SWAT 4 Expansion Revealed

10-David has some details about plans for a SWAT 4 expansion from a post to the VUG forums based on an article in Computer Gaming World magazine, saying they've been able to unofficially confirm the unannounced project though their insider contacts. Word is the add-on is in the works at Irrational Games Australia (even though SWAT 4 was created by Irrational Boston) and a release is expected in February 2006. They have some details from the print article on the add-on, including new weapons like sniper rifles and grenade launchers, as well as glow sticks for throwing simulated raves.

Meh... I was referring to your collection which correct me if I'm wrong, has been trimmed down quite a bit. Anyway the games you've kept seem... uh, slower paced than Tribes. Thief, System Shock, Myst, some RPGs... I never got into those types of games. I've tried them I just didn't like them much. I dig FPS multiplayer action games plus I don't have time for any of the other genres.

I don't play video games... I play murder simulators.

Irrational or any one of the team members could have released an "unofficial" patch - as has been done many times before this for many other games which had support dropped from the publisher.. or at the very least worked with community programmers to help build a fan patch.. but according to the starseige:2845 crew, the net code was a supreme hack job that shouldnt have been released in the first place

[BTW Ray - I played Tribes 1 with the SOFTWARE RENDERER for 2 years... so quit that whiny ass bitching about the Glide thing - I was down with Nvidia back when it was Riva and TNT, and I paid the price for it too]

im not part of the "tribes community" tho - i really dont have time to be part of any game community... however I am a HUGE fan of the series - and basically T:V worked fine for me from a gameplay perspective... but the net code was just fucking horribly shit

I was also under the impression that there would be more support for mods and such, but apparently the shit code and wacked out SDK (which wasnt even released IIRC) prevented any real progress on that front

so to say that Irrational is totally not to blame is just a bullshit copout... just because you have empathy for game developers (because you are one) doesnt mean they cant fuck up royally

Having completed the main mission, but need to find the ice dragon,

Near the dwarf in the prison who tells you about the Ice Drake, there is a huge wooden wall that's holding up a ton of snow. Grab a barrel of dwarven gunpowder, drop it next to that wooden wall (it's on a bit over an outcropping of rock in that same cell the dwarf himself is in).

The wall will blow up, dumping the snow, which opens a secret passage. The passage will take you to the Ice Drake eventually.

As for it is now rushing me across the land (like two town areas, 3 mission areas) without giving me any quests. It is literally mission - beat mission - new area - ignore area - go to next mission - repeat!
You do realise you don't HAVE to take a mission as soon as it's available, right? Noone is forcing you to keep running through those missions.

But I understand where you're coming from, GW entertained me for a good solid month / six weeks or so, but it got pretty stale after that.

IG has some responsibility. How about not listening to the Tribes community? Which resulted in people in the Tribes community not buying it. When you try to please the masses you risk alienating your fanbase (Tribes community), they gambled that if they "streamlined" it, the tribes community would buy it and so would the masses. But as it turned out neither did the community buy it nor the masses. So they gambled and they lost. Had they listend to the community at least the community would have bought it, and maybe even the masses as well. That's why IG has fault in it as well.

I say again, Tribes is VU Games intellectual property. While Irrational developed the game, they did it the way VU Games told them to. They streamlined it for mass consumption because VU wanted it done that way. When you are developing a game on a subcontractor basis like this, you are severely limited in your creative influence. Irrational did what they were told, it is not them who didn't listen to the community.

/bah

It is...new...but I still am hesitant to say fun.

Unless I missed something somewhere, it is now rushing me across the land (like two town areas, 3 mission areas) without giving me any quests. It is literally mission - beat mission - new area - ignore area - go to next mission - repeat!

It is semi-enjoyable with people, but being limited to eight command really does not give me much of a feeling of an active role in the fighting so much as just auto-fighting and occasionally tossing in a spell/command or two. For all the people in the towns, I often have time finding a group (or a good group - WTF is a level 7 player in Yak's???) so I use the henchmen a lot.

