BF2 Patch News

EA UK (thanks Chester) has posted notes from the upcoming version 1.03 update for Battlefield 2, saying the patch is in final QA. There are two screenshots of the mentioned Wake Island 2007 map on GBASE, and here's the update:
Battlefield 2 1.03 Update Enters Final QA Pass

That's right, troops. Barring any last minute issues, the 1.03 Update is only a few days from release now. We thought this occasion warranted a post covering the major features and fixes coming in 1.03, so settle back and enjoy.

Wake Island 2007

That's right, the 1.03 update bundles the first Official map release from EA and DICE. In this case the map is a modern-era update of one of the most popular maps from Battlefield 1942 -- Wake Island. The People's Liberation Army has invaded Wake to threaten American supply lines. In response the US Marine Corps has been dispatched to reclaim the island.

The new Wake Island map comes to you free of charge thanks to Fileplanet’s new Battlefield 2 Channel. Visit it at http://www.fileplanet.com/battlefield2.shtml.

New Features

Stats compare - view the extended stats details for any other player in your BFHQ simply by double-clicking on their name on the leader board or using the new search feature
Server Favorites and History - find your favorite servers that much easier. No more searching for them through the main server list
Nickname Prefix - Add and change your clan tag to your account name at will. No more creating alternate account names to cover the changes in your competitive lifestyle
Supply Drop Icons - Supply drops now appear on the main map and within the 3D Map. Find that elusive supply drop much, much quicker
Points for Destroying Command Objects - players now receive points for destroying the commander's toys. Special Forces players rejoice
Server Reserved Slots - Server Operators can now set aside slots for their admins to join a full server at any time
Vehicle Passengers - the names of players in a vehicle with you are now displayed when you enter or change seats
Countermeasures - a reload bar has been added for vehicle countermeasures. You'll always know now when you can set off that next flare

Tweaks

Point Farming changes - DICE has implemented functionality that makes it significantly harder to point farm on Ranked Servers
Mod Support - Mods now work properly with the Dedicated Server! Additionally, the game will automatically switch mods when joining a server that is running a mod you have installed but do not have activated
Map tweaks - Spawn menu map and Commander maps now scale based on the size of the level being played (16, 32 or 64 players). Mini-map also scales automatically based on the vehicle type you are using (manual changes to zoom levels are remembered as well)
Commander scoring - No more TKs from Artillery
Vehicle tweaks - No more accidental kills from bumping a friend with your tank (try to avoid hitting him at speed though) and no more struggling uphill in an APC. Also no more improper TK allocation from vehicle explosions
Auto Team Balance tweaks - Commanders and Squad Leaders now immune to team switch
Anti-Air Missiles - These are now much more effective against fast-movers

…and, of course, more. Look for the patch soon.

As far as the patch, maybe the game will finally be worthy of the shelf space. The BF series is starting to look like what happened to Tribes. I pretty much stopped playing Tribes 2 shortly after it came out with all the problems. BF2 nor T2 should have been on the shelves. I'll load BF2 up, but I get frustrated with the obvious problems and exit quickly. If I'm lucky I'll get at least one round in before frustration takes over. It's not because the game sucks. It's that after umpteen years of playing PC games I hate the fact that game publishers are willing to risk putting the product on the shelves when they know there are problems. The young ones haven't been around long enough to know the difference, and their expectations for quality aren't as high.

I haven't read the posts on the Creative issue on this thread, and some of them apparently have been deleted, but my 2 cents are this. Creative has been throwing trash out for some time. I have used their cards starting with the original SB back in the early '90s and have a SB Audigy 2 Platinum Pro now. They have never been fully fuctional. There have always been problems with them. I gave up on Creative support back in late '90s after calling them in Tulsa about their SB Awe64 Gold card. There teck support guy din't even know there was such a card. He had no clue, he told me to hold on for a minute. I heard his footsteps walk down a long hallway and never come back. I hung up after 10 minutes. When they do work properly they work well, but as far as quality of sound for composing the old Gold card still sounded best. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Creative was a proponent in the market for bad computer components when a court ruled in their favor on an issue where the software was not capable of using the device on the card and the lawsuit was thrown out based on the fact that the hardware theoretically could do what was advertised.

Wierd Zephalephelah, I somehow thought you were older than 12, oh well.. did you actually write all that shit "by hand"? must have taken quite some time.

