Sims 2 Holiday Edition

EA Announces The Sims 2: Holiday Edition for PC (thanks Frans) reveals plans for a limited edition of the cash-cow people sim:
Available for a limited time only and listed at the same manufacturers suggested retail price as the original version, The Sims 2 Holiday Edition contains the original game, The Sims 2, in its entirety, plus 40 new holiday-themed items that allow your Sims to celebrate their holidays in style. With this bonus content, your Sims can decorate their house, serve a festive holiday dinner, engineer a visit from Santa himself, even host a rollicking New Year's party!

There may be one or two people who get fooled, but most won't, and although I dislike some of EA's business practises, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that I doubt it's their intention.

Your (b) may be valid, but I suspect this is more in the way of a marketing decision

Well, I never said this necessarily was the case, just that it may be. I'm very cynical of their intentions, but I'm judging yet.

Personally, my only objection would be pricing, but since we don't know what the price will be (although most likely 'full'), it's probably premature to go apeshit over it.
"listed at the same manufacturers suggested retail price as the original version". My assumption is the original RRP rather than, say, the discounted in-store price you'll get for most games that rough age. Perhaps I'm harsh on EA in this respect; shops are more than willing enough to abuse this sort of...ambiguous sense.

a) it fools people into buying the same game twice

There may be one or two people who get fooled, but most won't, and although I dislike some of EA's business practises, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that I doubt it's their intention.

Your (b) may be valid, but I suspect this is more in the way of a marketing decision. As can be seen by the mass "gold" announcements, christmas is the season to have your game noticed. Despite the recent expansion(s), The Sims 2 wouldn't have much press if they didn't do something like this. By re-releasing the game (with a few extras), they can ensure that it's on store shelves, and gets some decent advertising.

Personally, my only objection would be pricing, but since we don't know what the price will be (although most likely 'full'), it's probably premature to go apeshit over it.

If anyone wants to try Sims: The Reality Edition, I have a kitchen you can cook in. I'll even let you mow the lawn and wash my car.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Oh, come on. You don't think it's just a wee bit cynical to - if that is what they are doing - release a 'special' edition with the addition of a few trivial things, and then market it at full price vis-a-vis the 'original' version, for the likely reasons that a) it fools people into buying the same game twice and b) it effectively overrides any in-store discounts on the original retail box?

I don't really have a big problem with EA doing this as I imagine most of the items will probably be made available for people who already own the game. This is just bundling them in the retail box and releasing it at a special time of year.

That was my point.

Not exactly '40' though, is it?

No, it's 21. You'll have to blame EA for that one...or wait and see what they post out there in the upcoming months.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Notice the xmas tree, Menorah, Kinara, etc...all created by Maxis, all available for download (once you login).

We shall have to wait and see.

So they're not even releasing expansion packs anymore, now they just release the game over again, FULL PRICE, plus 40 extra items, knowing full well the Lemmings will purchase it anyways.
