Ritual Countdown, Testing Program, Sin II Tease?

The Ritual Entertainment Website now offers a redirect to this teaser page that seems to be a countdown of some sort, as the page currently sports a ginormous 18. Proceeding through to the main page reveals that the tribe is also launching a playtester program open to those 18 years or older in the Dallas, TX area willing to come in and contribute opinions about their works-in-progress. Finally, on another possibly related note, both http://www.ritual.com/sin2/ and http://www.sin2.com/ now redirect to LegionPharma, a site that looks like a legit drug company, though researching that trademark suggests this is fictitious, so this could be some sort of viral marketing for a still-unannounced Sin sequel. With all due respect, Fantaz, the details of how the bugs got in there do not concern me. The fact of the matter is we were charged 40 dollars for a broken product. That first patch did not address the majority of the bugs and glitches, btw. What about all of the people who did not have internet access at the time? (I was one of them).

Prez, Creston... Have you been not reading these comments?! A showstopper bug can be included in a release candidate if neglected. Since there was a patch to fix the bug recently afterwards and it was no problem.

Agreed. SIN was the poster child for buggy releases. It was then and still is inexcusable for developers to gold master a product in that condition and for a publisher to ship and charge money for it.

Let's get one thing clear: Ritual worked their heart out to make SiN a great, bug-free game.

Activision, as a public company with shareholders to answer to, needed to meet their quarter. They controlled the purse strings, and both QA time and time for us to polish lost out to making their quarter.

Business as usual. The SiN developers weren't to blame, they didn't have a choice. The Activision & Ritual QA teams weren't to blame, they didn't have a chance. If you'd like to lay the blame somewhere, lay it where it belongs: fickle investors and scared execs.


Yes yes, noone is ever to blame. It's always someone else's fault. As long as the game industry keeps chanting that mantra, we're never going to get rid of shitty releases. Hey, a game will ship with bugs, I understand that. Sin shipped with a bug that made it impossible to FINISH LEVEL THREE. How exactly is that the shareholders' fault? Did Q&A / playtesting ever PLAY level 3?

The game also took 887 hours to load a level. Why? Because some sort of flushcache command had not been activated on the Gold Master. Did anyone ever LOAD a fucking level on that build before deciding to make it gold?

The answer, obviously, is NO, since otherwise it would have been fixed.

Shareholders' fault my ass. There simply was NO TESTING DONE. Now, you can blame that on the publisher, on the lack of money, whatever, but these two issues I mentioned above quite plainly show that simply NO testing was done on the Gold build whatsoever. It was simply assumed to be working, and got shipped out the door.

In the end, the customer got shitted on. Again. And all the developers / publishers do is stand there pointing fingers at each other. AGAIN.

If a developer doesn't meet a deadline, or if they do meet that deadline, and the game is totally buggy, it means they were lazy about what they were doing. A development time is set during negotiations between publisher and developer as to how long they'll have to complete a game. Though this could change, and as a developer, they need to step up their work a bit to meet that goal. The goals aren't impossible, but they are with lazy developers who don't care much about the project to begin with. Some developers as well don't really care much about a game they're working on as in if they're in financial trouble, they'll just use that publisher to pay the bills for the time being while they're out negotiating another project more suitable to their liking.

I am not a developer. I don't know how to program or write code. But I do know what a deadline is, and how missing it can often screw a business out of a lot of money. I'm a little tired of developers always blaming their publishers for shipping a game on a date that both parties contractually agreed to . I'm not positive that the "SIN" dev team missed the agreed upon date, or if the pub pulled a fast one, so if anyone knows I would appreciate the info. But developers in general need to realize that they have to set attainable goals and reach them with some measure of dependability. Games are big business. Maybe it's time that developers realized that pubs don't have an infinite amount of time and money available, and that deadlines are set for a reason.

Having said that, I am also discouraged by the blatant disregard for the developers that the publishers have been showing lately. If they run all of the talent out of the industry, whose going to be left to make games?

Um..No. That's like blaming someone for failing to do something because they didn't have all the necessary resources at their control.

When that happens, you simply devote more people to the project to meet the new deadline even if you have to pay more to get the additional help.

And where does this more money come from if the publisher controls the purse strings and won't alot the funds? I obviously don't work within the game industry, but I was under the impression most development companies don't self fund their projects.
