New Serious Sam II Demo

As promised, a new demo is now available for Serious Sam II, Croteam's new shooter sequel. Word is: "This demo incorporates all the changes from the recently released patch. It also contains a new level from the full game (“Greendale”) as well as the level from the initial demo, both of which can be played single player or in on-line co-op. And as a bonus, this demo supports up to sixteen players in on-line co-op, just like the full game (it’s not limited to four like the original demo), allowing everyone to try out firsthand the insanity that is Sam II with sixteen people." The 371 MB download is available on 3D Gamers, 4players.de, Boomtown, Computer Games, Filecloud, FileFront, Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, Playfuls, Seriously!, VGPro, and Worthplaying.

Bonus to Celestial Toad for pointing out the obvious flaws with hyped up reviews of certain Valve properties, and then at the same time blaming other games for those exact same things.

Sir, I salute you!

Not quite the same thing but amusing in that infuriating way of things that make you so mad that you just have to laugh about it, but remember in Deus Ex in the cemetary when the soldiers ambush you while you're in the crypt? If you don't kill all of the soldiers--say you choose to distract them and sneak past--when you reach Jock's helicopter you are forced into a conversation cutscene with him where he babbles on about how romantic Paris is in the springtime, how it's for lovers, how the food is to die for, how he lost his virginity there to a 57 year old whore with syphilis, blah blah blah, on and on--all the while the soldiers have seen you and are shooting the crap out of you and you're forced to listen to senile Jock babble on and on, seemingly unaware that you are seconds away from dying of gunshot wounds. Good times!

LOL. On my current replay through Deus Ex (put on hold because of Baseball playoffs, B&W2, FEAR and soon X3), I had just saved at that area. I was going for a "few kills" approach, with melee weapons only, but that cemetery is a pain in the ass if you try to get through without kills, so I finally gave up, loaded up the ole sniper rifle and capped some monkeys.

Btw, you CAN just click through cutscenes rapidly to avoid the situation you're talking about, but yes it is annoying. Why can't Jock bore you with this shit while you're actually FLYING there?

Well, maybe because he flies this "SuperMegaFantasticHyperRapidHelicopter" that can travel from New York to Hong Kong within 6 hours.
Ofcourse, that's nothing compared to the helicopters in Deus Ex : Invisible War, that take you from Chicago when the bomb goes off, all the way to Seattle, where you have time to settle in, go to sleep, wake up, talk to your friend who has ALREADY figured out the secret buttons and passages in the facility in Seattle, and all this in time to hear a "ground breaking story" on the news about the bomb that has "just gone off in Chicago".

So, a night's sleep, time to discover the layout of the facility, four hour's flighttime, all at the same moment. Those are some amazing time travelling helicopters they have there.
(We'll ignore the fucked up storytelling in that you have no clue what Tarsus is, but in the space of the game's first five minutes, you're evacuating from Tarsus TWICE.)

But yeah, there's several games that do that, and it's a very poor way of handling cutscenes...

Is it me or is the engine smoother than the first demo? I cranked everything up and my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW managed to have smooth FPS at 1152x864 (2x FSAA; 16X anisotropic)! I will play more later.

Same here. I gave up.
I was trying it on a P4 3.2 (#640), Intel 945 chipset, 1 gig ram, Nvidia 6600GT.
Any setting I tried had strange jitters in the action.

On the subject of the PC Gamer Quake 4 review, keep in mind that a 70% score in PC Gamer ranks it as 'good' on their scale.

I can never figure out why people get so upset whenever something doesn't get 9.9/10 scores.

It's not necessarily the score that bothers me, it's the way the reviewer trashes the game. He says it has old fashioned gameplay, yet a lot of people still LIKE old fashioned gameplay.

Another thing I don't get is why they gripe about the Quake III multiplayer remade with the Doom 3 engine.

Half-Life 2's multiplayer (at the time of release) consisted of Counter-Strike Source, which was an old game remade in a new engine, just like Quake 4's multiplayer.

And they complain that Quake 4 has linear point A to point B gameplay, as if other FPS games like Half-Life 2 had totally free-roaming non-linear gameplay like Morrowind or something.

In HL2 you start out in the train area, then move through buildings, then ravenholme, then the jail, then the city, the tower, etc. There is only one way to go, even when in vehicles on large looking areas. HL2 manages to hide the linear gameplay with careful level design and many blocked doorways and blocked roads, etc. But it is still basically linear. And it is just really irritating to see every FPS that comes out compared to HL2 as if everyone on the planet thinks that game was GOD. Okay I'm ranting and I'll shut up now. Actually I think I'll write PC Gamer a letter in response to their Quake 4 Review.

This demo refuses to run well. It keeps skipping as I play, no matter how low quality I go. Doom3/HL2/etc runs great, but this won't.

The intrusive cutscenes mentioned in the reviews sound really bad too.

Having gone through the game once, I'd rather say they are a big bonus for the game. Most of them are completely wacky.
Okay, I'll keep an open mind about that too. In Doom 3 everytime they introduced a new monster you were forced into a cutscene and made to watch it in all of its pixel-shaded, heavily shadowed, high polygon glory (Appreciate our wonderful gorgeous new engine, dammit!). Again and again and again. This is the worst kind of cutscene of all and I hate that in games--when they do it just before a boss battle then "release" you right in the pitch of it. Man, I HATE that. I don't mind cutscenes between levels or even if you meet a new NPC, but in the middle of a level just before a battle? Gaah!

Not quite the same thing but amusing in that infuriating way of things that make you so mad that you just have to laugh about it, but remember in Deus Ex in the cemetary when the soldiers ambush you while you're in the crypt? Yes this is off topic, but I just saw the new PC Gamer magazine earlier today, and I read the Quake 4 review. They do indeed give it a 70%. But I don't care, I'm buying it tomorrow anyway.

I'm considering it as I was a big fan of Quake II and III, but I'm not holding my hopes high... the singleplayer video I saw looked interesting but the multiplayer video looked like a tired rehash of Quake III. Only 9 level for multiplayer is taking the piss a bit, though - it seems that cross platform development means that they cut the corners that made the previous games great.

And it says that the system requirements for Quake 4 are:

2.4 Ghz P4 768 megs RAM, Geforce Ti4800 or better.

So the system req's are a bit higher than Doom 3...

Downloading now. Seriously underwhelmed, disappointed, dismayed by the first demo, but keeping an open mind and I still may buy it yet if this new demo blows my socks off. Yeah that first level was bad but there were so many other things wrong with it that had nothing to do with the level, from the weapons, to the music, to the general feel of the thing. The intrusive cutscenes mentioned in the reviews sound really bad too. But the demo is free so might as well give it a try.
