Caesar IV Announced

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears: Vivendi Universal Games Announces Development Of Sierra Entertainment's Caesar IV is the press release revealing development of Caesar IV, a sequel from Tilted Mill that "takes the city-building genre into the 21st century," though, of course, the game is set closer to the negative-1st Century. There's a product section for the game on the Sierra website (thanks Frans) with some low-rez screenshots, and game's website offers details, screenshots, more screens, a FAQ, and a movie. Here's a bit on the game, which is due for release in 2006:
Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced development of Sierra Entertainment's Caesarâ„¢ IV (www.caesariv.com), the sequel to the million unit plus selling CaesarTM III, scheduled for release in 2006. Building on the award-winning formula of its predecessor, Caesar IV takes the city-building genre into the 21st century, with new gameplay and features, and a cutting edge 3D graphics engine developed specifically for the title.

"Caesar III was a tremendous worldwide success, with this latest installment, we feel fans across the globe will once again enjoy all this series has to offer," said Bret Berry, Vice President of Production at Vivendi Universal Games. "We are all committed to ensuring that in every aspect this sequel builds on all the qualities that make the Caesar series unique."

I can't take it. Not after the 1000 hours plus I've played Pharaoh.

At least it might be the new 'Best Game Ever'

I don't know why everyone seems to be doubting Caesar 4. Take an in depth look at the website. It seems to me that the game is getting expert treatment and is only a graphical and logical updated version of Caesar 3. In fact the buildings seem to have the EXACT same art but I can't complain because the caesar 3 buildings were excellent for their time and now they are simply 3D. The most major gripe from Caesar 3 is extensivly covered in the FAQ, villagers had zero AI and would walk randomly, that is now fixed and each villager has a job and house they commute back and forth to. I can't wait to play this game, I'll have to add it to my list.

In order of how much foam each game's name produces from my mouth when mentioned:

Spore
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Caesar 4
Age of Empires 3
Fahrenheit [Indigo Prophecy]
Rise of Legends

As long as it runs better than Sim City 4, after that I was pretty much done with city building games, though they are among my favourite sorts of game. Something nice about being creative rather than violent

and hum.. the caesar franchise is, with all due respect, a masterpiece of the Impressions team. I wonder if this new installement will live to its name. I doubt it.

Along with Morrowind, I play Caesar 3 at least once a week. Something about it, it's just the perfect game. I love it...

I used to love Caesar III, hopefully they won't screw this one up... but the way things are going in the gaming industry I'm not holding out too much hope.

Oh hell yes! This is awesome news. I love city building games and Caesar III and Pharaoh were my favs. I really liked Children of the Nile, which is basically the sequel to Pharaoh , and now Caesar IV. I've been wanting a more modern 3D city builder based off Rome and now Tilted Mill (creators of CotN) are doing it (which doesn't suprise me really). It looks so far really good. The engine I'm sure is the same as used in CotN but I hope they beef it up a bit. I for one can't wait for this.

Another city building sim, yawn. I was hopping for game that can actually compete with Rome Total War, guess there isn't a developer out there who can measure up.

Have you ever played the Caesar games? They're fantastic. Ok so it's a city building game, but hey Rome doesnt touch on the city building side much at all.

Not only that but whats the point in trying to compete with a series like the Total War series when they're done so damn well in the first place? I don't know of any recent games that are city building, decent, and based on the Roman era.

I do hope though that they do more of a caesar 2 game than a caesar 3 game, purely because in 2 you could have trading routes and take over other nations.
