BiA3 Gets Unreal

Gearbox sends long their promised announcement, revealing that Brothers In Arms 3 and other of their upcoming games will use the Unreal engine:
PLANO, TX – September 22nd, 2005 - Gearbox Software, L.L.C. and Epic Games announced today that they have entered into an a long-term agreement that will see Epic’s Unreal® Engine 3 technology be the exclusive technology Gearbox uses for next-generation console and PC games for Gearbox-owned intellectual properties. Gearbox has previously licensed the Unreal Engine for the hugely successful Brothers In Arms Road to Hill 30, and upcoming sequel, Brothers In Arms Earned in Blood, on PC, Xbox and PlayStation2. Along with other original, unannounced next generation Gearbox titles, Unreal Engine 3 will power Brothers in Arms 3 (which Sony announced at the Tokyo Game Show is coming to the Sony PlayStation 3).

The unreal engine always seems to be a very pretty one to look at, but the "interactivity" of the worlds is generally lacking.

Have you never played Deus Ex...? That was hella interactive, and powered by Unreal. But it all depends on the developer, not the engine. Duke Nukem was interactive too, and the Build engine is way primitive in comparison (obviously, it was released approx. 10 years ago).

Huh- call me crazy **the crowd yells "You're crazy!!!!**, but I found Riley's comment amusing.

I'm just happy that I don't ever have to see Riley's comments anymore.

I don't get the line about Gearbox PR...

You mean Ray's comment? He said that because Gearbox said that they were going to make an announcement after midnight.. so Stephen (Blue) waited up for it.

It was bizrre to see such lifeless characters in the Vampires game
Of course the characters were lifeless. They're vampires.

I definitely agree that the reason it's getting licensed is because of cross-platform capabilities...

Also, in BiA3 is getting a new engine, that means it's really not part of the series anymore, since a load of people wont be able to run it, seeing as Unreal Engine 3 *requires* a GF6/7 or the equivalent Radeon to power it!

Vampires was indeed delayed many months because of the whole HL2 delay debacle. Valve didn't want another title to ship with their engine before their game got to show it off.

What amazed me though was the fact that the game still felt buggy and unfinished after this multiple month delay. It was bizrre to see such lifeless characters in the Vampires game after seeing such well animated and lively characters in HL2. They sure did drop the ball on that Vampire game IMO.

but wasn't the Vampire release held back until after HL2 shipped

Yes, but I believe that was a marketing decision and not a technical one:

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=54444

Now, I'm not sure if Valve would have allowed a Source powered game to release before HL2 regardless - so maybe there's that. There were games though that were using some features of the UT2003 "engine" before UT2003 ... because Epic makes very distinct builds available.

How many more frickin' "******** gets UNREAL!" headlines are we going to have to endure? Jeez, that's older than a WW2 RTS!

Like Vampire, it probably wouldn't matter much. They aren't waiting for the game to ship
I may be remembering completely wrong, but wasn't the Vampire release held back until after HL2 shipped? I'm sure Google could answer me, but it's been a looong day

Simply put, Epic are offering the best package at the moment for most developers. Cross-platform, dev support, layered upgrades, etc. Good luck to 'em

The unreal engine always seems to be a very pretty one to look at, but the "interactivity" of the worlds is generally lacking. I know more interactivity is possible with the engine (see Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory) but the Source engine just "feels" right.

I am not really a big Gearbox fan at the moment. But I gotta respect them for "going for the throat" by using the Unreal 3 engine. Alot of Devs out there don`t mind being on the assend of Tech. They may have a great game idea, but the endproduct gets kicked in the nads by the lacklustre engine delivery.

Going right TO the Unreal 3 engine right outta the gates is a bold forward thinking move imho. I hope it works out well for Gearbox. It shows they believe in their product, are not afraid to take a gamble, and that they want our dough.

FOX? Are your listening? lol I think Gearbox should do the next AvP. ;p Sell Gearbox the licence!!!!!!!!

This is like the 10,000th announcement for the Unreal engine. They must be doing something right.
