Sims 2 Backlash Backlash

Electronic Arts Slams Sims 2 Paedophile Claims on SPOnG.com (thanks Mike Martinez) has the response from EA about recent claims (story) of improper content in The Sims 2:
“This is nonsense,” said Jeff Brown, spokesman for EA. “Reasonable people understand there is nothing improper in the game. Reasonable people recognise what mods are. A consumer who chooses to use a mod does so without any kind of agreement with the company. There is no nudity. There is nothing improper or vulgar in the Sims 2.”

Brown continued, “Reasonable people understand the San Jose Mercury News is not responsible for vulgar things that people doodle into the margins of the paper.”

I had the following email exchange with attorney Jack Thompson this morning:

Me: "Dear Mr. Thompson,

Thank you for your efforts to bring the easily
accessed debauchery and perversion built into Sims 2
to the attention of the public.

Now, would you please do something about the nude Ken
& Barbie orgies going on in toy chests across the
country even as we write this? Thanks! "

Mr. Thompson's humbling response:

"No, I think my next cause will be court-ordered sterilization of idiots. Sign in, please."

He got a bit pushy. I wouldn't expect that. It's refreshing.

Some of the people in this thread, though, felt RockStar got what it deserved. Is the nudity in the Sims really all that different than anything in San Andreas? Both were technically there but completely inaccessable without either downloading or buying a gameshark. If RockStar should be beaten into the ground for something you need a mod to get to, why shouldn't Maxis?

On the one hand, it's a hell of a lot easier to get shagging and nudity in the Sims 2 (the whole foreplay thing is part of the game mechanics). Plus it has homosexuality, which we all know will destroy society and probably kill us all before imploding the world.

On the other hand, it's a lot less explicit in terms of what you actually see, and the models - with blur removed - are pretty androgenous unless you download mods. (for one thing, 'sex' in the sims 2 is hidden under blankets or water, etc, usually with cheesy jazz music and none of the usual squelches or grunts)

you could probably turn a Sims house into a seedy brothel of seduction, porn and starvation-based-murder, but that'd only be a reflection of the player anyways (and you'd still need some mods for a shot at proper smut).

I'd say GTA is far worse, but is also far harder to access.

Not true. The nudity in the Sims is not there, just waiting for a code unlock. The artists never made nude textures. You literally have to download mods off the internet to get the nude bodies. How is that Maxis's fault that some idiot downloads those user mods and then gets upset with them?

And thus the ghosts of all the dead lawsuits of the *0' returns to attack the makers of video games.

If any of these cases are won, all modable games will cease, as the risk will be too big.

Jacky-poo stated that these huge selling EA/Maxis games were enabling and supporting pedophiles (one of the biggest reputation-killing terms in this society). The basis of his saying that was that if you removed the blur with a simple code, what was left was detailed genetalia, including on children. That is about as false a statement as I can think of, and can be proven in a heartbeat - just grab a copy of The Sims, 1 or 2, and try it.

I wonder if any of these morons have ever been on the internet. They would probably sue everyone invovled with the internet if they saw web pages like stile or of the like. It just goes to show you how out of tune with reality these people are.

Putting something in print, or stating it publicly, that damages a person's or company's reputation and ability to do business that is proveably false is a very, very sound basis for a lawsuit.

Jacky-poo stated that these huge selling EA/Maxis games were enabling and supporting pedophiles (one of the biggest reputation-killing terms in this society). I'm not saying that EA/Maxis should sue, but if they did want to, they certainly have something solid to work from.
