Bone Ships, Demo Released

Telltale Games throws us a bone with the surprise announcement that development of Bone is complete, and that a demo/trial version of the comic book-inspired adventure game is already available. The 73.4 MB trial/demo can be unlocked for the game's purchase price with no further downloads, the demo is available from bone.telltalegames.com and mirrored on 3D Gamers, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying. Here's the news, including word that the way the game was created allows for rapid development of future episodes, the next of which is due in early 2006:
SAN RAFAEL, California – September 15, 2005

Telltale, Inc. is pleased to announce the immediate availability of its first interactive tale based on “Out from Boneville,” from Jeff Smith’s acclaimed Bone series. Visitors to the Telltale website can also download a free demo version of the game.

Telltale, an emerging pioneer in interactive adventures and entertainment, is making this title available through its direct-to-consumer Telltale Now™ channel, for downloading titles over the Internet. This can be accessed at the bone.telltalegames.com URL.

The Bone adventures begin with three cousins – Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone – who become separated in a vast, uncharted desert. One by one, they find their way into a deep, forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures and new mysteries that await them.
Hailed by reviewers and educators alike as engaging for all ages, the Bone books have become the anchor for a series of graphic novels from Scholastic’s new Graphix imprint.

“I’ve worked very closely with Telltale as they’ve been developing this title and have been very impressed,” says Jeff Smith, creator of Bone.
“They’ve done an amazing job capturing the essence of my story and adapting it for a new medium – with great animation, voices, and fun puzzles and games worked into the story in a very natural way.”

“We’re finding that Bone plays really well as an interactive tale,” says Dan Connors, CEO of Telltale. “It has terrific characters, an interesting setting and a story that hits on many different levels. It has something for everyone, with an approachable narrative for kids; fun mini-games and puzzles; and deeper elements for fans of classic adventures and epic sagas.”

Telltale has created innovative tools, designed specifically for rapid development of high quality, space-efficient titles for digital distribution. With this approach, Telltale has the ability to publish new Bone episodes regularly, with the next one scheduled for early 2006.

Those interested in Telltale’s “Out from Boneville” can download a free demo from bone.telltalegames.com and other popular download sites. They can un-lock the full story for $19.99 without any additional downloads.

Yeah, I will skip it for now and see if it picks up some amazing quadruple "A" review somewhere. Even if you played it from the very moment the story came up, you played it for no more than three and a half hours.
And I doubt you even started playing it then...
Not familiar enough with Bone to support the developer,
Ray

I played the full game. Nice to play an adventure game like this. It's pretty nice and somewhat funny. Extremely short however, but that is understandable since this is planned to be an episodic thing. I suppose 20 bucks is worth it, but I doubt it would be for most people.

Ah, the demo was way too easy. At least the puzzle didn't involve distracting somebody.

On the plus side the game runs very well and it maintains a point and click interface versus having 3d controls. I'm interested to hear about the length and quality of the rest of the episode.

I personally like to buy complete stories and not serials, however, the average game is running around 2.5x the price of this episode. For a similiar amount of content, cheaper, and more frequently I might just bite.

"The first thing I thought of when I read "Fone Bone" was E.T."

What kind of a sick puppy wants phone sex with that lovable lil extraterrestial? Be good!

Just kidding.

Anyone remember the Bone Fone speaker system that you'd drape around your neck kinda like a scarf to create sound via (collar) bone induction. Really! Me neither, but I didn't just make it up, honest.

Possibly because he came up with the name about 30 years ago. You just have a dirty mind.

Well that's definitely true.

Oh no, wait, it's nin's fault!
It was my fault. Sorry. I mentioned music in porno movies earlier and it stuck in his mind...

I didn't know the show had been around that long, I thought it was something new.

I always saw them around when I was younger, but I never actually read any of them.
I was too young to appreciate whatever it is/was.
Pretty sure they were a normal comic book, too,

I have absolutely no comment. The demo is literally two minutes long (in gameplay terms.) Technically, I am spoiling it, but oh well: get paper from rock, get dollar, get dollar to buy paper from other character, go through a mini-game running away from bees.

I would suggest it to anybody with broadband and that is bored; it does not take long to download the 77-ish MB demo. It is ok and very functional; you can find things to nitpick, but it does seem like the developer cares about the subject matter and has a brat atop its figurative shoulders. For this level of game, you would expect utter crap, but what little I saw works and the voice acting is very good for the level of game (it is better than some big budget games out there.) For what it is, it seems good.

But...I would have to wait for "official" reviews. I am not sure I would want to pay $20 if the full game is only thirty minutes to one hour long. It really is a non-demo.
There is just too litlte for me to judge.
Waiting and seeing,
Ray
