...not sure what to say about this one, really.

Bad? No.

Great? No.

Kind of fun? Yeah.

What I wanted? Not...not quite.

I guess I would say that it is a fantastic sequel to Call of Duty, but it is still Call of Duty. I guess that sums it up; me versus the series.

Compared to Call of Duty, this is great. Looks great, runs great, sounds great, the environment are lush with detail, you do feel much more like you are part of a team/war, and it has made some strives toward realism.
Thank gosh the milk jugs 'o health are gone!
At the same time...it is really hard for me to just get into the flow the of the game - its pacing and unrealistic, arcade feel. You basically have a Halo-like health system (take damage, hide for a few seconds, be back to normal,) you are just charging through everything, the levels are linear, everything is scripted, and it really feels like you are playing a game, not going through an experience.

It is a terrific Call of Duty game, but I still wish the franchise/world had a little bit more strategy and was a little bit more realistic.

My ideal game would have the lethality of CounterSMACK, the technical strategy of BiA, and the realism of DoD.

So, in summary? To each his/her own. This is a very good CoD game, but note quite what I am looking for. The world is very nice and I hope it opens up more; I can see myself purchasing this, but I am in major rush to do so. Serious Sam 2 will be my next purchase, F.E.A.R. after that, X3 after that, and then I would probably still get Myst V before looking at CoD again.

I do not want this to be taken as a bash against the game, but for all the love and attention spent on the world and characters, I just wish the gameplay had evolved as much. Even if the game always needs to stay on the arcade side of things, what I would not give for some more realism.

As for the timing of this, I cannot say that I was overly surprised, though it was a nice shock to see it come out today. Awhile back I posted something along the lines of "Are a number of games about to go gold and have demos or be pushed back?" A ton of demos have come out recently and, if release dates are to hold true, I am eagerly anticipating demos for Quake 4, X3, Oblivion, Gun, and even Path to Neo.
Shhhhh - Tomb Raider, too! But shhhh!
Giving the demo thumbs up, but wanting more from the CoD mold,
Ray
