Sims 2 Backlash Backlash

Electronic Arts Slams Sims 2 Paedophile Claims on SPOnG.com (thanks Mike Martinez) has the response from EA about recent claims (story) of improper content in The Sims 2:
“This is nonsense,” said Jeff Brown, spokesman for EA. “Reasonable people understand there is nothing improper in the game. Reasonable people recognise what mods are. A consumer who chooses to use a mod does so without any kind of agreement with the company. There is no nudity. There is nothing improper or vulgar in the Sims 2.”

Brown continued, “Reasonable people understand the San Jose Mercury News is not responsible for vulgar things that people doodle into the margins of the paper.”

While I applaud your civic-mindedness, the history of U.S. elections in the post-Vietnam era (including the last presidential election) demonstrates that most young people of voting age do not vote.

The sad thing being there was a such a great push to get more voters registered. I even volunteered at the court house where I live to get people registered. Funny, a brit who can't register because he's not a citizen, but volunteering to help register others. Hopefully that'll change in a few more years.

You KNOW someone at Rockstar knew this would be found, and a mod would unlock it.

Or at least have the frame of mind to suspect it would be found.

I hope this fiasco kills EA.

You're just saying that because of spite. Unfortunately, this is the one time we probably need EA's corporate staunch. Unless of course you're going to hire the lawyers needed to stand up to the caliber of Jack Thompson

I'm sorry but I dont count editing a text file and changing a 1 to a 0 (i.e. it has a variable that is for enabling censoring blurs) as a mod.

You're modifying the file.

EA take the moral high ground? why? EA's concern is to the people who buy video games.

Well, these types of arrangements happen all the time in the world. You don't like the organization, but they can surely accomplish you alone cannot.

Someone should make a mod that changes the main character of GTA:SA into Jack Thompson, and all the whores into Hillary Clinton.

It will take more than just some idle rhetoric to make a difference politically. You have to actually get off your ass, go to the polling place, and cast your vote. It also wouldn't hurt for you to bring a few like-minded friends along with you.

Excellent point.
It's a shame your mother was not on it.

Not so excellent. But funny!

Jack Thompson doesn't answer his own email. I wouldn't be surprised if it was automated.

oh yes he does. I've gotten answers (read; insults) back that weren't automated stock replies. I've also seen various people posting their letters from the lunatic. If you send him just insults you won't get a reply, you have to be subtle.

This reminds me of the whole Janet Jackson "funbag incident". Soon as that happened the fundamentalist christians started attacking all media. TV shows started editing out content, Howard Stern ended up signing with Sirius, etc. Should be interesting too see what the impact of this is, if any.

And for the record, I am split on what to think about GTA:SA. On one hand, I think it was retarded of Rockstar to leave content like that on the shipping media, buton the other hand the dumbshit kid violated the EULA.

For the most part, Rockstar screwed up. In this day and age where people are just BEGGING to lynch game companies, they should have been smarter than this. You KNOW someone at Rockstar knew this would be found, and a mod would unlock it.

Morons, if EA loses, no one will make mods anymore. Or make games that can be modded. They will be afraid of getting sued. Gamers as a whole will end up with games that are all clones of one another, no new types of games will be made (worse than what it is now). No innovation from mods.

Whats the most popular online FPS on earth right now? Its counter strike. Still original counter strike. Yeah its a mod.
http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/
1st is halflife 1 (look at the details you'll find its CS original thats most of it)
2nd is half life 2 (look at the details you'll find its CS:source thats most of it, thats a mod of a mod)

Whats 3rd? Battlefield 2. Know what technology is behind behind battlefield 2? Its desert combat stuff. Read the gaming news, dice bought out the little mod group that made that free mod, stole all thier stuff, and then fired the group.

Whats 5th? A free expansion.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
You could think of that as a mod in some ways, sure its an "official" one and I think its a standalone but it still can be looked at in that way.

And yeah, I hate EA too. They sux, they are greedy mfers.

BTW, I agree with post below mine, hilary is no way in heck going get my vote to be president.

tried to write something funny but god I am too damn tires. What needs to be done is we need to organize and advise out senators and congressman that if anyone attempts to ban games like the sims and other not because of the content the games come with but because of some mod or what some dick in miami thinks then we will vote thier ass out of office. After all we have the power. We have the numbers and if that bitch Clinton thinks she is going to be President and limit access to our pasttime, she has another thing coming.

That isn't the "mod" Mr. Brown is talking about here, anyway. He's referring to specific mods that change the models and skins of the characters beneath the blur to be anatomically correct, or remove dating age restrictions, etc. It's already been acknowledged in another interview that beneath the blur is nothing but smooth mannequin-esque bodies with absolutely no skin detail whatsoever. They compared it to Barbie and Ken. Nobody cares that you can remove the blur -- there's nothing there to see.

What Mr. Brown is outraged over is that Thompson actually accuses them of supporting pedophilia and other nonsense because of (entirely user-created) mods out there that remove certain hardcoded restrictions on dating/sex age. Personally, i would be outraged as well. It's a disgusting accusation from a disgusting, petty man.

Hell, even in the Sims University expansion pack, they replaced beer with juice, because of cleanliness zealots. Thompson needs to know when to stop.

Like it or not, EA is on OUR side in this. They are one of the few companies that have the financial means of fighting the FTC and federal crusaders gunning for our hobby. I don't like their business policies, but I'm behind them on this one.

Jack Thompson doesn't answer his own email. I wouldn't be surprised if it was automated. His website, as said, is an Angelfire special complete with cheesy hosting ads. Nothing about his operation is tech savvy. I doubt he could figure out which switch on a mouse to throw to make the email blink.

EA is the enemy so fuggedabout all this they did great crap. The enemy of your enemy is not always your friend. EA won't sue Thompson - that would be inefficient. They can threaten to sink him and if they manage to convince him he'd lose (money) they can point him at their enemy of choice. Nobody knows games like a gamer company formed borg-like from a bunch of people with best intentions who then went on to threaten the universe. I'm talking about EA.

You want to get anywhere send Thompson messages of support. If you win his trust you'll be able to feed him information on other game "debauchery". Your call. You can confront him head on and leave it to the public, or you can make him look stupid and leave it to the public. I honestly hope nobody sneaks into his house some night and slits his throat - you can guarantee some misc gamer will get blamed.