Which, as you know, is a painful experience in and of itself. I am getting tired of six mobs all attacking the healer, my toon getting caught on them, a henchman deciding to go attack a group I clearly walked by, etc.

I want to get to twenty, I will do a few more missions (as I will hit twenty long before I have explored even half the world,) but the type and quality of quests at level twenty will determine if I continue playing or how long I play for...

Ultimately, I just expect or want too much from MMOGs (and I think some of them are a rip off for how much they charge or how little they support their customers.) It seems like they are all, primarily, Diablo online. I would like to see a wider range of genres available or, even if sticking with the fantasy RPG, I would like to see more Baldur's Gate than Diablo (a game I do not really consider a RPG.)
Bah! Go play your flute, nin!

The community is nuts.

I like the basic idea of Tribes, but the stupid community/series is caught up in adding more and more and more and more vehicles and pushing stupidly unrealistic, insane physics.

I have a negative experience with the series due to its poor technical merits. I had a computer that did not even exist when Tribes came out, but the game still ran like sh*t because of glide-itis. Next. I did purchase Tribes 2 at launch, but what a mess. I had no patience to sit around and wait for that game to be fixed. I gave it away a week after purchase.

As stated, I will not touch that series with a ten foot pole now.

And what games do I dig??? I am not particularly partial to RTS, I completely burnt myself out in the C&C and WC days, but I play a fairly wide range of games.

All communities have a dark or mean side to them, but the overall Tribes community is, in my opinion, one of the worse ones out there...
Tribes is an acquired taste of akward systems

With all respect, the Tribes community is insane. I swear they have the biggest e-penis inferiority issue of any fanbase and want this truly bizzare super-mechanized, five million vehicles, bunny-hopping, space-launching jetpacks, completely unrealistic physics game, and that hates any/every/all game(s) from the very start. Toss in a huge dose of visciousness and hatred and mix it all together...voila!

These are the people that could play a current-day tennis game and bitch that there is no tank in the game and that Serena is a stupid n00b for not jumping and, somehow, accelerating fifty fold...

Don’t be blaming IG for the current state of the game or crappy graphics as you put it, SWAT 4 bounced around between developers before IG brought it to the finish linen I’ve been playing this game Coop with friends since its release along with many new maps made by the community and the game isn’t all that bad. It’s a game that requires tactics and skill, and yes it’s not one of those run and gun type shooters it actually makes you take your time and think about the situation and how to win it. This game is not all that bad and the AI is pretty good. If you keep on pissing off Game Developers you will one day wake up wondering why there are no PC games left and only a dumb ass console game left to play.

I said crappy engine not graphics, and I was referring to Tribes Vengeance not SWAT. Just to clarify, I think the graphics in T:V were nice but the Unreal engine leaves a lot to be desired in a Tribes game...

Yes yes, we've heard that rhetoric before. We should drop to our knees and be grateful to all the poor devs who work so hard to bring us our enjoyment. Whatever. Last I checked, they're getting PAID for it.
If today's devs decide they can't deal with it anymore, there will be five new ones tomorrow. Games are a business, they're not going to die out because a few hardcore gamers are bitching about shitty games on a message board somewhere.

Look at Deus Ex Invisible War. Another example of what happens when you "streamline" to please the masses, you alienate your community.

Well, but more understandable, to be honest, since Deus Ex is a 99% single player game (a few multiplayer mods notwithstanding). But completely ignoring the Tribes community was a VERY idiot thing to do, since those were the guys still keeping the entire Tribes scene alive, and are the guys you needed to get the next one off the ground.

Having said that, I think I'd rather deal with a pack of rabid rottweilers than the "Tribes Community", because I don't think I've ever seen a more vicious pack of cockroaches together ever. (No offense to anyone who considers himself part of that community.)
I can see how a dev / publisher would think "Listen to THEM? Yeah right!"

I am not upset because they chose not to support the T:V. I'm ticked because of the bad design decisions which were made by IG and VUG.

The game would have sold better if they had listened to the community and simply built upon the franchise. Instead they dumbed the game down, used a crappy engine, and focused on single player all of which helped lead to the death of the game.
