My guess is that there reasons other than this for firing him -- either he other problems (either with policies, people, or performance) or the company wasn't doing well and they used this as a pretext for firing him.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. There likely some facts about his story that pizzaboy conveniently left out. Otherwise he'd be out there suing for wrongful dismissal.
