BF2: Special Forces Announced

With the dull thud still audible from the release of the first abortive BF2 patch, EA and Digital Illusions Announce Development of Battlefield 2 Special Forces Expansion Pack unveils plans for the first expansion for DICE's military shooter sequel. There's also a Battlefield 2: Special Forces Q&A on IGN discussing the project, revealing that new features will include a grappling hook and night vision goggles (along with an end to the nine-to-five war with the inclusion of night maps where the goggles will be useful). Here's a bit from the announcement for the add-on, which is due this fall:
In Battlefield 2: Special Forces, players will choose to fight as one of 6 different Special Forces soldiers -- Navy SEALs, British SAS, Russian Spetznas, MEC Special Forces, Rebel groups and insurgents. Armed with the latest Special Forces weaponry, players can take control of any of the game's 10 new vehicles to engage in major conflicts with up to 64 players. Additionally, persistent character growth allows players to continue to rise through the ranks.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces takes the intensity and quality of Battlefield 2 behind the scenes of news headlines, showcasing the most elite and deadly forces in the modern military world. Using accurate Special Forces weapons, gadgets, and vehicles, these covert armies battle to control key military and strategic locations.

Uh, the point of a grappling hook is to go UP, not DOWN. If you read the text you'd see that as well -- how you won't have to use a ladder.

You mean to tell me those morons in that picture are going UP in an open area - and while under file? Nic, I want to play against those guys, I would make my next rank in a few days! Probably the same people playing the game as those who wrote this wonderful code we are having trouble with.

Also, then pictures where people are using zip lines, you mean to tell me a guy used a grap hook 2x to get that person down from the crane? Come on.

The concept is nice, but I can't think of in the game currently where it would be a good idea to take the time to use it. You would be dead before you got to the top of anything. Best thing to do is have a good helo pilot that is a squad leader and drops people off at strategic locations on the map.

/edit: heheheh nice one nin - and I do understand that they are probably staging pictures for the media, but you could at least take pictures along the lines of PRACTICAL USE.

" I have to wonder how many people actually bought BF2 after BFV..."

I am thoroughly ashamed and have to confess that despite buying BFV and it being an unplayable mess, I got caught up in the hype and bought BF:2 too

Am administering lashes to myself as we speak.

BF:2's got so much potential but it's buried by an atrocious engine and a company that refuses to fix anything any time soon. I would sell my copy but BF:2’s going on Ebay for next to nothing already.

In Battlefield 2: Special Forces, players will pay $29.95 to fight as one of 6 different Special Forces soldiers -- Navy SEALs, British SAS, Russian Spetznas, MEC Special Forces, Rebel groups and insurgents. Armed with the latest patches from DICE, players can take control of any of the game's 10 new vehicles to engage in major crashes to the desktop and all new BSODs with up to 64 players all having to reboot at once. Additionally, persistent character growth allows players to continue uninstalling and reinstalling their game, while keeping promotions.

Why do I keep seeing features from Soldner and Joint Ops being implemented here?

wouldn't I just jump off of the roof of something and use parachute instead of wasting time with a grappling hook

Uh, the point of a grappling hook is to go UP, not DOWN. If you read the text you'd see that as well -- how you won't have to use a ladder.

As for Shataan and Beamer's comments, they don't say anything about "dodging bullets" or more powerful weapons. They're talking about having more abilities like night vision, grapples, zip lines, etc. That's the way I read it.

Still sounds like stuff that they should've had in the release though. Even though I'm enjoying BF2, I have little interest in this expansion.

BF:1942, and Vietnam had bot menus, correct?
Where'd they go, hmmm? Hell. CS:S bots are smarter than the ones they have in here.. Can't tell you how many times I've been run down by my own guys.
How about some accurate AI?
We shouldn't have to go in an edit configs just to get these maps and opponents the way we want them.
Get on the Ball, EA.

EVERYONE FEELS A BIT MORE POWERFUL now

How the hell does that work? You can't make everyone more powerful without also making everyone weaker.

If everyone can do more power with their bullets, that means everyone dies quicker. So the good players feel more powerful and the bad players die quicker.

Or they could also make your hit points higher, which means you do more damage but you take more damage, so you're sitting at the status quo.

Sounds like they're doing a whole lot of nothing.

Lost Coast...more like Lost Hope.

wonder if this comes out before the Battlefield 2 expansion?

It's going to be close.

With the inclusion of the Navy SEALs, British SAS, Russian Spetznas, MEC Special Forces, Rebel groups and insurgents,
it pretty much means there trying io dismantle the CS scene.

I haven’t had any BF2 issues outside of not having enough time to actually play. There have been heaps of games that have been released with bugs that make them utterly unplayable (ie. Boiling Point) The lesson?...The lesson is that you can’t make a game that people want to play that has bugs.

And, frankly, announcing an expansion pack roughly 3 weeks after you release the product is pretty shitty to your customers.

This surprises you, why?

It's ELECTRONIC ARTS!!! This is like the 40th time in a row they've done this, and yet people will keep buying their junk...

I think a lot of people buy/will keep buying games that are buggy on release in hopes that maybe the developer/publisher got it right 'this time.'

Battlefield 2 is fun as hell.
I've had no problems with bugs and the memory leak has (thankfully) not affected me.
The idea of special forces infiltration-type firefights and night missions mixed in also sounds fun as hell.

That is all.

In other news EA denies that the 'new' patch will only be included in the new expanison pack and not released to the public. A highly placed source said "no way is that true, it has just taken us a little longer to squash those nasty bugs and we though the 344 mb patch would be better placed on the pack for the convince of our customers".
He then went on to say, "We will release the patch via Gamespy and the fine network of servers they have to the general public, if it takes us the rest of the year".
