people do, they say something, and then if challenged, they find some sort of authorative source, anything, that shows their side as having some sort of merit. We're on that last phase now. 4 sites have been shown to say it's not much else more than a tech demo

If you're just going to resort to "omg valve nubs" and refuse to act intelligent, then you simply are a coward. Don't give us bullshit, just give us the god damn facts.
