Is it too late to say that cheap monster-closet gotchas aside, DOOM3 rocked? (For me, anyway). Oh, it is? 'kay, never mind...

It still doesn't change the fact that there are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2.

I've never understood why this is such a big deal. This is called code reuse, and in software engineering circles this is a good thing (tm). Ever hear the phrase "why re-invent the wheel?", well it applies to programming as well. If there are parts of the Quake engine that do the job and do it well, why re-write them? All you're doing is increasing development costs and for no reason.

sooner or later people will wise up to the fact that gameplay > graphics... until then we have to deal with shit like Doom 3

Source should be used to make shooters and DoomIII should be used to make... well other stuff. Doom III just did not strike me as an engine appropriate for a shooter. All that lighting and quadrillion polygons didn't make squat for a shooter.

You'd have to imagine it because you certainly don't demonstrate it on these message boards.

I'm sorry if I don't subscribe to the school of crazy, baseless assumptions like you do.

LOL!

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. If Valve ever releases anything on Source regarding Team Fortress, it will just be a quicky and dirty port of the original Team Fortress like the Half-Life: Source crap.

While we're making assumptions, can I assume that Quake IV is going to be another trite FPS with no redeaming value and that Enemy Territory is going to run like garbage? Oh, and Duke Nukem Forever will be the next big thing.

Diligence? That I lack.

Talent? I imagine I'm better schooled in just about any subject than you, starting at coding. But it's useless to get into that pissing match as neither of us can offer any kind of proof.

I do sleep well, though, knowing that I'm the only person that gives you an ounce of attention. The rest of the world writes you off as slightly less than sane.

Even though it seems like the "we hate id Sofware" bandwagon started because of this rather poorly written article is making sudden sheep of everyone here, I'll agree id's influence is nothing what it once was.

Really, they're big talent is making engines, and that really comes down to the labors of one man. Other than that, the company isn't really capable of making that compelling of a storyline in their games, so that's left to the Valve's and IO Interactive's of the industry. I'm never quick to pin an organization's biggest strength on any one aspect, particularly a person, but engines are id's strong point and if John Carmack were to leave and persue another venture, what would id do then?

Oh, you came out of your hole.
I have a busy life that encompases more than reading and posting on these message boards. It's good to see that you missed my words of wisdom. Then again, it's no surprise since you have no wisdom of your own.

Still just one game.
If you had the talent and diligence to create a big budget game title, I am sure you would not think of it as "just" one game. The fact is there are more than two announced Doom 3 engine titles.

And still better than your claims that Counterstrike 1.6 and Day of Defeat are no longer free. Which was interesting.
It's only interesting if you are too stupid to understand what I wrote. First, I wrote nothing of the sort about Day of Defeat. Second, Counterstrike 1.6 is not free if you buy Half-Life via Steam from Valve which is what I wrote. Valve charges extra for a Counterstrike subscription even if you buy the Half-Life subscription which is a classic case of nickel and diming customers to death especially when retail packs of Half-Life that even include Counterstrike in the box can be had for $10 - $20.

First of Camaro you pulled that excerpt from and article about a statement id released concerning leaked images of Quake 4 which was written two years ago(21/07/2003). That article goes on to state..... " No firm date for the launch of the game has yet been set, but it is not expected until Mid '04 at the earliest."

You said yourself id is overseeing and supervising the development of Quake IV.
They do not exclusively make game engines.

And unreal engine 3 is destroying all of them in terms of licensing. What's the point?
Indeed, what was the point of bringing up that UE3 is beating them both in turns of licensing? The original commentor was trying to push an invalid fact that the Doom 3 engine was being licensed more than the Source engine, in what I'm guessing to be a vain attempt to try and justify the Doom 3 engine's existance. Hence why I posted a list of all the licenses: to show that it ain't even beating Valve, who are really the new guys when it comes to this sort of thing. Which is kind of sad when you think about it.

Last time I checked id was still making a game called Quake 4. id is a company that develops is own engines and makes games using those engines. Is that a difficult fact to grasp?

from http://quake4.ravengames.com/ ---

Quake IV, like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, is a continuation of a popular id Software franchise which is being developed by a different studio (Raven, in this instance) under the supervision of id itself. No firm date for the launch of the game has yet been set, but it is not expected until Mid '04 at the earliest.

id software is not making Quake 4. id software is supervising the creation of Quake 4. Big difference there. Noone at id is making levels for Quake 4. Noone at id is doing any programming for Quake 4. Noone at id is making textures for Quake 4. If the gameplay is top notch it's because Raven Software made it that way, not id. All id has done the past 10 years is rehash the same tired weapons and techno-satanic atmosphere. They're a one-trick pony and the trick is getting old. Maybe it really is a good time for John to go play with rocketships. Then maybe they can come back and start something fresh.

The big list of license games.

==Source Engine==
-Valve Produced
Day of Defeat: Source
Counterstrike: Source
Team Fortress 2

-Third Party
Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines - First Person RPG based on White-Wolf's V:tM franchise. Made by Trokia (Now defunct), and is being supported with fan-made patches.
http://www.troikagames.com/

Unknown Arkane Studios Game - Arkane Studios, makers of the fantastic (IMO) RPG Arx Fatalis licensed the engine for their upcoming game, which could very well be Arx Fatalis 2.
http://www.arkane-studios.com/

Twilight War: After the Fall - Another RPG being made by Smiling Gator Productions, this is unique in that it's going to be a MMORPG. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.
http://www.twilightwar.com/

And, of course, Sin Episodes was announced on the Source engine recently.
http://www.sinepisodes.com

==Doom 3 Engine==
-Id Produced
Quake IV - Singleplayer FPS, based on the id Quake II IP and made for them by Raven Software.
http://quake4.ravengames.com/

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - Another game based on the Quake II IP, this time being a team-based multiplayer experiance. Currently in development by Splash Damage for id Software.
http://www.enemyterritory.com/

-Third Party
Prey - Ressurection of the old 3D Realms' portal game. Currently being developed by Human Head for 3D Realms.
http://www.prey.com/

Even if you use all three Doom 3 games vs the third party Source engine games, Source still has more licenses.

Still, this is a far cry from the days of Unreal and Quake III.

EDIT: I'll learn how to spell license one of these days.

EDIT2: Made it purdy.
