Black & White 2 Patch

An English-language demo for Aurora Watching: Gorky Zero is now available, offering the opportunity to sample a translated/subtitled Metropolis Software's third-person action sequel. The demo surfaced over the summer to little notice, but was discovered by 3D Gamers, where the 158 MB download can be found. The demo is also mirrored on FileFront, Strategy Informer, and Worthplaying.

Read about this patch on the official forums, and they say it makes your FPS drop and deletes your savegames.

You hear that? So no asking "is this the patch that makes the game fun?" ok? Unless, of course, you like that sort of thing.

Actually there is quite a bit of city building/strategy to the game, unforently it's not covered very well in the manual. Like example placement of houses for max happyness, bonus location for the type of land, near other buildings etc.

Check page 12 of the manual, where it talks about placement of buildings. There is nothing about the tooltips when placing and checking buildings for things such has happyness, and what the smiley icons stand for. Actually had to find it out via the Lionhead forums.

It's pretty sad that Peter and Lionhead go out of their way to 'fix' the problems of the first game but royally fuck up... again.

Problem 1) Telling people the patch was going to be out on the 6th, possibly sooner on their web page. Lionhead and Dates don't mix.
Problem 2) The added a patch to skip all the shitty tutorial crap in the first game, but yet didn't included it in the second game. It had to be patched in, and even then you STILL have to go through the vast majority of the tutorials again.
Problem 3)Extremly Lackluster information, and missing information from the manual/tutorial/game.
Problem 4) Really left out the 'soul' from the first game and turned it into a RTS game, instead of a god game.

On the good side is the creatures are alot more independant, but at the same time can be made mindless uber units.

As for the patch, it does delete your saved games, as noted in the patch notes BEFORE you install it that your saved games are not compatible with the patch, hence you must restart.

After reading post 3 and 7 I am convinced 12 yearold boys have been released from their cages.

Have noticed reviews arent very good Gamerankings's average is 7.7 from the gamesite reviews.

I'm enjoying it so far, but it is very frustrating. I don't care for the UI at all. I try to move my camera or pick up a villager and I and up using my force hand and kill them. I don't mind, I'm evil, but it still sucks losing them. I don't feel like I can control the creature as well as I could in the first one. I mean, where the hell are the stats for him? I see it pop open in the corner from time to time, but usually it's just his health.

I should read the whole manual I guess instead of just glancing at it. Also, the lag is TERRIBLE on map 5 (second Japanese map). I can't even play with it and I have all my settings set to low (I'm on a Geforce 6800 with a 2.4ghz pentium and 768 megs of ram). Think I'll install those beta drivers and cross my fingers. I don't know if I can finish the map with this much lag.

It's fun when it works though.

My favorite quote about the patch from the devs is "This patch is not vital" - Swell. So in other words, it won't fix the BSOD I get when trying to play. I swear, I've had my current two boxes in their current configuration since Doom3, and this is the first time I've gotten a full blown BSOD. I wanna like BW2 so much...but can't.

EDIT: reading the patch readme shows that it indeed fixes certain in-game crashes. Apparently they don't consider game crashing to be vital to gameplay, since they state the patch (which fixes crashes) isn't vital. Ugh.

It's only vital if you're experiencing crashes.

Pretty sad this isn't getting a better reaction. Where have all the good games gone?

Peter owes us another apology!

I love these self-righteous people who think the designers owe them something. If you went out and bought their game without trying a demo first (there will be one soon enough for this) and you didn't like it, that's cool. But Peter Molyneux doesn't owe you anything just because you didn't like it (and by the way, that average score on Game Ranking is largely because Eurogamer's review dragged it down.) He's one of the only guys trying innovative game ideas in an era where people think Halo is genius. If you don't like it fine, but until you can design a better game yourself, I wouldn't go claiming a designer owes you a damn thing.

For all you bitching out there in Blues-land. This game is fun. The level of detail and tactile feedback of the islands is astounding. Posting a link to gamerankings then saying it sucks is a good way to make yourself look like a total idiot.

No. There's also the 1up review at 5/10, and three reviews at 3.5/5. The median score would be 70%, lower than the average. Not that I think gamerankings is a the definite tool to measure a game's worth.

Well there were some design questions I would love to ask Peter 'WTF were you thinking when you did this?'.

Example, when you pick up a tree to either put in the store house, improove happyness, or to build with you get a little evil sign, EACH AND EVERY TIME. Why am I being evil if I'm trying to help my people?
If the storehouse is full of wood/ore/grain, why are people still going after these resources even if they aren't assigned to do anything?
If people migrate to my city, and abandon their city, why do I have to go capture it and get even more evil for capturing an abandon'd city? Why am do I get evil for for making an armory? Don't these people want protection?
Why is it 5 times harder to pick up stuff and place stuff compaired to the first game?
My roomate who hadn't played the first game but wanted to try out this one was playing it and got totally frustrated to the point he quit playing.

If you want to play evil the game is a snap, but trying to play good and your pretty much punished through out the entire game.
