Morning Q&As

  • Elder Scroll IV
Gamecloud's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Q&A talks with Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks about the next installment in the Elder Scrolls series of RPGs: "We did three whole new combat systems before settling on the one thatís in the game now. We really are striving to get the feeling of guys bashing each other with swords. So it plays better and it looks better. Youíre in control of it more and you understand whatís going on in the game. Thereís no hidden ďto hitĒ rolls that cause you to miss when your sword clearly hits the guy. The stats control the damage you do when you hit, not whether or not you hit. There are special moves you can perform and the blocking is active. So the timing of it becomes a key strategy in fighting."
  • Nice Tech
Gamecloud's Nice Tech Q&A talks with Doug Littlejohns and Paul Baker about their new company Nice Tech and its MMOG technology: "Publishers are still wary about the challenges, costs and risks of developing MMOGs. Nice Tech's technology will provide a solution to these problems. The technology (see below) changes the design process - designers and producers can test content and gameplay in a live environment from the start of the product development process. In addition, the player will not be restricted to follow developer code scripts. The result will be innovative and truly interactive content that will ultimately rival reality itself."

I think you're misunderstanding what the "RP" stands for. Role Playing is the game. Role playing is not stats. Stats are not role playing. Stats are a means. They are there so that you feel like you're getting better at the things you do.

Second, I've only done a limited amount of kendo, but I can tell you that if you're a master with a sword, you're probably going to be proficient enough to stab someone with a knife. Maybe having them as related stats would be more realistic, but frankly, it would be a hassle for me as the player, and other skills like Sneak will do a lot of make sure that most giant sword wielding players won't be able to use a dagger effectively.

Finally, nobody used the thrown weapons. The only time when I used thrown weapons in Morrowind was when I ran out of arrows with my bow. I don't want a month for thrown weapons to be designed and added to the game. That's not worth it for something I never use.

Second finally, I agree about the compass. I'm OK with main objectives showing up on it, but if it's still showing tombs and caves, that takes all the fun out of exploration.

Third finally, play Gothic or Gothic 2.
