SWAT 4 Expansion Revealed

10-David has some details about plans for a SWAT 4 expansion from a post to the VUG forums based on an article in Computer Gaming World magazine, saying they've been able to unofficially confirm the unannounced project though their insider contacts. Word is the add-on is in the works at Irrational Games Australia (even though SWAT 4 was created by Irrational Boston) and a release is expected in February 2006. They have some details from the print article on the add-on, including new weapons like sniper rifles and grenade launchers, as well as glow sticks for throwing simulated raves.

Swat 4 is my game of choice for sure just for the coop online! I only can get 56k where I live and Swat4 plays great!! As for Tribes, it blows on my connection, plus nobody knows how to team play on those games anyways!! Swat 4 encourages it!

Heed the advice. And by the way, no offense against the SWAT 4 crowd, but the Tribes community is far larger than the SWAT 4 community.

The tribes community is the same as the flight-sim community: small, fanatical, hardcore to a fault, and hyper-critical.

A brilliant marketing strategist and business person would interpret that as a huge, untapped, hungry market.
The Tribes community is far from huge, and the community is nuts because there is no consensus about what it collectively wants in a Tribes game. You need only look through the many Tribes 1 versus Tribes 2 flame threads and Tribes Vengeance flame threads on various Tribes forums to see that.

Why in the hell do people always think they need to re-invent a great thing,
Because it's a sequel not a remake.

The next gen best engine for Tribes would be Torque TSE because the engine just "feels right".
Then you will be waiting a long time as the engine is far from finished according to its development plans.

There is something skitchy about the Unreal engine physics no matter what game I polay that I dont like.
Tribes Vengeance did not use the standard Unreal physics. They were replaced with Havoc.

The community is nuts. ;)

A brilliant marketing strategist and business person would interpret that as a huge, untapped, hungry market. But hey, you cant sell that market a Pontiac with gobs of plastic and knick knacks when they like BMW's.

Look what Bill did with Halo, which by the way, is another game conceived and influenced by Tribes. Honestly, at this point only Garage Games themselves or maybe MS would be able to handle the Tribes franchise.

Tribes Vengeance is not Tribes 2 nor should it be. There are plenty of things to use and do in Tribes Vengeance without having to recreate Tribes 2. If you want to play Tribes 2, play Tribes

and hence the problem. Why in the hell do people always think they need to re-invent a great thing, especially when they arent even that familiar with it or its audience. Granted in TV they thought; "hey lets ramp up the speed and make things like literally skiing, and focus on a great SP game."

Clueless...Clueless ..Clueless..

So yes VU loses out like a dog with piss poor sales due to piss poor judgement. Honestly, just sell off the darn franchise to someone who can do it justice. VU has no fricking clue. There are tons of dormant players that play other things now, but made right, you'd be suprised at the numbers.

Do the same types of things to the Counter Strike crowd that VU has doen with Tribes, and you'd see a shrinking angry fanbase.

In regards to Unreal engine again. it may look pretty, it may be used in a lot of commercial games, but its just not the right engine for Tribes. The next gen best engine for Tribes would be Torque TSE because the engine just "feels right". There is something skitchy about the Unreal engine physics no matter what game I polay that I dont like. Its good for your standard FPS deathmatch enclosed map style of game. Not something like Tribes. Hell, Id rather use DOOM3's improved engine being developed for ET Quake Wars over Unreal. The physics in the Quake /Doom series have always felt smoother than Unreal. Execs playing Donkey Kong 2005 at E3 have no clue about these nuances or the enthusiast gamer market. Right now they are just trying to sell anything pretty to the masses of casual players and small kids.

Someone bright will organize outside of thhis norm. Its the market it will happen. The whole gaming market is giving the business world hard ons these days. There will be a large succession of pretty crap hitting the market, but hey that cant last forever.

Fallout 1 and 2 both were great Interplay games in design but suffered from horrific bugs that never were patched. Interplay's reputation was damaged for a lot of fans with these two games.

