Romero Departs Midway

A post to the ROME.RO Forums (thanks Rob) from John Romero himself confirms rumors that the former id Software and ION Storm designer is no longer with Midway Entertainment. The reports first surfaced on Computer Games Magazine yesterday, and we contacted The Romero for a response to the rumors, which he chose to address in the forums:
Hey guys, I can definitely confirm that I have left Midway - I've been gone for about 3 weeks and Rhaluka and I have been traveling around and having fun together (a sort of honeymoon without going to tropical destinations).

Midway says that development of Gauntlet hasn't been impacted by my departure and is scheduled to ship this fall. I can't say anything more about the situation and hope you all understand. (smile)

I'm currently looking at lots of exciting developments right now and it'll be a couple months before I can announce my next destination.

How depressing for Blue that his boards have become a sewer of puny right wing hatred.

You bemoan the regression of the boards and in the same sentence do exactly what has caused the boards to go downhill. "Right-wing hatred?" Now that's just plain stupid.

No reflection on Blue or the site, but yeah the boards are just a cesspit - some good stuff but it all gets drowned by purile rantings of jealous idiots who aren't going to amount to bugger all.

I think that was the exact problem...he went from working on a project to managing a project, which is totally different.

I finally decided to play through Daikatana a month or so ago, all patched up and everything. It actually wasn't that bad play-wise, but it definitely wasn't the best.

That said, Romero was probably a good developer, when he was working under a boss, and therfor direction, but he evidently wasn't good at leading.

His wife certainly is attractive though.

It might be a reflection of Romero's management skills more than his programming/designing skills.

I work with someone who was at Ion with John and he has nothing but good things to say about him. Someone who's a good programmer and designer isn't necesarily a good manager/company leader as well. Daikatana was too ambitious and it was very badly managed. It might be a reflection of Romero's management skills more than his programming/designing skills.

I don't get it.

At that website all I can see is a few pictures of this attractive girl posing with her scruffy-looking father, who could use a good haircut and a shave. Where's John?

Seriously, while ID obviously hasn't been the same since he left, he didn't exactly go off to do great things.

I probably spent more time playing Quake 1 than any other game in my life, and I just don't know who to thank for it being the killer game that it was, because I don't think Carmack would know a good game if one sat on him...

So?

Why do we need to know where all these people are going as if they are important or something? lol.

Well he might have lost at the internet, but I'd say he's winning at life.

Fair play to him.

Much better than being jealous and bitter enough to resort to attacking a guys personal life.

His biggest problem is that he's never going to top what he did when he was first starting out.

Which is kind of sad.

Commander Keen - 10/10

Commander Keen was derivative crap compared to the ground-breaking platform games available on the Amiga at the time. Turrican, Gods, the Psygnosis games, etc. True, some of that was the hardware's fault--PCs were still 16-color, low res wordprocessors and calculators back then, compared to 4096 color multimedia Amigas--but the design of the game itself wasn't anything special. It was a demonstration of Carmack's programming abilities and not much of a game. I suppose you could also consider the budget they were working with, but still, it was crap compared to those Amiga games.

I will say it again, Asshole. This guy has one of the worst track records but he still gets talked about. Why?

Loser and should go back to burger king. I worked with him for 2 days and he was such a lazy, boring slacker. Wasn't an asshole but always responded with 1 or 2 words.

Translation: I work at burger king.

Romero probably pulled another one if his "Love me and give me attention or else I'll walk out" B.S. routines again. This guy is as mental as they come. He has serious issues, and the fact that he had to buy a wife instead of actually talking to women and getting one the old fashioned way (As well as constantly bragging about her) proves how truly pathetic of a human being he is.

Romero may have money, but he has no dignity. He is a spoiled brat with low self esteem and an immense ego that attempts to make up for that fact. He thinks the whole world should fall at his feet and when it doesn't, he pitches a fit.

Good riddance you long-haired hippie freak, Gauntlet Legends will probably be better off without you.

He has always shown a great deal of positive energy and has ignored his critics when they were especially unkind.

He could be like Smart and be a jerk about stuff but he always takes the upper road.

Heck, I want to work in a penthouse and drive expensive cars too. More power to him.