Anyway, you can stop posting here now, as nobody will take you seriously anymore (or even half-seriously, which is how seriously any sane person should take random forum posts.)

By the way everyone, looks like Creative is having an interesting problem with PCIe. I didn't know there wasn't a PCIe version of the X-Fi cards. I've heard plenty of arguments about PCIe bandwidth not being utilized, but this is the first 'show stopper' I have read about Here is a snip from a guru32.com article...

Update August 30, 2005 - One of the questions that remained to be answered was why Creative decide to go for a PCI only based soundcard, we found at that in the near future there will not be a PCI-Express version of the sound card. Steve Erickson, vice president for Creative's audio products was kind enough to answer that question, here's his take:

As far as PCI Express (PCIe) is concerned, which is the next bus, what we found is that the performance of PCIe is truly bad for audio. We are seeing four times degradation on the bus for audio.

PCIe is designed for graphics and high data transfer, but audio sends very small packets and the overhead can be very big! Moving the data across PCIe is much, much higher than PCI. So what we have to do is go back to the drawing board and work on the transport part of the chip and re-design it to add more silicon to overcome some of the problems we had with PCIe. So for us to come up with a PCIe solution is going to take a while because we have to overcome the problems we're facing with that bus.

Link: http://www.guru3d.com/article/sound/246/16/

I was planning to do away with PCI on my next machine. guess I will wait a bit longer before I do that.

Zeph,

That was seriously pretty sad dude. How anyone can get so pissed over message board posts on a gaming site is beyond me. As I just stated in the post below this one, I never take ANY of you too seriously. To do so would be ludicrous.

I thought e-threats were reserved for people brand new to the internet and children??

Calabi-Yau,

I didn't buy Bose, it came in my S4. Sorry, there wasn't a 'thrifty' Audiovox am radio option. Even if I did, I don't see how it would be a "waste of money". That may be your opinion, but it's not mine.

I never read anything that said they could recreate lost data, and if they did, I would chuckle. I work daily with many types of audio and video compression. I do know that I am looking for a cleaner, crisper sound, with less noise and distortion and this card delivers. I wanted a better 3D soundstage for gaming than the Audigy 2s can create, and the X-Fi delivered that as well. The Crystalizer functionality *DOES* make some MP3s sound better, because it sharpens some of the sounds than can go flat with compression. I actually liked the effect on both full quality CD music and DVD Audio too. Obviously they are not recreating the actual lost data, although the end result may sound a little like it since they ARE enhancing certain sounds.

I don'y care for the software bundle, and I wish they would offer a cheaper card without all the crap, but it's a free market and they can sell it how they wish. I bought the 'cheapest' one, and had planned to take it back if the sound wasn't a decent improvement over my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. Turned out It was.

I hate to break this too you but labels/brands do, quite often, bring better quality with them. In the case of stereo equipment, there are high end brands that spank everything below them. You can stand there and tell me they don't sound better if you want, and I can laugh at you. Your argument about how much money the card is worth is subjective. You can't give your impression of the card, because you haven't used one.

I suggest, since you appear to be a Bluesnoob, that you learn not to take the discussions and arguments here too personally. I don't hold any REAL LIFE ill will toward anyone here. This board is an MMO E-penis fest 24 hours a day. Get over it

Yes, because the Blackhawk is so severely underpowered.

Maybe they could add a tank turret to the belly, too. That would be sweet.

Ha, funnay being called ignorant by someone who buys Bose for his car. Wasting your money on flashy toys doesn't make you smart, or your audio neccesarily any better.

I don't need to try it - for a start it won't work with my motherboard, and for next, I can see (from independant reviews, not fanbois) is that it simply isn't worth the money. _When_ the price gets cut in a few months to half what it is now, I might consider it if I need a new audio board for some reason.

But perhaps you are one of those who believes Creatives extraordinary claims about "recreating" audio data that was lost on the music masters, how's that for ignorant (Apparently the X-Fi can travel in time also...)

And who the fuck am I to tell you? Someone who's more impressed by performance than labels. So Fuck You Too -- I don't appreciate being sneered at and called workshy by smarms such as yourself.

There are definitely issues with the netcode, but it's leaps and bounds better than it was in 1942. So much so, that despite accuracy difficulties on my own part I'm not complaining at all. The stuff that's bothered me enough to quit playing for a while: commander artillery teamkills, lack of teamwork, and other commander difficulties in general (getting people to actually follow orders, getting people to join squads, etc).
