Morning Q&As

  • Auto Assault
Auto Assault Hazard Mode & Skills Q&A on Boomtown transcribes an IRC session about the upcoming MMORPG with NetDevil's Ryan Seabury: "We wanted each archetype class to fulfill the same combat roles, but achieve them through mechanically different ways...for each race, the skills are flavored based on the culture of survival for that race to illustrate, using the healer classes. Human Engineers will employ beams and energy based repairing, since Human tech is highly based on light and shielding etc. Mutant Shaman will manipulate the Contamination to create phase-formed vegetation that replenishes nearby allies and Biomek Constructors deploy nanobot technology and automated mini-mechs and bots to help their friends. And of course, there are many other skills that each of those classes has beyond just repairs that are different from each other."
  • Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War: Winter Assault
Gamecloud's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War: Winter Assault Q&A talks with Relic's Andrew Chambers about their upcoming RTS expansion: "The Imperial Guard are the brand new, fully playable race we are adding to the game in Winter Assault. They are really fun to play with because they present the player with a whole new gameplay experience that they can’t find in the existing Dawn of War races. They are a very defensive, very ranged focused race, which opens up a gamut of new and interesting strategies to explore and play with."
  • Gridwerx Australia
Bigluke.net's Gridwerx Australia Q&A talks with Peter Jarrett from this start-up developer about Gridwerx Genesis, their upcoming independent project: "We represent the underdog, the rebel. We embrace the future, to connect the real and the virtual - and exploring the challenges that humanity face in coming to terms with our evolving world. We've got a fantastic bunch of guys (check them out on our web site www.gridwerx.com.au) who are all working part time after hours when they aren't studying, or working on their day jobs to make this dream a reality. We all met for the first time on 30 January after I had interviewed 80+ people. We hit it off, and have come a long way in the last few short months."

I actually just bought and played through this game earlier this week. It is really good, and I really enjoyed the squad based play and insane ranged weaponry you can get. But, (there's always a but) I was disappointed for the most part in the AI, especially towards the end of the game. There were a couple missions where the enemy really pushed back, but for the most part it was incredibly passive. The last two missions felt like mop up from beginning to end. When the enemy would attack your base or strategic points, it was only a couple squads at a time, and a mimimum defensive force would take them out no problem. The enemy would keep sending these small squads that would get ripped apart, instead of sending 3 or 4 at once and overrun my position. Meanwhile, my main force is rolling through the map, picking up new territory, not facing much opposition, because the enemy spent all his money sending his guys to die one at a time. That said, I did enjoy the game, and really want to play it against an actual person, to bypass that dumb AI problem.

I agree, Dawn of War is one of the more memorable RTS campaigns since StarCraft. My only complaint is that it was so short (only get to play 1 side in single player). But really well done in all the ways already mentioned. I'm really looking forward to winter assault

If you love RTS, you HAVE to play Dawn of War. Seriously. It rocks. And I'm a bitter, jaded cynic, so coming from me that says something.

The only downsides to the game, that I found, is that the single player campaign isn't all that great. It's pretty short, and not very cohesive.

Other than that, the game rocks. Great units, great battles, great system, cool voice acting, awesome graphics, and plenty of laugh out loud moments (especially when big mech units tear poor infranty schleps to pieces).

And whomever it was that thought up the use of Cockney voices for the Orcs was a genius.

Dem Hummmeeyyysss Is Gonna Be STOMPED ON!!!

I never picked it up, but love RTS and have a pretty decent machine... is this game worth giving some time to?

Monday I'm picking up the Core game. Still can't believe it's been dropped to 20 bucks. Is there something wrong with the game?

As I write this we are in the final few weeks of development, wrapping up the last few bugs and applying Andrew Chambers - some more polish here and there. Look for the game to hit the shelves sometime around September.

Give me my Winter Assault!
