Land of Legends Gold, Demo

Shrapnel Games sends along the promised announcement that Land of Legends is gold, and that Tiny Hero Game Studios' turn-based strategy game is due on September 21. They are now accepting pre-orders for the full game and they are also offering a demo to allow the chance to sample it in advance. The 67 MB download is available on this Land of Legends Downloads Page, and here's word on the game:
Fast playing and rich with endless strategic possibilities, Land of Legends is an addictive fantasy turn-based game of epic warfare played out in a manageable timeframe. While including a superb single-player campaign that will keep you riveted until the end, Land of Legends truly shines as a multi-player experience. Far too often the main complaint turn-based gamers have about playing online is the fact that games take too long.

Anyone who has played Heroes of Might and Magic online knows that feeling exactly!

Land of Legends though was designed to give players the chance to enjoy a turn-based game against other opponents without the need to devote an entire day to the game.
Playable in a lunch break you can feel the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat in the same amount of time it takes a pizza to get to your house. And with the built-in matchmaking utility finding other players is a snap!

I have a soft spot for Shrapnel as a publisher - not so much because they're really nice people (I don't know) but because they publish niche games that you're just not going to see anywhere else. Yes, Lands of Legends looks like a C64 game but it might be just what a few thousand people with 10 year old computers have been looking for, possibly since emerging from a sleeping sickness induced coma. The main reason I have a soft spot for Shrapnel is that they sold me Space Empires IV, though they now seem to have had their link cut with Malfador, or perhaps vice versa. (for the record - an English wargames specialist shop sold me Space Empires and it was one of the most expensive games I've ever bought, about 50 quid I think. Best value ever though.)

In fact I cranked up my copy of Stars! last weekend and had a couple of hours of fun with that and it runs like a spreadsheet. (I don't have a disk drive so I had to get the install off the Underdogs though I still seemed to need my serial number.)
