Romero Departs Midway

A post to the ROME.RO Forums (thanks Rob) from John Romero himself confirms rumors that the former id Software and ION Storm designer is no longer with Midway Entertainment. The reports first surfaced on Computer Games Magazine yesterday, and we contacted The Romero for a response to the rumors, which he chose to address in the forums:
Hey guys, I can definitely confirm that I have left Midway - I've been gone for about 3 weeks and Rhaluka and I have been traveling around and having fun together (a sort of honeymoon without going to tropical destinations).

Midway says that development of Gauntlet hasn't been impacted by my departure and is scheduled to ship this fall. I can't say anything more about the situation and hope you all understand. (smile)

I'm currently looking at lots of exciting developments right now and it'll be a couple months before I can announce my next destination.

I was kind of looking forward to that Gauntlet. They've always been solid 4 player gaming, and this current generation of consoles is often lacking in that.

The Romero strikes again. Though I'd actually forgotten about his existence when he disolved into Midway.

I was under the impression that this company only made games for cellphones / PDAs etc?

As for Romero, yawn, the guy has become an industry joke. He's been living off the fame of Doom for 10+ years now, isn't it time we stop posting his every move as "news", as if he was somehow still relevant?

Shit, Penny Arcade's FIRST comic was a joke about Romero. It's time to move on.

Paul Steed is doing next gen console/xbox 360 type stuff, last I read anyways.

Romero is the last of a dying era of when you could put a name and a face to the people working behind the scene, now it’s heading back to a faceless industry where individuals are drained of their creativity churning out code and art for the corporation, just like the early days of Atari.

Explains the recent Advertisements I've seen recently.

Heh, apparently he just married some young Romanian girl and is teaching her to map for Doom.

How is this news? It's like saying a cook at a local Denny's is no longer with them.

Hey guys, I can definitely confirm that I have left Denny's.

Denny's says that development of the Egg Bacon Broiler hasn't been impacted by my departure and is scheduled to hit menu's this fall. I can't say anything more about the situation and hope you all understand. (smile)

I thought he cut his hair.

Yeah, he and the Plastic Woman were doing PDA games for a while, something like Johnny Delivery Boy. I thought it was the last stand of the Romero, but then he came back to do Gauntlet, which was getting positive previews (as does everything.)

Oh well, there's always X-Men Legends II in the wings. I hear the first kicked ass, I need to pick it up.

How cute is that?

She marries a guy twice her age and starts playing old games and making doom maps to please him. Personally I find that kind of creepy but I am a bitter woman-hater at the best of times.

I think you might have the ditch-er and ditch-ee backwards.

Also, I think of Romero as the Steven Seagall of the gaming industry. He had an association with something cool in the distant past, but when his name comes up now people just chuckle.

I will say it again, Asshole. This guy has one of the worst track records but he still gets talked about. Why?

Loser and should go back to burger king. I worked with him for 2 days and he was such a lazy, boring slacker. Wasn't an asshole but always responded with 1 or 2 words.
