Battlefield 2 Server Released, Patches Today

The Battlefield 2 Website now offers downloads of new Windows and Linux dedicated unranked servers for Battlefield 2. Meanwhile the WOLFGaming Network Forums have details on the client patch, which is expected at 3:00 pm Eastern Time today. Word is that the netcode is a major portion of this update, and the new release will address networking issues, as outlined in a recent community update (story).

The only thing these people should be spending time on is FIXING THE WORTHLESS IN-GAME BROWSER.

The netcode in its present state is serviceable, tweak it later once you get a browser that actually works.

I bet we'll see pink and purple alternative costumes for the characters before we see a working in-game browser.

Simple incompetence on DICE's part.

I was thinking about it.
I didn't have any trouble binding any of the keys I needed.
Albeit slow to remove other "keys already bound" messages.....was I the only one smart enough to bind LMB and RMB to the SECONDARY slot so that it wouldn't disappear when you tried to bind something else? It seems like a lot of people felt it 100% necessary to bind it to the primary.....yet the secondary works the same way. I have never used 2 key functions for the same thing anyway......whats the point? There are workarounds for the minor things they fixed, seems like they should have spent their time on other things.

I hate getting killed only to be revived and immediately killed again before I can do anything.

Occassionaly, friendly players have their names appear in red, then it's easy to TK accidently.

Egads, yes. I killed about 5 people once because of this. I had just taken a highly contended flag and wound up killing several teammates when they spawned with the wrong color names. It's only happened once so far (I think).

This is a known and documented bug when someone gets slammed (auto switched) to the other team. Will usually stay until the next round.

Post 45: I also notice that if you pick a different point to spawn in, the revive won't work. You just have to be patient to see if someone tries to revive you, if not, then bring up the map and choose a spawn point.

Post 47: yeah, I need to find a way to NOT get revived. It seems they are all too happy to run into the fire to revive for no reason, and then get pummed full of FMJ themselves.

The problem with "missed" revive for medics....if the person that just died opens up their map window, you can't be revived until you close that window, i noticed this after i died and a medic tried to revived me when i had the map window opened.

Just a few things I have noticed in 26 hours of gameplay since Friday evening.

Agree with a lot of that, especially the bunny hopping and the need for better anti-air. I thought air was overpowered in BF1942, but that was nothing compared to BF2 -- at least in '42 I could take them down reasonably well with AA or a tank turret-gun. In BF2 the AA missiles pretty much suck and the turret guns don't incline high enough to be effective. The mobile AA is ok (stupidly far better than the stationary AA!), but too rare.

Basically a good pilot in BF2 is unkillable, which is simply wrong. Yes, they're very rare, but it's stupidly unbalancing.

From Overon's post:

Occassionaly, friendly players have their names appear in red, then it's easy to TK accidently.

Egads, yes. I killed about 5 people once because of this. I had just taken a highly contended flag and wound up killing several teammates when they spawned with the wrong color names. It's only happened once so far (I think).

Vechicles need to stop tking at the slightest touch.

Which goes along with your die-ing upon exiting bit. I've managed to run over MYSELF at least twice now. It's rather embarassing, and downright bad when you're the squad leader who's exiting at an enemy flag.

And I've had problems w/ revive as well. It's got to be a bug -- sometimes I simply have to revive twice. Once I tried about 4 times on one guy and it never worked.

Half the damn players already play as Spec ops... and they need more points? If anything they need nerfed. Max them out with one or two C4 packs would be a good solution.

One or two packs???? WTF are you talking about?

As it stands now, they are PERFECTLY outfitted to carry out their role, which is to sneak into the enemy base and blow their crap up.. MAYBE take out an apc/tank with one pack while they're at it.

I wasn't aware that SpecOps weren't being rewarded for doing their job currently, but you can be certain that it's unintended and that they will be eventually; destroying key assets is no less important in this version of BF than it ever has been (quite the opposite, in fact)..

You haven't played against a good Commander.

There are good Commanders out there??? Man, lucky you!

You haven't played against a good Commander. Those arty strikes are murder sometimes. The really cagey ones start calling arty as soon as one of their flags go gray

Actually, a -good- commander doesn't wait until a flag goes grey. They'll use it as soon as they find out an enemy is closing on a flag and no defenders are in close proximity.

This is a great site. I contributed the EAX driver page, gleened from other sources. Getting the Audigy drives to work on your SB Live! cards really does work.

Thanks for calling me a idiot n00b smacktard. Though I will point at their chest from now on to see if i get more consistent results. Stay tuned.

First off...

I'd like to thank everyone here for their contributions to all of the BF2 articles because it has been (for the most part) an endless source of information on this game.

I've been playing it alot since it came out and have had a good time doing so. I have figured out some things that may be helpful...[I've been playing on Ranked servers exclusively]

- I've noticed all of the 'Art of War' servers (regardless of ping or amount of players) play horribly. No offense to anyone who has anything to do with them, but this is what I've found.

- I've found that the best way to work with the server browser is to hit refresh and let it sit for a bit. I guess it takes a long time to do what it has to. I hope they add the ability to refresh a single server because it seems a bit ridiculous that something that has been common in games for years could be so messed up.

- 24 slots and lower servers seem to run the best for me. Anything above that and it eventually goes into a slideshow. It gets worse when flying or driving...but is bad all around.

- I read somewhere (one of the posts from the thread listed above - Wolf gaming network) that this patch mainly addresses server issues and the netcode. According to someone there, the netcode that shipped with the retail game PREDATED the demo netcode. Odd...but at least they are working on it.

I like the RANKED server aspect of the game. I don't have the time or desire to attempt to reach the high scores some people have, but the unlockables and rewards are a cool addition.

Someone here mentioned that the ranking system isn't good at sorting out the best people from the people who just play it alot. I agree....however, Dice and EA want people to play their game - so rewarding people who play it more often makes sense...from a business standpoint.

Thankfully you can almost always hear the artillery being fired. If you're capping you can bet they're coming for you. Once the flag goes gray move out of the zone until the artillery has finished. Then move back in and finish the cap. Pretty simple.

7. According to my stats, I "miss" a revive 44% of the time. What's up with that? The guy is dead, I go prone im right on top of him and he doesn't revive the first time I shock him with paddles.

The game is about capturing and holding flags. The Commander and his tools should simply be seen as another player in the game, usually one with a worse score than everyone else by the way. If the Commander role was stronger then I'd agree with you.

Use FILTERS much? please drive thru

I used the not-full filters and it still gave me full servers in my server-list.

No matter, though. Just a minor inconvience. I just wish they'd pull fucking safedisc out of the program. Every time I run the game, I have to remember to reboot my computer or if I try to burn a CD with nero i get an unpleasant suprise when i get to my car because the CD is completely fubared during the burn process, even though nero thinks it burnt fine

Thats total bullshit. Blowing up artillery and other structures are very important to the strategy of winning the game. There should be points for that!
