BF2: Special Forces Announced

With the dull thud still audible from the release of the first abortive BF2 patch, EA and Digital Illusions Announce Development of Battlefield 2 Special Forces Expansion Pack unveils plans for the first expansion for DICE's military shooter sequel. There's also a Battlefield 2: Special Forces Q&A on IGN discussing the project, revealing that new features will include a grappling hook and night vision goggles (along with an end to the nine-to-five war with the inclusion of night maps where the goggles will be useful). Here's a bit from the announcement for the add-on, which is due this fall:
In Battlefield 2: Special Forces, players will choose to fight as one of 6 different Special Forces soldiers -- Navy SEALs, British SAS, Russian Spetznas, MEC Special Forces, Rebel groups and insurgents. Armed with the latest Special Forces weaponry, players can take control of any of the game's 10 new vehicles to engage in major conflicts with up to 64 players. Additionally, persistent character growth allows players to continue to rise through the ranks.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces takes the intensity and quality of Battlefield 2 behind the scenes of news headlines, showcasing the most elite and deadly forces in the modern military world. Using accurate Special Forces weapons, gadgets, and vehicles, these covert armies battle to control key military and strategic locations.

well..if they DO read this board then...id be MORE than happy to sit down and help them CONSTRUCTIVELY get bf2 up to a DECENT and ACCEPTABLE level. cause well...it needs a lot of work...optimizations etc. and being on a fresh reinstall *< 24 hours old* bf2 actually runs semi decent now...*30-40fps* at med-high quality with no shadows whatsoever. Id also like to add that the 'fog' effect...isnt that reserved for machines that cant handle anything...like...a playstation? or an atari 2600? blah

ya know...over half these postings are directed directly at dice/ea....do you actually think someone from either of the organizations actually READS this stuff? my guess is 'no' but i could be wrong...

You are wrong. DICE employees have repeatedly posted in BF threads on blues, which means not only do they read it but they respond as well. EA employees read it, but don't respond much, except for a few EA Canada folks. Also, you may not realize it, but blues used to be a very popular board among devs (it still somewhat is, but not quite as much) and hosted .plans for a lot of 'giants' in the industry. Nobody uses the .plan section anymore, though.

BF1942's Road to Rome didn't last long. It was played for a few months, and then no one played it anymore because of mods. I wonder if this expansion will happen for BF2 as well.

Agreed. DC took over, but if I didn't have DC, I would play Road to Rome before I played the original. The maps were a lot of fun.

I am thoroughly ashamed and have to confess that despite buying BFV and it being an unplayable mess, I got caught up in the hype and bought BF:2 too

BF:V was worth the purchase price because of the Point of Existance mod. A mod that was superior to DC and is in some ways superior to BF2 (read; I can actually play it without the fucking thing crashing to the desktop before I even join a server)

Awesome! Now we can have that content that they put into the previews and then yoinked before the game release so they could scrape more money out of us!

"As for Shataan and Beamer's comments"

My point is that the community by in large has whined incessantly, many IN the gaming community that is, that they got owned in earlier games by the so called super soldiers. The non teamplayers etc etc etc. So game devs go go out of their way to force Class reliance so that you can no longer "Rambo". I happen to like that term btw. lol

And it is true. In BF 2 you are pretty ineffective if you are not in close contact with your squad. Now an xpack is arriving to more or less placebo the individual into thinking... using their words in the Q&A, "make you feel like a super soldier". To make the player feel more powerful.

Pretty contradictive... from my pov.

On the other hand, I love BF 2. IMHO it could be a tad more looser and not force so much squad reliance. But as annoying as it can get at times, BF 2 is the most fun I have had since Delta Force 2. And when this xpack arrives, I will be buying it most likely.

My stats don't come up there. I think they are having a problem getting stats from BF2 today.

They just got back online after being down for about 4-5 days. It just takes a little while to get your stats pulled, espically since you just registered.

Boiling Point

Was (is?) that game fun?
Never took time to try it out.

It's a fun game, it doesn't have the production values of BF2 and is pretty buggy overall, but it's like a Morrowind FPS. There's a ton of stuff to do, and the whole game world (around 250 sq km) is available to you all at once with no loading times (after the initial load of course). Apparently the devs are working hard to get a patch out that addresses most of the major issues. I've been distracted by BF2 and GTA:SA lately but I plan on getting back to it after the next patch. It's a bit rough around the edges (reminds me of Operation Flashpoint in that regard) but it's fun.

I like the game, it is alot of fun. But I cant set my controls when I try to bind my keys it says they are already binded. I would think this is something that QA at either EA or Dice would catch. It sucks for me because i'm used to using my esdf instead of the wasd key combo.

You get to use night vision goggles? Wow! So you get to play the game as if using an old green screen monitor. Fabulous!

You get a grappling hook and zip line? Fantastic! I always wanted to be Spider Man. Will be just like playing the old Quake mods.

You thought bunny hopping was bad enough what til the zipper heads take over.

It seems these guys are running out of new concepts for 1st person games.

I think BF2 is a blast. Yeah it has it's bugs that need to be fixed, but I haven't had this much fun playing an FPS online in years.

I just wish more people would use squads correctly. most of the time Im in a squad all it becomes is a mobile spawn point. People become leaders and don't know how to assign waypoints. Or you get some stupid tool of a squadleader who is always in a Fighter and he's useless. I spend a lot of time just trying to find a decent squad leader.

The first Sims 2 Expansion (University) has an advertisement on the back of the Jewel Case for Nightlife which at the time of it's release was not announced. The Sims 2 Moderators were deleting any and all posts they could find relating to Nightlife, and told people not to post about it until an official announcement was made, even though there was an official advertisement for Nightlife on the University's Jewel Case.

This service announcement was not paid for nor endorced by the EA Political Party.

I think this is what most of us are interested in:

GNPC: Are there going to be any new features server or browser side for people to look forward to like a better server admin interface or search functions?

Yee: The focus on this expansion is really on the Special Forces. We also have the live team which is still handling Battlefield 2 support, which is looking at fixing a lot of those other problems.

IGNPC: So hopefully a lot of that stuff will be taken care of before this expansion comes out.

Yee: Hopefully.

So they aren't even focusing on fixing anything. In fact, hopefully isn't a very good answer. No game browser fixes, nothing. Just pushing more content for more money. *sigh*
