Steam News - HL DM Planned, DoD Source Nears

This Steam Update recaps the release of Half-Life: Blue Shift via Steam earlier this week, mentioning that a follow-up release is planned over the next week or so to provide the high definition player and weapon models that accompanied the original version of the Half-Life expansion. They also offer a screenshot of an "Angry Axis Officer" (apparently pissed that someone replaced his weapon with an entrenching tool) from the upcoming release of Day of Defeat: Source, for which there is no firm release date, just a voluntary neck in this noose: "It's difficult for us to pin the exact date down right now, but rest assured it's not far off." Meanwhile 1UP reports they've gotten word from Valve on plans to release Half-Life (1) Deathmatch via Steam as well. They say the game's graphics will not be improved much for this release, though "the lighting will look superior thanks to the addition of some HDR effects, including blooming." This is a little confusing in light of the plans to introduce HDR in the high-end Lost Coast map, but presumably this will all be cleared up along the way. The story includes a list of 11 maps to be offered, and claims they'll have further details on all this soon. Here's the map list:
    • Boot Camp
    • Bounce
    • Crossfire
    • Datacore
    • Frenzy
    • Lambda Bunker
    • Rapidcore
    • Snarkpit
    • Stalkyard
    • Subtransit
    • Undertow

Whoopy, steam/source news.

To anyone considering preordering the Xbox 360 400$ bundle and holding off till closer to launch I'd suggest getting on that asap. I tried calling over to my local EB and they were sold out of preorders for the 400$ system. (They had only taken like 25 preorders for some reason) Called the next closest EB, sold out. Called an eb in the next city over, they had 2 left.

Don't delay if you want to have the option to buy in November because that privelidge is almost gone. I'd guess they plan on selling bundles once the current pre orders are sold out.

Why on earth are you talking about Xbox in a steam/source thread?? Why not do it in OOTB ?

Anyway, yay for HLDM! I'm also looking forward to DOD:S, although Red Orchestra had already stolen the WW2 MP throne IMO.

I wonder if the bounce pads are cooler in source.. I havent played that far in HL:source yet.

An update, about an upcoming update, to an update.

Valve loves it's metaupdates.

It'd be cool now if they actually released either a)DoD or b) Lost Cost instead of still talking about em.

I didn't know people still played HLDM. I had a lot of fun with HL2DM for about a month or so... Played it at a LAN and it was a blast!

The picture of the "Angry German" is a candidate for caption contest if I ever saw one. "vere iz dees ko-kaine paartee yah?"

So lemme get this straight, the HL1 DM won't be redone in HL2 tech but it WILL be using some HDR? Like IMUS says, "isn't that like putting up curtains on the Titanic"?

Oh where to start. The average US iQ is now 125 I believe. If you have a +100 IQ don't expect me to rescue your juicebox from the trash monster.

Meanwhile:

What is a metaupdate? Be precise - I own a dictionary.

It's part of the definition of IQ that 100 is the average score.

On WoW - Sixis - 60 Paladin of Azure Brigade
On GW - Six Ix - Warrior/Monk of Blue Conclave

People, can we focus please? I know that anything Valve related usually brings out the troll in people, but lets try to keep things clean.

Me, I'll be playing HLDM when it hits again, though mostly just for a few laughs. There's never been anything like the gauss gun and snark to pick off that pesky sniper and/or camper.

A metaupdate is an update about an update. Where's the difficulty? You probably won't find "metaupdate" in your dictionary, but meta is a fairly common prefix with a standardised meaning. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta- (URL includes the trailing hyphen)

with HL2/Source being as nice as it is, are we going back to HL1 stuff? Is a 7+ year old game engine that much better than the one they released last year?

Blue got that part wrong. HLDM is not coming to Steam because it has been already available on Steam for a year but Valve is about to release a HLDM port which will use the Source engine.

Source will get HDR support with the lost coast level and so will HLDM:S. For the rest, HLDM:S will look like HL:S, no major graphical enhancements should be expected.
