Hey, I submitted this one too Albeit without the 'sexy' headline

What makes this article interesting is who wrote it (one of the few who was calling out Enron's oddities before the scandal broke) and what it says about the wierd stuff going on at Take Two. It appears that R* might be searching for a new publisher before too long. And it might be a good idea to sell your Take Two stock

GTA is an OK game design but i don't know why people wet their pants over how breakthru it is - it's no more open-ended or free ranging or innovative than 6 Dozen OTHER games i've owned over the last 2 decades.

If you didn't get it from playing the game itself, I'm not sure how I can explain otherwise to you.

But I'll just say that I bought GTA3 on a whim, when it first came out, and I was amazed by it. No hype involved. It was just extremely entertaining. There's a lot of features that I could point out, but apparently you think that Ultima Underworld has already pulled them off (I'm not going to even begin to try and explain why that's horribly, horribly wrong).

GTA's basic concepts aren't all unique, but they are extremely well executed. A lot of effort has been put into the details, and it shows. It's only been getting better since GTA3. They've got a great formula going for them.

My guess would be that maybe you're a late-comer to the GTA series, and that you've been overhyped to death by your friends and the media. Who knows.

That's all I got to say 'bout that.

forget the sex and violence controversy,
What i don't get about the GTA franchise is why everyone thinks the GAMEPLAY is so breakthrough and innovative.

i played thru the PC version of GTA3 and thought to myself -
"yeah, so... what's the big deal???"

in terms of large, free-form, open-ended gameplay that's the only type of game i normally DO play, and GTA3 wasn't any better or different than anything else i owned before or since.

i hear the following over and over, not just this guy but from respected designers too, and i don't get it:
the game has succeeded in part because it was the first to drop a player into a large, free-ranging three-dimensional world that isn't bound by a script, letting him go anywhere and do anything.
huh? the first? on what planet???
i guess if you ignore every RPG made since Ultima I 20 years ago then yeah it was the first. or if you insist on 3-dimensional, then Ultima Underworld. jeez. it wasn't the First or Best at anything.

GTA is an OK game design but i don't know why people wet their pants over how breakthru it is - it's no more open-ended or free ranging or innovative than 6 Dozen OTHER games i've owned over the last 2 decades.

That article quotes the moron that runs gamepolitics.com.

I can't believe that. The little kid running it has CONSTANTLY been proven confused about what he reports on.