Fallout 2 especially was bad because they abruptly dumped support without warning and left the game a buggy mess.

It was no surprise when Interplay started to circle the toilet as a corporation financially. People stopped buying their buggy products.

VUG should pay attention. They probably would have already been sold if it wasn't for Blizzard's product line keeping the VUG game division alive.

Not taking sides, but as a 'more mature' (read: older :)) gamer, I have to say, Interplay's reputation from the late 90's is positively infamous.

Game was a bit whacked out, but I only ever recall having one crash bug with it. Within in twenty-four hours of contacting support, one of the programmers set up a line of communication via e-mail; he requested a log, tracked down a problem in the game, and supplied a workaround to get through the level load. Shiny can go to hell these days and Messiah had some real AI and design issues, but it was one of my best support experiences.

Other than that one issue, the game ran fine for me the rest of the way.
Matrix is a total mess, though.
Sneaking up and posessing you!,

No, the problem is you're convinced you're always right
LOL! If you really thought I was deluded about being right, why the hell would you care? You wouldn't.

even when proven wrong.
Well you certainly didn't prove me wrong here. Your claim that Klingon Academy was left "in bad shape" is ridiculously wrong.

In addition, even if you were to count Messiah and Descent to Undermountain as games abandoned by Interplay in bad shape, that's two titles to over seven or so in the two series of games I mentioned from Interplay which were not left in bad shape. Even a few bad titles hardly makes Interplay "infamous" at abandoning games in bad shape.

I, too, hate it when publishers drop support for a game instead of fixing it like they owe it to their customers, but it happens far too frequently to single out just Interplay as one which does (or did) it most often.

Interplay was infamous for releasing buggy games and then only producing one patch before dumping the game and leaving it in bad shape.
Klingon Academy using the latest patch is not in "bad shape" by any strech of the imagination. That post you quoted mentions that the developers would have liked to add "additional controller support," but the game worked fine with the joysticks I used to play it. The developer even states in that post "I believe, we still made a great game, despite its shortcomings." Even he knows the game was not left in bad shape.

We list examples, and they you change tactics and say "Oh, well that doesn't count." just like you did in post 73.
In post 70 I asked for some examples. However, the example provided in post 73, i.e. Messiah, demonstrates that the developer was most likely at fault given its history with producing a similarly crappy game for a different publisher. I never wrote "it doesn't count." It is just not a good example if you are trying to blame Interplay for the poor quality of the game.

When proven wrong) You conveniently change the rules again and again
The problem is your examples and comments don't stand up to scrutiny, and you can't stand it when I point that out.

I wish we could have delivered exactly the game all of you have asked for, in every aspect, and bug-free, but we did the best that could have been done under the given circumstances, and, I believe, we still made a great game, despite its shortcomings.

That was simply a crappy idea for a game which no patch could save. Descent 1, 2, and 3 are great games as is Descent Freespace.

Call me a frickin' idiotic moron, uh... on second thought, don't... but anyway, Irrational is one of my FAVORITE developers. I absolutely loved the Freedom Force games, having grown up with comics in the '70's. Swat 4 was amazing imo. I even liked T:V, but didn't like the non-patch.

The Swat 4 expansion is a must buy for me.

I agree. Which is why I said at the very beginning of this thread, "The game would have sold better if they had listened to the community and simply built upon the franchise."

Note the the part where I said "built upon" as in added to not as in dumbed down.

I would play Tribes2 but I got sick of Kata a long time ago and a majority of the servers up either have bots or they are playing a gametype other than classic.

And I am not going to debate why the Unreal engine was a bad choice. I'll agree it looks good on paper, but the execution was wrong... The decision to use the Unreal engine was just another nail in the coffin for T:V. Either you see that or you don't.

Since you never said otherwise... You never played Tribes2.

I don't play video games... I play murder simulators.
