id Software Lawsuit - Adrian Carmack Fired

Videogame Maker Id Software Rejected Offer From Activision (thanks Bob Woodward) is a subscription-only article from the Wall Street Journal based on a lawsuit filed by id software co-owner Adrian Carmack revealing that the artist and id Software cofounder was recently fired (maybe I'm just the last to learn this, as his "retirement" is mentioned in his Wikipedia Bio). Also revealed in the court filings is that Activision offered id $90 Million last year for the DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein properties and was considering making an offer of $105 million for the entire company. The article explains why this information would come to light in court: "Adrian Carmack claims the decision not to sell the company was part of an effort to force him to sell his shares back at a fraction of what he would have made in a sale to Activision. Under terms of a contract he has asked the court to void, Mr. Carmack would have to sell his 41% stake in the company for $11 million, below the $40 million he might have reaped from Activision." It is not clear how Adrian Carmack ended up 41% owner of the privately held company: He was one of its original founders along with John Carmack (no relation), Kevin Cloud, and John Romero, but since then Romero parted ways and Todd Hollenshead and Tim Willits were granted ownership stakes early last year (story). The article's conclusion sums up the legal action: "In a filing earlier this month, he claims the other owners fired him after he refused an offer to be bought out for $20 million. The Activision offer was revealed by a filing by Mr. Carmack seeking to have his employment contract declared invalid. He contends Id's other owners rejected the Activision offer so they could acquire his shares as a price below what they might later fetch." The article reports both id and Activision as either unwilling or unable to respond.

I really dislike when people write "I havent met anyone that thought (this) or (that) was better" as if speaking for some huge Heavens Gate horde or something.

Speak for yourself, or just simply shut up.

Yeah? You dislike it? Well boo-fucking-hoo. Cry me a river, you fucking tampon. I told the truth: up until your little shithole of a post, i never met anyone who thought it was a better game. So, fine, you fucking piece of shit, I don't think that HL2 was a better game than HL1. In fact, i think it's a pale shadow of its predecessor. Got a problem with that?

venomhed, wtf is wrong? your ignorance is killing me! If it wasn't for iD Software the industry would never have got to where it is today. There's still a lot of talent back there and I'm really looking forward to Quake 4 and to see new triple 'A' IP's and franchises come out of them in the future.

Lets face it, SELL ID, SELL!

Their Quake and Doom franchises are so long in the tooth. So many new games are moving forward like Half Life 2 and Battlefield, many others as well, but Quake and Doom are still the same with better graphics.

I would sell out if I were them and go our separate ways since they have jack shit on the plate for original ideas. Everyone else is trying to move forward with their IP's, bail.

Get 40 million and bang hot pussy like Veronica Zemanova and Sylvia Saint, get buff, go live in exotic places and get out of the nerd gaming industry.

I couldn't have said it better myself. In the words of Steve Miller...Woo woo woo...go on take the money and run.

Half-Life 2 is a FAR better game than the original Half-Life. There you've now "met" someone who has said that

To me Half Life 2 was a superior game to HL1. While I love both games I cannot hoenstly say HL1 was better. I guess it would be like Alien vs Aliens, I loved both movies but must admit Aliens to me was the more entertaining flick.

NEway, id dropped the ball with Doom 3 and they'll be very lucky if they can pick it up again with Quake 4

id's not developing Quake 4. And even though they're overseeing it that hardly means Raven's own touch won't be put on it.

If I recall the book said there was an agreement that ownership of shares was conditional on still working for the company. It's hazy and my copy is in work but I'm sure that Romero pretty much fell afoul of this too. OTOH I think the way it looks id are spit roasted. Whatever the rights or wrongs it's going to take some convincing for a judge not to see this as a share-grab. I'm not really caring what id does anymore after D3.

Damn, that reminds me... where the hell is that Battlefield 2 patch? EA should never be let near ANY game and Valve seem to be doing their best to compete with them.

NEway, id dropped the ball with Doom 3 and they'll be very lucky if they can pick it up again with Quake 4. New intellectual property is what they need, not to rip out the train intro and scientists from Half-Life and slap them into Doom 3.

Wait.. Half-Life 2? What the fuck? I'm fairly sure I've never met anyone who said that HL2 was a better game than HL1. So if they aren't able to make a better game, that's not moving forward. "Better" is greater than. "Just as good as" is equal to. "Worse" is less than. In other words: no.

From ShugaShack:

http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=10819116

Papers filed in a suit asking the court to void Mr. Carmack's employment contract reveal a messy squabble among the five highly-paid owners. Mr. Carmack, who was fired as an employee and director earlier this year, claims that executives tracked the hours he worked at the company, refused him access to board documents, and last year halted a long-standing practice of paying out profits in dividends so he would receive less than other directors.

The court documents provide an unusual glimpse into the small but very profitable company. Last year, id Software earned $10.5 million on revenues of $30.5 million, according to financial statements filed with the court. Mr. Carmack and co-founder John D. Carmack, who are unrelated, were paid about $3.5 million a year between 1998 and 2003.

If that's true, then that's some pretty damn dirty dealings going on inside id.

I would have guessed, btw, that id would be worth more than a "mere" 100 million dollars. Doom and Quake are mighty Intellectual Properties, not to mention the id name itself.

Very curious to see how this will pan out.

I have always gotten the impression id Software is not a fun place to work.

But having that on a bio is a sweet sweet thing. [/leaving dreamland]

Which is probably some of the reasons to a lot of people only work there for a title or two before packing up their breifcases.

...heard the story (no idea if this actually true, so grain of salt...) of how John Carmack forced the company to make DooM3, or he'd quit...

Yeah, John posted it in his .plan many moons ago. I believe the general regard was slight shock because you know, you never hear ANYTHING in the way of internal rumblings from id.
