Out of the Blue

The backlog of movies I would like to check out in the theaters keeps growing, and at this point the only thing knocking anything off the list is flicks that close. A couple more are coming out today, and I think I am going to be unable to resist pushing the Doom movie to the top of the list. I don't know that this means I will get out to see it, but I am quite curious about it, and I think I'll have regrets if it were to close before I got the chance to check it out.

I think if you get a 6600GT, you will be VERY happy with it for all your other games for another year to come, when you can hopefully do a full upgrade.

Yup, which was my point.

And Mayor Dan is running it smoothly at 1024x768, 4x AA, with "some" shadows and lights/shaders (I'm guessing minimum level, but I'm just reading his own posts to tell!). It's certainly not FEAR in all its graphical glory, but it sounds a good bit better than what you (JM) have right now.

And, ATI's X7/800 line of cards appears to be nearly impossible to find for AGP. The X700, which was the closest to the 6600GT in performance as I recall, isn't even available for AGP. Which sucks -- it's a good bit cheaper (under $100!!).

Man, it's amazing to look at how on the ball ATI was for the Radeon 9[5-8]00 line and see how badly they fouled things up afterwards. Seems like partnering with MS for their Xbox GPU is the kiss of doom.

Okay, not to open up the whole Bush - Kerry - Republicans -Democrats can again, but here's something that I was curious about. From an article about digital TV

"Stevens reminded committee members that Senate rules require the committee stick to the budget resolution and set aside at least $4.8 billion for the general fund, but Senator John Kerry (D-Massachusetts) suggested the CBO may have underestimated the amount the auctions will raise. "

I thought that if you put yourself into nomination for a position, Senate, Congress, Governor etc, you couldn't keep whatever previous position you had, and couldn't fall back on it if you lost? Am I wrong in that, or is that true, just not for the Presidential race?

Just curious, so let's not start the whole political shit storm again today.

I guess what I really need to know now then is there a better choice than the GF6600 GT thats still a relative bargain and does not require a motherboard upgrade to utilize PCI-e?

Honestly, seeing the way FEAR even makes my machine weep, I think there really is NO budget upgrade that you can make that will give you great framerates.
The 6600GT is probably your cheapest and best option, but don't plug it in there expecting +100% performance.
Fear is a brutal resource hog, and not at all indicative of any other game currently out. I think if you get a 6600GT, you will be VERY happy with it for all your other games for another year to come, when you can hopefully do a full upgrade.

You's picks your poison.

The worst thing I ever saw was when my wife and I went to see Blade 2 in the dollar theatre (yes yes, dumb move, whatever, it was frigging BLADE for 1 dollar total admission!)

The special effects in that movie were amazing. I loved the punch vampire, fist goes into vampire and then it disolves in firey blaze! That movie rocked for the special effects.

I guarantee that in most showings there will be at least one person there with a kid under the age of 8 because they are too damn cheap to get a babysitter or too damn spineless to tell their kids "no, you cannot go to an adult movie" (by adult I mean rated R). I am also willing to bet you will find kids under 5 at showings as well, unfortunately....

The worst thing I ever saw was when my wife and I went to see Blade 2 in the dollar theatre (yes yes, dumb move, whatever, it was frigging BLADE for 1 dollar total admission!)
About ten minutes into the movie, this guy walks in, with his wife, his probably 8 month old baby that he was holding, and two kids who were probably 3 and 4 years old, IF THAT. They could have been 2 and 3 year old.

And I'm not kidding when I say that throughout the movie, these kids were scared SHITLESS. I mean, Blade 2 had enough disturbing imagery in it that I thought "Holy shit, that's freaky."
And here is this fucking asswipe, and his asswipe whore wife, and they're fucking just mentally KILLING their kids.

If I had brought my phone, I would have called the police. That's just fucking child abuse right there...

Edit : I think I need to fire up the trilogy tonight, talking about Blade makes me want to see vampires getting dusted.

No question -- GF6600 GT.

do NOT buy a 6600GT expecting great performance out of FEAR

Well that clears things up!

Seriously though, I appreciate the suggestions. I guess what I really need to know now then is there a better choice than the GF6600 GT thats still a relative bargain and does not require a motherboard upgrade to utilize PCI-e? I'm just looking for the best (i.e. inexpensive) solution that will hold me over until I can afford to do a proper upgrade.

Great? No. But he'll get decent performance. Much better than what he's getting with a 9800 Pro. And it won't cost him an arm and a leg like a 7800 would -- not even counting the need for a new MB.

Wow. Insults now. You and Zeph roomates or something?

My statement shows that we have different opinions on what "internet nerd" is. I would categorize it a very small group. You on the other hand say it is everyone from 18-35. Hay, whatever makes you happy.

You have a skewed defenition of "internet nerds"...It sounds like you are grouping a very large group into internet nerds.

Whatever you say Batman, I'm not going to get into an arguement with you over what my or anyone elses definition of "internet nerd" is. If you want to actually argue the definition...you probably are one.

Thought we were trying to talk about Doom the movie, and you want to argue about something else.

It was an electric chain saw, so it probably had like what…a 50 ft extension cord

Could've been cordless (Ryobi makes one; 18V power pack -- I suspect it runs for a *very* short period of time).

But, more importantly, electric chainsaws are 100% silent until you hit the button -- at which point they're at full speed almost instantaneously.

So you plug it in, you walk over to the victim, and you cut them a new one. Literally. And unless they look up and see you, they'll have no idea.

I still love what a friend of mine's mother did to her former husband one night after he slapped her. He woke up at 3 am to find his "docile" wife straddling his chest with a cast iron skillet in her hand. She informed him that if he ever hit her again that he would not be waking up again. Ever.

I've gone and seen the corpse bride and wallace and gromit at the latest showings possible and still had parents bringing their kids (on a school night) or bringing their babies

I remember seeing Bad Santa and being shocked that some dumbass couple brought their kid to it...(if you haven't seen the movie, suffice it to say, it's VERY adult.)

To be fair, W&G is probably okay for kids above 5. Corpse Bride is for older kids.

But I can top your Bad Santa story. One weekend, we arranged with friends to split a 'sitter so we could go see Kill Bill 2.

Some a**hole parents brought their 11, 7, and 4 year old kids to Kill Bill 2. Seriously. The mom left in a huff part of the way through the film with the 4 year old, but the 2 older kids stayed with dad.

Z and I were just horrified at the complete dearth of parenting shown by those folks.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable upgrade from an ATI 9800 Pro that won't leave me unable to feed my children for the next year but still provide a substantial performance boost?

No question -- GF6600 GT.

You can get a 128MB version of the card for $130-140 from Newegg, and it's available in AGP with no problems. Note that the lowest price card they have listed requires a rebate... you can pay an extra $8 for not having to deal with the rebate hassle.

And no, I don't believe a 6800 or 6800GT is worth the additional expense... although if you decide that you must have 256MB of memory then the best choice is certainly a 6800GT (around $250 after rebate).

Oh, and I'm cheering for the lady with the chainsaw. Take that you wife beater.

And people wonder why Z and I get along so well...

Well, I agree with Z.
But let’s not give to much credit to this women, as the guy was obviously a moron. It was an electric chain saw, so it probably had like what…a 50 ft extension cord. I mean…he should have easily been able to get away. Run around a tree a couple time and make the cord get tangled up, ect. No, he was clearly a moron for not only hitting his wife but could not figure out how to ‘beat’ (pun intended) a 50 ft cord.
