Out of the Blue

Well the consensus seems to be that I will be able to enjoy Serenity without having already seen Firefly, but that seeing the show would make the experience that much fuller. I will have to see how this plays out for us, but with MrsBlue actually interested in catching the film with me (a rare occurrence), I may choose to strike while the iron is hot.

Seconded. Or, watch the movie, then the show, then the movie again. And then the show again.

And my wife loves Firefly as well. So does my coworker's wife who hates Battlestar Galactica. Why? Because it's more character drama than techno-porn. Firefly wasn't written for teenagers; it's a mature show with complex characters.

And it's damn funny, too.

Blue, I would honestly recommend just buying the DVD boxset of the show and having a marathon viewing session or three. The show is superb, the box set doesn't cost much, and there aren't so many episodes that you won't be able to get through it quickly.

I for one welcome our new simian overlords and volunteer as the first Judas ... when their new Monkey caste overthrows our nations and enslaves all to work in their banana factories.
too late, Carl Rove and the RNC already did that in 2001.

Actually, it looks from the preveiws as though Serenity may be a retelling of at least parts of the Firefly story. I seem to remember that whole "do you want to run this ship... Well, You can't!" Dialogue from the TV series. Also the talk about Serenity's 'new' crew member being more than she seems...

Note really. River was always "more than she seemed" through most of the series, and it got more-and-more blatant as the show progressed. She'd say things that she shouldn't know (kind of precog) and things that only someone else would know (mind read). Then there's the whole thing with her kicking serious butt rescuing Mal.

As for Jane wanting to run the ship, Mal always knew one day he'd probably try to take command, particularly since that one scene in the pilot; "The money wasn't good enough. And what happens when it is? That will be an interesting day." The whole question thing was probably just a sarcastic remark like "Do you think you could do a better job?" And Jane shocked him by giving a sincere answer instead of pussy-footing around it.

Then again, that's just my spin.

Some friends of mine loaned me their Firefly DVD box set, and having seen a couple of episodes when it was on the air (back in 2002?), I was eager to watch it in order, commercial-free.

I asked my wife if she wanted to watch it one night, and she told me that she was not interested in "another TV show about a bunch of people in a spaceship". I told her that she would be interested because it wasn't a sci-fi show about Space, but that it was a Western. "Similar to a Western, you mean?" "No, no, it's pretty much just a Western. They have six-shooters, are on the run from the law, have a preacher and a whore on board, the whole bit." "Well...," she said, "maybe I'll just watch the first episode."

Now she's completely hooked. We spent many nights watching the DVDs, often watching "just one more episode", and now we're all psyched about seeing the movie.

Looking forward to Serenity. It's at 80% on Rottentomatoes, so I think we'll be happy.

Silence Jim!

It seems fitting though, doesn't it? Red Sox collapse in ALCS game 7, 2003.

Yankees do the Biggest Choke Job Ever in 2004.

So why NOT have the two face off in the final weekend of 2005 to see which one actually goes to the playoff?

What's next? I mean, what else is left to do? I guess next year, the Yankees get moved to the National League, and the two will face in the World Series, and will still be playing in November, in the 249th inning of Game 7.
