Wow! 2M Playing WoW!

World of Warcraft Achieves New Milestone with Two Million Paying Subscribers is the press release announcing a new subscription threshold achieved by Blizzard's MMORPG, with further breakthroughs expected when the game launches in China:
World of Warcraft recently surpassed the two million mark for paying subscribers. Already the largest MMO in both North America and Europe, Blizzard expects to see even greater growth with the recent commercial launch in China on June 7, 2005. Anticipation for World of Warcraft was already at an all-time high in China, with peak concurrency during the open beta test topping 500,000 players, nearly equal to World of Warcraft's peak concurrency in all three current markets combined. Blizzard expects to see the new mark of two million subscribers shattered quickly with the arrival of players from China in the coming weeks.

$15 a month X 2,000,000 = $30,000,000 a month = $360,000,000 a year.

Why do you think blizzard.com and worldofwarcraft.com are both heavily advertising job openings? They have money to "burn"!

Hands down WOW is one of the best well-rounded games ever. What's not the like?

- Questing system removes the XP grind
- Grouping is encouraged and often done by many players
- A rich history for all races
- A fun environment to play in for all races
- eight playable races
- A class system that actually works (albeit some class tweaks are needed for PVP)
- Lots of high-end content
- Epic and CTF Battlegrounds for PVP'ers
- Loot!

...with more on the way!

I've played Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Asheron's Call 1 & 2, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, Magic: The Gathering online, Star Wars: Galaxies and more and of all these World of Warcraft has been probably one of the best experiences thus far.

Warcraft has a RICH history and story. It's been in progress for 10 years. If they could just pause, step back, and concentrate on monthly story content that progresses the story forward, then we'd be in complete MMORPG bliss. I'm hoping for something similiar to the monthly story content Asheron's Call has.

WoW is an awesome game! Been playing over a year(including beta time), and see now reason to stop. Once your in a guild, it's endless fun. Blizzard deserves all the money and I pray they can cook up an amazing expansion pack just as The Frozen Throne was for Wc3. Long Live Blizzard!

Ok, first of all, your name is FloorPie and you need to learn what a gaming forum is, this is not a gaming forum. This is comments posting to a news article, not a gaming forum. A gaming forum is where you can post your own threads along with other geeks, such as some community WoW game forums. Here we only post comments to news articles on a site that revolves around PC entertainment industry and that not only includes games but also hardware.

Now, I think you should go and level up before your friends level up ahead of you! rofl

I believe that the payment methods in China/Korea are different. The Koreans atleast have a very good high speed net infastructure built already, and alot of people there play the online games in cyber cafes. I think thats how lineage got so huge, with over 1 million people playing it...

I have no interest in WoW. Or any interest in any of those games where you pay to play. Cause every game gets boring to me eventually and then I just feel I got ripped off.

Blizzard still cannot manage to hire a technical support or customer service department. I love the finger pointing between departments and then the inevitable "No, we will not do anything."

For that much money (which is higher than it really is, but even at $10 a month, that is a lot,) you would think the class CSRs could post more than once every three months.
Game is ok, butt he company sucks.

I was really tempted to get in to WoW - the ethos was very interesting and while playing Warcraft 3, I had always imagined how much fun it would to get on to the "troop" ground level, instead of the "general" overhead level to see what the game played like.

But the monthly $15 fee and the many problems at launch scared me away. Fortunately school intervened and kept me busy, and HL2 soon made me forget WoW. When I got tired of HL2 DM, I started looking at WoW again, but did not want to make the jump since I was now behind the hardcore players in a way, and the $15 still discouraged.

Fortunately for me, Guild Wars was released just in time

Tax Man at 40 Pecent at all ends of the money movement leaves them 360,000,000 * 0.60 = 216000000.

Don't confuse revenue with profits. There are development and marketing costs, server and bandwith costs. I am sure Blizzard spent a ton of money during the game's long gestation. And you have to pay your employees.

Sure Blizzard is making money, but how much money cannot determined simply by multiplying the monthly fee with the 2 million subscribers. And as someone else mentioned, it is not clear whether the 2 million refers to the total subscribers, or total average monthly subscribers - BIG difference there.

I agree with some of the comments.
Although I would love to waste away my life doing nothing but being a lvl 50 leet mounted warrior - I have a life.

It is amazing people pay 15.00 a month for online play.
I quit after about 4 months of City of Heroes and I don't see myself going back to MMORPGs.

50.00 for game plus 15 x months played?
Not enough depth there.
Give the game away for free, I would probably play for 3 months.

/edit: They have a while to catch up to XM Subscribers - which can be enjoyed 24 hours a day at a smaller rate. Which I would gladly pay more for, I mean come on, they put satellites into space so we could have music everywhere in North America (and some areas of South).

For 15.00 a month, I want online WIRELESS gaming in all of North America. (sorry, kind of squirrely today)

I jsut didn't think there was much depth

We're all entitled to our opinions. In mine you couldn't be farther from the truth. It seems there is so much to do and see and explore. Each area has its own stories and unique feeling to it. There's so much to do that an average gamer (10-15 hours a week) will take over 10 months to see all of it and they keep adding more. I still haven't hit 60 (46 and 32 actually) but can't remember a game since UT that I played for over 6 months and I'm still enjoying this one. Every time I log on I have a choice of areas to go and places to see and quests to complete. The economics in the game are also very intriguing and has so much depth if you are into that sort of thing. Looking forward to trying Battlegrounds soon too as I've still not had the chance to get over to that area.

If that is two million current subscribers, or just a total (ie, including accounts that have already been cancelled).

Even so, it's an enormous number, and it's just plain sad that with all that money coming in, Blizzard apparently still has shitty servers. (from hearsay, btw, I don't play it.)
