I'd plunk down some cash for new content, but I won't be buying this.

Steam's Silver package is a good investment for those of us that want to play those "exclusive" mods.. wait a second.. paying for a modification? oh well..

"Half-Life 2: Game of the Year is a special edition release of the best-selling and critically acclaimed title"

It's a special edition release because it says so on the box

I originally bought the "cheapest" option when it first came out, which is HL2 only. (I think it was called the "bronze" package). I wanted to upgrade so that I could buy HL - Source, and was told "nope, that's not an option - - you steam registered the bronze package, and if you want HL Source you have to purchase the whole "silver" option (or higher) and obtain a new reg. number.

In my opinion, this is bad business. You should be able to add stuff if you're willing to pay for it, without reinstalling the whole thing all over again, just to get a new "registration" number. Valve screwed the proverbial pooch on this one ...

If you have a credit card just go for the Silver edition through Steam, still the best deal out there.

I think it IS the best game ever made, so get the knife, gun and matches.

BTW, if you buy HL2 on Steam, EA gets no money, so don't buy it retail

Bugger that, you can get the game in the shops for 15 quid nowadays. In fact, I think I saw the limited edition tin for 20-odd in yon GAME near Princes Street.

EA won't get any money no matter WHERE you buy it, since EA didn't publish it...

Last month this statement would have been correct. Vivendi's deal with Valve ended on August 31st. They signed a new distribution deal with EA in August. This is the first release on that deal.

I saw copies of this in Fry's the other day. It's in a fairly thick DVD Keep case. Dunno how many discs it has, five at least I would imagine, perhaps six if HL:Source is on there too.

But the packaging doesn't give any indication of a publisher whatsoever. No EA logo, not even a mention of EA in the fine print (that I could see).

Half life 2 through gogamer.com $32.90 - http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/GoGamer.storefront/SESSIONID/Product/View/001HAL2

HALF-LIFE 2 BRONZE through steam - $49.99

Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition through Amazon.com $49.99 - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AOE14M/qid=1126554470/sr=8-5/ref=pd_bbs_5/104-2681972-4824759?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846

When are they going to make steam cheaper or at least drop the price?

This is good for those who don't have a credit card and have to buy it in store. Hopefully all on one DVD and without CD checking protection.

Also on a related note I have a friend who's beta testing the No More Room In Hell mod for HL2 and he tells me how it has progressed to surpass the quality of the original HL2 game itself! And the first version should be out really soon too.

Jeeze, is it popular to hate HL2 these days? They're just releasing this version for those who haven't bought the game yet just like any GOTY edition.

Must be, then again anything remotely as popular as this will be hated on this board.

HL2 is still better than DooM3.

Perfectly said. I'm really annoyed when I see magazines and TV shows honoring this game in a manner befit for the original. This game is riding the coat tails of the first. They are 2 very different experiences. One is a ground breaking journey while the other is a flawed mess with TONS of loading.
