Getting your ass kicked incessantly is NOT fun. I am almost strictly a SP weenie due to suckage.

I don't really have the time to play enough to compete like I used to at the elite level of play like Starcraft required online. People get too good over time.

That's a very good point. I play a game for a month or so, then I move on to something new. Becoming marginally good at an online RTS / FPS takes a lot longer than that.

My preference is:

(1) Single player first to get used to the game
(2) Multiplayer coop with friends against AI
(3) Multiplayer against the rest of the world

I don't really have the time to play enough to compete like I used to at the elite level of play like Starcraft required online. People get too good over time.

Wow, then you my friend have to be the only person in the world.

Again, just because YOU like to play a game a certain way, doesn't mean everyone else does.
I'll play an RTS for Single Player only, unless it's totally smacktastically brilliant in allowing monstrous defense, then I'll take it online.

I don't like rushing / rushers. That's not to say I get owned by them or anything, although I do lose every now and then, it means that I hate using the very first unit to win / lose a map. There's a reason there are 80 units in an RTS. TO BE USED.
(What kind of strategy is it to take one unit and basically tank rush? And yet, this is what Westwood has saddled us with, the C&C "Tank Rush" Legacy. Woohoo.)
I prefer a nice drawn out game, but good luck finding that online. Hence I avoid it usually.

If I can find some peeps I know to play with, I'll play online (and we'll alternate between the defender and attacker), but otherwise it's strictly single player on "Fucking Hell! That Hurts!" difficult.

Then again, DragonShard is made by Ed DiCastillo, and my loathing for him and anything he's touched knows no bounds after he royally raped the Ultima franchise, and it'll be a very damn cold day in Hell before he gets a dime of my money.

Hey Ed? Fuck you.

I also play SP mainly--and often skirmish with the computer.

Getting into online MP games is a hassle as players often drop out, and Starcraft (for example) has deteriorated into "$$$$$$$ SUPERMONEY LEVEL!!!11!elevenbbq!"

Well, so much for that logic.

Me 9. Single Player all the way. Learning curve seems to be insane for RTS multiplayer. At least with FPS after a few hours I can hold my own online.

I'll chime in as #8. I don't care how good the MP is, if the base of the game (the SP) isn't any good, then I don't see myself having fun with it. Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 were so fun offline that I never even bothered to play them online.

I'm really looking forward to Dragonshard. New D&D Universe, some new design ideas, looks good so far.

I'm not a man, I'm a number! Number seven to be exact...
I'll either wait for a SP demo or the "extended" demo before I'll buy this.

Me sixth. Sigh.

I will dabble in MP but there's only so much humiliation I can take and I get all I need from Mistress Celeste.

Wow, then you my friend have to be the only person in the world. Who the heck buys an RTS for single player? I play like maybe the 1st mission or 2 of an RTS game, then hop into some skirmishes with CPU to get better feel for what a multiplayer game will be like, and then hop right into multi. Thats where the fun is at and the only reason I buy RTS games.
