Buena Vista Games makes an Unreal Engine 3 licensing announcement that reveals
Epic's handiwork will power the upcoming return of Turok (story)
on those "next-generation" consoles:

(BVG), the interactive entertainment arm of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), and Epic Games, world-class developers of cutting-edge video games and pioneer of the award-winning Unreal® Engine, today announced an agreement to license Unreal Engine 3 for multiple next-generation BVG projects. The first game under the agreement is based on the popular “Turok” franchise, and will be developed by BVG’s new Propaganda Games studio in Vancouver, British Columbia.
“We have ambitious goals for the future and a strategy to enhance Buena Vista Games’ position as a major force in interactive entertainment. BVG’s intellectual properties, combined with Epic’s leadership in underlying technology, ensures the best game content for consumers,” said Michael Ryder, vice president of worldwide production, Buena Vista Games.
“Licensing Unreal Engine 3 is a strategic move to provide cost-effective and timely delivery of new content, allowing our development teams to leverage the enormous capabilities of emerging next-generation systems,” he concluded.
Lol. Some of the boss fights and monsters/robots you fought were totally badass too. Each new area was a blast to explore and obliterate, discovering tight new weaps on the way..the green plasma gun kicked ass, not to mention the Tek bow. The 1st Turok's chain/mini-gun is still one of my all time favs. So many memorable moments.

Turok was ace. The weapons were worth the admission price alone. While I enjoy realistic shooters with real guns, it's been a while since a game has come out with enormous weapons. D3's BFG sucked. HL2's biggest gun was the phase rifle thing (which also sucked). I want something like UT's Redeemer

have heard that developing a proprietary engine takes as long or longer than making your game. Why wouldn't a design team license an engine? The Unreal engine was designed from the ground up to be supremely modifiable, flexible, and adjustable - seems like an extremely logical choice for an engine for your game.
Again it really just depends on the type of game, IMO. It's better to have an engine built specifically from the ground up for a game such as, say Tribes for all the complex game dynamics. I also can't picture a new Metroid Prime being based on someone else's liscensed engine. I really think this might be the same if they are making the new Turok in the spirit of the very 1st game, which was def the best in the series and the engine (which was technically amazing at the time) was a considerable part of that reason. I'm sure though that this is a none issue now with engines getting more and more flexible as well as advanced.
Also matters what you do with the engine itself...
I wonder if they'll include a 'Nostalgic Fog' option...

Extreme G Racing (N64 and GC)Extreme G is also a PC game. It's too bad it won't run on Windows XP though (It looks like due to the copy-protection).
There's only a handful of memorable Unreal engine games outside UT2k4. Recently we've had the abysmal Unreal 2, Ut2k3, Devastation, Invisible War, Advent Rising, Pariah, Deadly Shadows, and some truly awful Harry Potter and other bullshit titles nobody cares about. You have to dig back several years for the good stuff like Deus Ex, Unreal 1, Return to Na Pali, Wheel of Time. I'm not counting America's Army. It's free and is boring as fuck. The Splinter Cell series went retarded after the first one. Postal 2 is the definition of shit. God dammit, I can keep going on...
In the next year or so there will be a huge influx of crappy Unreal based games. It probably won't be because of the UE3 engine, but the fact everybody is rushing to get something out on the Xbox360. And Epic is offering something cheap and easy for them to do just that.

My question is.... what crazy crap are they gonna do for promotion this game? Offer a million bucks to a grandmother who legally changes her name to Turok for a year like previous games?Acclaim is dead. BVG (Disney) is publishing the game now so at least the stupid stunts are history even if the post-release support is probably worse or no better.
Crytech's new stuff is probably no more than a tech demo at the moment, seeing as how DirectX10 is still a couple years away. You won't see that engine for another 2 or 3 years I'd guess. Besides, the fact that the video footage is using DX10 hasn't really been confirmed as far as I've heard.

A huge chunk of the game developer community can't be wrong. Also, just because it's using Unreal tech doesn't mean it'll be a crappy game. I've played more good Unreal-based games than crappy Unreal-based games. Also, I've played several crappy Source and Doom/Quake based games. Whether a game is crappy or not, has nothing to do with the engine it uses.

That was the brilliance of Acclaim who are, thankfully, nothing but a memory now. They did make a few good games though. Forsaken, Extreme G Racing (N64 and GC), That RC racing game, first 2 Turoks, ummm...a few others I can't remember ATM.

Unless the U3 engine can simply do Far Cry-esque levels without batting an eye (and maybe it can, I really don't know), I have to wonder if that wouldn't have been a better choice. Oh man, the light filtering through the jungle canopy in the Crytech2 tech demo was so friggin' SWEEEET! First thing I said to my buddy as we watched it was "Turok, anyone?"
OTOH, I'm willing to bet they're going to go for more dinos-in-the-city crap, and are turned on by all the pretty pictures of torn-up urban areas.. And I do see a lot more distance-fogging in the U3 previews than you get in FC, so perhaps they felt the need to bring back the signature pea-soup atmosphere of the old games
Best thing they could do really would be to simply re-build the first game using Crytech2.. the franchise took a definite nosedive after Turok, and I really don't have any confidence that they'll turn that trend around, sadly.
