Evening Q&As

  • Battlefield 2: Special Forces
The Battlefield 2: Special Forces Q&A on GameSpot talks with Mike Doran about the upcoming shooter expansion: "This is a common misconception that we'd love to address. The truth is that work on Battlefield 2: Special Forces began several months ago. The expansion pack is being developed by DICE Canada, while DICE Sweden is running the postlaunch support team. To be clear, we are actively working on the next patch, and development of Special Forces has in no way affected our continued efforts towards supporting the base product."
  • Auto Assault
Mad Max on a car phone on Eurogamer plays 'can you hear me now' with Scott Brown of NetDevil to learn more about their upcoming post-apocaylptic driving gzme: "Certainly with faster paced gameplay comes less down time, and that is the time in other MMOs where players tend to talk more. Functions of gameplay like long travelling distances are instant in Auto Assault. It is an interesting problem to solve but we have already done some work to improve this and with the beta going now are learning more ways to help facilitate this in the future."

"Doom3/HL2 - this is a much more open-ended and actually complex game than those."

I wouldn't say that seeing who can camp a flag without getting carpet bombed in the meantime is any more complex then anything that has been done in several other games.

The problem I have with the BFx series is that it is virtually the same gamepley as all the previous games just with better graphics. There is no real objective gameplay, just non stop capture the flag with vehicles thrown in. It got old with BF1942, but slap some new graphics on it and people will froth at the mouth for reflective water and new rag-doll physics.

I dont knwo guys, I liked bf42 alot, then DC came along and I loved it. Then BFV (created by Dice Canada) came along. I never played DC much after it. I knwo BFV was ruined in the beggining from the m60 fiasco for a lot fo people. BUT, bfv has a certain gameplay or feeling or something that is diffenent than even bf2 making for creating some memorable maps. BF2 seems to cold or impersnal? (dont get me wrong i love bf2 also) Maybe Dice Cananda can give bf2 that warm fuzzy feeling they did for the bf42 engine?

Not only that, but this game is unsurpassed by anything else out there at the moment. If you haven't played it yet (and IF this type of game is your thing) then you are missing out. There's nothing fatally wrong with the game now, although it could use a few tweaks - but this ain't Pacman, or even Doom3/HL2 - this is a much more open-ended and actually complex game than those.

There are three-quarters of a million players registed on the ranking servers. These people aren't filling the web's forums with complaints about how it sucks, they are too busy playing it.

Actually it's extremly playable. I didn't have any problems with the ingame browser UNTIL the patch, but for the most part I rarely have issues with it anymore anyway. My biggest issues are the Commanders who play medics who hop in a jet and can't hit shit. Or the medics you have to chase down for healing cause the only reason they play medic is for the unlocked gun.
Other then that my only complaint with the game is the lack of maps. I am SOOOOO sick of Karkland.

I decided I will never again buy a game without letting it "finish cooking" on the store shelves for a while. Once patched to playability, I'll be all over BF2 and its expansions.

It's playable as it is now.

I think you misunderstand, Tim. I love the Battlefield series, but you've got to face facts. Most of the time early adopters end up paying to be beta-testers. Being a husband and father with a 50-hour a week job limits my game time substantially. When I sit down to play a game, I want to PLAY it, not fight with it.

After the 3 week wait for Valve to make HL2 playable for me (I was victim to the infamous audio stuttering and frame rate drops), I decided I will never again buy a game without letting it "finish cooking" on the store shelves for a while. Once patched to playability, I'll be all over BF2 and its expansions.

No one wants major PC releases to succeed more than I do. PC gaming needs big successes like the BF series.

Even through their negativity people unconsciously admit that this game will still be prosperous many months and years from now.

You played a few rounds of Soldner and lived to tell the tale? Good man.

not all that psyched for this. I hate night maps, expecially with nightvision. Its a gimmick that loses its novelty after a few rounds in other games I've played (Joint Ops, Soldner, etc). No reason to think this will be any different.

Gandhi-

No no, I knew the history of dice/EA, but jumped in anyway on a whim, hoping for the best. Just didn't expect the support to be as ordinary as it is.

I waited with BF42 and BFV, but didnt want to wait with BF2. Now I wish I had. Sour taste gentlemen, sour taste...

I am the same way. I'll wait a few more months before buying BF2.

Eh, I bought the game anyway. I haven't bothered to patch it, it runs fine the way it is. Which, for me to just logon and play for an hour or so is great.

Not trying to troll at all, but ....

Did you guys not know that EA/Dice followed this same pattern with the release of BF1 and BF:V? Why would you jump in, especially with that history, and with a publisher of EA's reputation?

I will buy this game, if at all, a year from now when it is in the bargain bin and all the bugs have been sorted out either by EA/Dice or third party fanbois.
